Wimber and Power Evangelism: With Brian Blount
In this episode, Brian Blount comes on the show to discuss John Wimber and how he practiced power evangelism. Power evangelism is a form of evangelism that relies on the supernatural power and gifts of the Holy Spirit to reach new converts and work through born again Christians. JOHN WIMBER was a charismatic pastor and one of the founding leaders of the Vineyard Movement. He pastored Anaheim Vineyard Christian Fellowship, where he emphasized intimacy with God, authenticity in worship, and church planting. Wimber became a well-known speaker at international charismatic conferences, focusing on what he called "power evangelism" and healing through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Brian Blount a vineyard pastor who has been training individuals, teams, and churches in power evangelism for over twenty years. This uniquely specializes him to speak about the theology and practice of Wimbers and Power Evangelism.

Praise God!!!! I was saved in a John Wimber conference. He was the most balanced Christian of anyone I've ever heard, then and even now. He got the balance right...always the gospel and signs will follow!! Wagner was saved at the same time, at a meeting I attended, but he went too far away from the gospel portion. Wimber was so funny and witty and endearing!!!!!!! Like a wonderful Christian Santa Claus..jolly! Laughed from his belly!! I loved him and went to dozens of his gatherings! I fear that it went away into a signs and wonders only. I do not know what the Vineyards are doing now, as I have not been in an area where one is available. His movement is the closest I have seen in my 73 years of what the gospel should be!!! I pray that there will be this balance in the near future! YES, WORD and WORKS!!!!! Loved him and look forward to seeing him again!!

I went to a John Wimber conference in Sydney back in the 90s when I first became a Christian. It was life changing. Met such genuine people there. It was a great introduction a life in my new faith. I haven't gone to church for about 15 years, but it would be great to find something like that again.

I can't tell you how much I owe to the Vineyard Churches and their teaching. Our church was definitely going down a wrong path when a Vineyard team came to our city in the 1980s. The Lord worked mightily to return us to sound teaching and discipleship.

I’d feel totally confident telling a demon to leave, but I’ve only prayed and asked for healing. I’ve never seen a sick person healed, but I will keep asking every single person I see if I can pray for them. I’ve been a continuationist for only a little under two months. While I’m willing to proclaim, I also understand that my method is irrelevant to the Lord. My heartbeat is evangelism, and seeing the sick healed and the captive set free. I will say, it is tough praying for healing over and over again for people, strangers, family, Christians or nonChristians, but seeing none. I will just be faithful and keep asking and ask the Lord to sustain my child-like faith. Alright. 72 times. I’ll keep asking.

These two guys are asking excellent questions. Thank you Brian for doing this. 72 times wow. I know a lot about the healing ministry, but when I look into these things, I realise, I know nothing, and that statement goes with a great deal of the Kingdom. Knowing God, Jesus, Holy Spirit is enough. The more I know Him, the less I have to worry about knowing stuff.

Pentecostal/first wave are those who formed their own denomination after being kicked out of their churches. Second wave are those who caught it, but were no longer kicked out of their denominations, and became a movement in their own denominations. I think in particular is associated more with Roman Catholics charismatics because it's a large church/denomination, and because the Calvinist and Calvinist-like churches are more sceptical to it and so they caught it much later which is the third wave. I think the main thing about the third wave is it had a well developed reformed-like apologetic and theology of spiritual gifts. Although probably less practice of it.

Dangerous! This show is definitely known as NAR. What’s wrong with just sharing The gospel? The gospel should be enough. It’s not Jesus plus this and that. I don’t Agree with you. I didn’t hear repentance. I didn’t here people getting saved because they recognized their sinners in need of a savior. This guy all about signs, wonder and miracles.

I don't mean to be degrading in any way at all, but I'm just wondering: have you read the Gospels and Acts and noticed how often the preaching of the Gospel is accompanied with signs and wonders? They're practically inseparable. The fact that many preach the Gospel without accompanying signs does not necessarily prove that signs have ceased. It more likely, (and I would say absolutely), proves that those who preach without the accompanying signs are in lack. That's not to say they're not true Christians, nor is it to say that what they do is heresy, nor that those who experience miracles are better or something, but they have separated the preaching of the Gospel from the power of God by denying that God continues confirming the Gospel with signs and wonders. Miracles really do open people to the Gospel in ways that preaching the law, discussing, testifying, etc cannot. AND VICE-VERSA! The law can reach people that healing may not! It's not just one or the other. It's both and!

" the gospel should be enough"- clearly the gospel is " enough" but its what our understanding of the content of the gospel is that is NB. It seems that often our theology is shaped by our experience - in lieu of the reverse. And this is valid in all directions. No view without a view? If the King is returning to restore everything and for mankind to take up their real humanity...that is going to implode upon people, societies and this good creation- I expect that to be consistently surprising- my frame of reference is impoverished until God's power and truth overlay& replace it n'est pas?
@phillipsugwas

JW was unquestionably the worst dressed Christian leader yet seen on any " platform". Very unlike those who today have their own platforms etc etc. I digress. To describe Wimber as the " signs and wonders guy " seems to really miss the " main and the plain". Vineyard ( and of course others is really all about enacted inaugurated eschatology , viz the Kingdom now and " not yet".... The Vineyard and its quest for " the radical middle " always brought something " to the party." Mistakes, yes. But lots of good stuff- thank goodness for those Quaker roots amongst other things worth remembering= applying...I better listen to the talk now😊

Take your logic to the logical conclusion. Go to the hospital, go to the children’s ward, walk up and down the hallway healing as you go. You guys are making God a puppet. Yes God is giving spiritual gifts to the church. Yes God can work miracles today. But they’re not normative. Otherwise they wouldn’t be miracles.
