Wilt was an actual friend of mine in the 80s and 90s.. I befriended me back in 1971 when I was 8.. .. and my Dad took me to every home Laker game in 1972 when they won the Championship and won 33 games in a row... As an adult I bought a place in Brentwood near Wilt and he would pull up outside and I would jump in and we went to Barrington tennis courts and play ( I was a former ranked junior player) He would have been an amazing tennis player if he had practiced more.. I cried when I called his house and a woman friend of his answered and and told me he was dead at the house. I was often there to watch movies and I went with him to pick out new couches and we used my truck to take his old one to my condo- He helped me move it upstairs. He was only 62 .. It fucking sucked. Super fun and chill guy ..

It makes no sense how gifted and athletic Wilt Chamberlain was. And he was not even in his prime at this point of his career. This guy was blessed with so much ability that even with the incredible numbers and accomplishments he achieved, people still didn't think he did enough. The man was a 2 time NBA champion and finals MVP, 4 time NBA MVP and people still thought that he should have done more. There's no doubt in my mind that Wilt would have been great in ANY era.

What you can observe here is that nobody on the floor can outright block Chamberlain's shot when he's anywhere close to the basket and about to make a move. If he jumps with intent, he's getting a dunk/layup, or a foul at worst. You can see how such a specimen, in those days, would get 55 rebounds in one game or score 100.

This was before the NBA counted blocked shots, but the 76'ers did count it for their own records. During Wilt's time with that organization, he AVERAGED 8.8 blocks per game. If you really know your stuff and can spot it, you only need to watch how Wilt goes about doing little things -like rebounding-to get a glimpse of how utterly unbelievable he was. @nicholasschroeder3678
@nicholasschroeder3678 2 жыл бұрын
@@Thats_Unfortunate Seems a problem for big men. Russell was also terrible from the line, and Shaq was worse. I'll make two guesses. As centers, especially back then, outside shooting just wasn't their thing, and they didn't practice it much. They played inside and that was it. A free throw is kind of like an easier version. Of course you'll argue that Wilt had a deadly fall-away. And the thing is it was a fall away, not a straight up jumper--it softened the shot since he's taken off some momentum. So my better guess is that their big hands and musculature make it harder for them somehow because the ball is basically too small and light and doesn't give them enough resistance. It makes it unstable: imagine yourself shooting a softball from the line. Think that makes sense?
@waynzignordics

@@nicholasschroeder3678 Wilt used to dunk his free throws until they banned it form the sport. Imagine how much more dominant he'd have been if opponents couldn't simply foul him and send him to the line. He'd have been the first ever 100% free throw shooter.

Wilt in his second to last season had 7 blocks in this game, Clyde had at least 4 steals. But since they didn't keep records none of it counts. Imagine how many blocks Wilt really had in his whole career

It is estimated that in their respective careers, Wilt averaged 8 blocks per game and Russell between 6 and 6.5 per game. While Wilt played in Philly, the stats guys kept careful count of his blocks for 112 consecutive games, where he averaged 8.8 blocks per game. Watching him as a Laker, I saw him block in double digits many times.

Yeah. Wilt was a real mental case when it came to free throws. His words, not mine. The idea in his Lakers days was the he's too strong to shoot free throws properly from 15 ft. So he figured if you backed up another foot or two it would make the shot easier. LOL

Actually the 1971-72 NBA finals was a bit anti-climatic. The Lakers had an incredible regular season, winning 33 consecutive games and 69 of 82 games. The Knicks were 48-34 that year, with Willis Reed missing most of the season and the Knicks going with the undersized 6-8 Jerry Lucas at center. That worked fine when Lucas was matched up again the 6-6 Wes Unseld and the 6-8 Dave Cowens in the Eastern Division playoffs, but Lucas was no match for the 7-2 Wilt Chamberlain.

The thing I always notice most about watching basketball from the 60's, and 70's is the constant movement, and no flashy business. These guys were going to work, and executed fundamentals of team basketball. All of that flashy crap looks nice, and it gets the crowd excited, but the team game has suffered over the years, especially through the 2010's, and 2020's so far. No matter what sport you watch from the 50's, 60's, and 70's, the team aspect of the sport was much greater, and the sophistication of the game was deeper. These guys were playing chess, not checkers. It's all about getting more high percentage shots than the other team, not some bullcrap analytics that some dude (who never played any sports in his life) came up with based on the value of mid-range shots vs 3-pointers. Analytics doesn't take into consideration the opponents defense, the fact that even the best shooters have cold streaks shooting the basketball, and what a high percentage shot looks like for different players who are more comfortable shooting from specific spots on the court more than others.

Dunno why people downgrade players from back then. It not that theyre SUPER ancient that they dont know what theyre doing or have less IQ ingame, they just lack the full potential of their athleticism, which wilt has and is ahead of his time. Their playstyles are just different from today. They were more on the fundamentals and look, even as hilarious as their forms were, theyre still great shooters even from deep 2 point range thats actually 3s from today

Another factor is that young players learn from the stars of their teenage years. Just consider the generation of 1980s stars who had the benefit of watching the likes of Earl Monroe, Pete Maravich, the Harlem Globetrotters, Dr J, Kareem, Bill Walton, David Thompson, or George Gervin. Then think about how young players today have grown up watching or being influenced by MJ, AI, Kobe , Steph or even Luka Doncic. I promise you the earlier generations of stars would have played differently with the same exposure to those of earlier generations and they'd be just as great today.
