I will turn 69 in another few weeks, and I share your emotions about this fantastic song, Tony. Roy Clark had a great and unique voice and he was without a doubt one of the absolutely best guitar pickers to ever grace the C&W music industry. Two of my other favorites that Roy Clark did was the song 'Right or Left at Oak Street; and 'The Tips of My Fingers'. And, then 'Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone' which I am sure is a favorite for all guys who married the wrong woman.

Thanks for posting, Wilson (Who btw is my idol since I was 5... BW). So this was one of my grandfather’s favorite songs, and he used to play it on KZbin for me, and make me listen to the words which he told me would become more and more understandable as the years of my life went by and aged, and boy as usual, he was right! This man was always trying to teach me valuable life lessons, and then still trying to teach me even when I wasn’t realizing he was, and now, every time I hear this besides crying tears from missing him, I reflect on his wisdom and the wisdom of Roy Clark’s beautiful masterpiece!!! My two favorite lines in the song are “I used my magic age as if it were a wand & never saw the waste and emptiness beyond” and “The friends I made all seemed some how to drift away, and only I am left on stage to end the play,” like wow, so incredibly true, because when we were young we think we’re invincible, and we can do anything, and so many “friends“ never stick around they leave so easily, and forget you and your left wondering what the hell…….. My grandfather passed away in 2020 of cancer that he beat and fought for over 17 years and I love and miss that man more than life itself! R.I.P. Grandpa 😢❤😘

Im only 35 but as if i lived that life in sixties,,i feel the intense nostalgia..i think i can connect with the time and this song truely makes you feel emotional... how we came from those lovely musics to this shallow today...shame on media politicians who always bring something new to sell and inflict all generations with a dictated taste of new music.. see we need to go back to sixties and even fifties... those where times that real music was made

One of the most beautiful songs ever written and of course immortalized for us Americans by Roy Clark in 1969. I've always loved that song. Roy sang that at Mickey Mantle's funeral per Mickey's request.

I just woke up from a dream with this song playing in my mind. I was in the house where my wife & I raised out two daughters. She was in our older daughter's bedroom, who was about eight at the time. This song came on, & my wife came out of the room. She even looked as she did back then. We simply came together & began to sway to this song, as it was our favorite song while we were courting. We just smiled & enjoyed the experience. Upon waking, I had to hear this song while the experience was still fresh. From all the wonderful comments, I see that she & I weren't the only ones touched by this beautiful composition. My companion, who she got for me four years before passing, lays at my feet as I type this.

This one hurts when the shadows have grown long, and the cold night wind starts to creak in the branches. Like Johnny Cash and the song Hurt, we are always our own villain at the final curtain call. But then, even that passes, as tomorrow's peace, be it Oblivion or Paradise, prepares you for the trip back to the womb.

THESE WORDS CUT ME LIKE A KNIFE Yesterday, When I Was Young Song by Roy Clark It seems the love I've known has always been The most destructive kind I guess that's why now I feel so old Before my time Yesterday when I was young The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue I teased at life as if it were a foolish game The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned I always built to last on weak and shifting sand I lived by night and shunned the naked light of the day And only now I see how the years ran away Yesterday when I was young So many happy songs were waiting to be sung So many wild pleasures lay in store for me And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out I never stopped to think what life was all about And every conversation I can now recall Concerned itself with me and nothing else at all Yesterday the moon was blue And every crazy day brought something new to do I used my magic age as if it were a wand And never saw the waste and the emptiness beyond The game of love I played with arrogance and pride And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away And only I am left on stage to end the play There are so many songs in me that won't be sung I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue The time has come for me to pay For yesterday when I was young

I used to t think that youth was wasted on the young, but now I see that we become jaded as the years go by. Like old dogs, we get less and less excited about life, and more filled with sadness as our regrets pile up. If we were given youth at an advanced age, I doubt most people would take advantage of it.

rgb3008in I'm sorry for your loss. Someone once told me that a famous verse in the Bible about making it to the finish line wasn't really about the struggle to spread the Gospel, but just the struggle to make it through this life. I'm not sure if that is true, but I wouldn't doubt it.

THIS IS DEFINITELY A MAN'S SONG.THE INIMITABLE WAY ROY SANG IT MAKES ITS PASSION IMPOSSIBLE TO DUPLICATE BY ANY OTHER ARTIST. THIS IS ROY WHEN HE WAS STILL YOUNG & VIBRANT. HE MADE ANOTHER, LATER RECORDING THAT PALES BY COMPARISON. THERE ISN'T A WEAK VERSE IN THE ENTIRE SONG. THE LYRICS ARE MOVING & UNBELIEVABLY ACCURATE. IT'S HARD FOR A MAN TO LISTEN TO ROY SING THIS SONG WITHOUT TEARING UP OR SOBBING OVER HIS LAMENTABLE PAST. I'VE LISTENED TO THIS VERSION OF THE SONG AT LEAST A THOUSAND TIMES SINCE I FIRST HEARD ROY SING IT CIRCA 1970, AND EACH TIME I HEAR IT, IT'S AS THOUGH I'M HEARING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME.THANK YOU, ROY.

I remember Mickey Mantle commenting on this song in the 70's, after he'd retired, saying how he didn't think any man around the age of 50 could hear this song and not be affected. I was in my teens then, and now understand what Mick was really saying.

@rudyardkipling71818 жыл бұрын
Not really, the music was Charles Aznavour's "Hier Encore" and the English lyrics were written by Herbert Kretzmer which, whilst maintaining the "sense" of the original French lyrics, were substantially different. However that is splitting hairs, for all intents and purposes the song was, indeed, Charles Aznavour's. Subsequently pinched by Ahmet Kaya and Adele.
