Thanks everyone. I finally decided to go to the hospital today 19th October as the pain wasn't getting any less. The Doctor had a good listen to my chest and is certain my vital organs are fine and decided to treat me with pain killing medications. He didn't think an x-ray was necessary as rib fractures generally are left to mend on their own. As far as he was concerned the main thing was to get me deep breathing again (something that I haven't been able to do due to pain). The pain killers are working a like a charm and it won't be long before I'm back to normal. He did say best not to cycle for the time being just incase I should fall off and injure myself further, but the action of cycling would help with the deep breathing that I need to do. He said generally injuries like this can take upto 6 weeks to heal. So it's just a matter of time before I heal up. I shall not be riding my bike on slippery chalk again!

Sandy, a great vlog. I’d suggest you wear cycling gloves too. The fingerless ones are best, they don’t cost much and are an underrated as a safety accessory. Think of the pain and time to mend skinned palms take. Ouch. Des

Wishing you a very speedy recovery. I tipped my motorcycle over while navigating a muddy section and landed with my chest on top of my on-edge mirror. The mirror shattered from the impact. So I can relate to your injury and sympathize with you.

I'm going to the hospital today Lonnie, should have gone a few days ago. I don't think there is much they can do but had a lot of pain last night, can hardly move, I think the bruising is starting and probably all part of the healing process

@@WiltshireMan I did the Great Western Way (NCR 4) from Bristol to Reading with an overnight campsite near Pewsey. So basically on or shadowing the Kennet and Avon. Such a tranquil route, bar the major towns of course. My friend who I met at the Campsite was based there for 4 days in his van doing day rides following 'lost lanes' routes. He came down the Greenway into Avebury on Saturday and said it was pretty treacherous, where you fell obviously. I already have a Redshift Suspension stem and this months pay cheque purchase is their seatpost. I ummed and ahhhed between that and the Cane Creek but think I'll go with the Redshift as it seems to have more longevity according to the reviews. Both seem to be very good at their job but choosing between is really Elastomer vs Spring ultimately.
@WiltshireMan

@@alanhanley9515 Redshift are quite expensive but probably last a long time, I've been looking at XLC they are midway in the price but I think very worthwhile. The NCR$ sounds interesting for sure

I know how painful broken ribs can be. I spent 20 years in the military with only an injured knee. In the 30 years since then I have broken six ribs and torn shoulder sinews in my adventures. The treatment ordered by the doctor was ibuprofen and let it them heal. They are going to hurt for a while, don't press your luck, let them heal. I love the bicycle and camping videos, keep on keeping on as long as you can, it heartens me to see you overcoming the things that life throws your way.

So sorry about the bicycle crash Sandy. I know that you will mend just fine and get right back out there soon. But to an active and determined fellow like yourself, each minute of downtime will seem like hours and each day will seem like a week. Just rest my friend and let your body get on with repairing and wait till it has finished its job. You certainly made things very worthwhile on that adventure with all of the fantastic footage that your cameras captured out there. You are absolutely correct when you stated how fortunate you were to be surrounded with all of that history and beauty so nearby to where you live. It is surely stunning. Thank you so much for allowing us to join you. Take care and I will see you on the next one.

Sorry to see that you took a tumble, hope you recover soon. Trouble is the older one gets the longer it takes to mend. I fell off a ladder 6 weeks ago and broke my heel bone, still can't walk properly without a stick. My wife's reaction was " what the hell were you doing up that ladder at 79 years old! I think it may be time to stay away from heights.🙂 Good to see the drone back in action. We've had no frost here in South Wales yet but it is getting cooler.

That was a bugger falling off on the chalk. I've found wet chalk to be the slipperiest surface of all. I agree about Lycra, normal clothing does me and the only cycling thing is a helmet. I know some don't like them but it's a personal choice. England sure is a beautiful place. The one problem is the number of people at landmarks and well known places. Plenty of lesser known sites if you're prepared to walk or cycle. I'm very interested in the saddle. I find it hard to get a comfortable one but you've no idea if it's right until you've bought it and rode on it. Maybe someone should set up a saddle library where for a small fee you could try different ones.🤔 Thanks for the video and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Well first and formost, I really hope you are ok Sandy. rib injury's can be hard. I think we've all been there. I know I have. walked into a blind Gopher hole few years back went down like a rock and cracked two ribs. so I feel your pain. get well soon. And you had my mouth watering on those apples Hard to tell the variety now days there are so many variaty's of them. well over 20 I think. Speaking of that we're in a shortage of them here in Western New England we had an early frost back in the spring and it killed all the Apple Blossums so no apples to speak of most of the Orchards around here were hit hard. again get well Sandy and thanks for sharing. Nice to see you have the DJI Mini 2 drone, I also have that drone I really like it, your right about the cost its unreasonable. Here in Canada my Mini with an SD card and taxes it was $700 a year ago.

Ouch! That chalk descent is like ice when wet / frosty Sandy, I've almost come a cropper a few times on there. That said, I did bust a couple of ribs when I came off in the Savernake a few months ago. Take it easy & don't rush it, it was 6 weeks or so before I felt back to 100%. Pity I wasn't out & about myself yesterday as I could've given you a lift home in my van. All the best, Gavin.

I wish you well Sandy@@WiltshireMan & thanks for the tips about the apples. I've ridden along the old railway line countless times & not thought much about the apple trees until this morning when I rode along. Tried a couple & one of them was one of the most delicious apples I've ever tasted. If I can give you a few tips about broken ribs in return - naproxen is useful as an anti-inflammatory / painkiller but speak to your doctor, give your ribs some support with a cushion of pillow when sleeping and also your hand when sneezing and coughing. Hope that helps & all the best 👍

Hey Sandy - hope the body isn’t feeling too shook at this stage! It’ll take time no doubt..Wonderful to see those apple trees to provide some sustenance and great that you’ve a drone to fly again 🤩 We certainly are moving into winter - a shock to the system at the weekend for me when out walking! The winter bag will be out now soon..heal well!

Thanks Miriam, I felt the force of the impact but no pain at first. When I got up I could feel strange movement and hear cracking in my rib cage but continued on. The pain started to set in on the way home and got worse as time went by, also my body went cold so that could have been shock? But anyway as I sit here typing this I am virtually pain free, it only hurts when I move or breath deeply. Just have to rest up for a few weeks.....I can't see me doing that, I'll have to do something otherwise I'll go mad :) I will try and plan some gentle adventures

It is unfortunate that as we get older we don't bounce like we used too when younger. Hope the injuries mend quickly. These are the risks that we all face on motorcycles and bicycles but we still enjoy the pastime. I have a Bikeroo saddle and very basic suspension seat post on my ebike. I find the combination very comfortable on 35 mile + rides. Best wishes, Mike.

Sending Get Better soon cycling vibes from Aotearoa. While you are stationery, you might like to interview Dave about his Brompton. He seems very knowledge about those amazing bikes. I’d be keen to hear all about the choices he has made regarding standard and not so standard components and anything else he would care to mention. Watching you two catch the bus to Oxford, tootle around that historic city on your Bromptons - past “your” hospital, caused me to think a Brompton would be a very appropriate addition to my stable. So I bought one. Second hand 1999 6 speed, brimming marvellous. I haven’t yet gone multi-modal except to pop the bike into the car to take Indie the dog for a run around an old airforce base a few miles away. A ride on the bus is something I look forward to - complete with mask in these Covid times. Incidentally, instead of changing the rear sprockets as you did, I changed the front chainring to 39 tooth to cope better with the local hills; such a difference. Get better soon, but don’t rush it, tempting as that may be. We will just have to wait for our next fascinating adventure around your neck of the woods. Kind regards, Simon.

Hi Simon, thanks for your good wishes. There is a lot going for the Brompton, I believe you have made a wise choice, the ability to fold the bike and travel on different transport to another area then unfold the bike and go on an adventure is not to be under estimated. The Brompton is a great touring bike and can carry all the kit you will ever need, Check out "Brompton traveller" on KZbin. Good idea to get Daves perspective on the Brompton, he has tricked his bike out very well.

@@WiltshireMan just keep taking things easy my friend. I am thnking for next year doing a tour of Wales on my motorcycle, doesnt matter how long as i am retired, just been looking at the map. I have arthritis in my knees, so have not really used my motorcycle in the five years i have had it, it has only done 100 miles, its a benelli trk502, the road version, so it will be my first long tour.
