Just watched this match in its entirety for the first time. I remember it at the time and it seemed more straightforward back then but I agree, this was a real test of her adaptability, fortitude and concentration on the biggest stage of all.

I remember Chris evert saying in the first set that it was the best first set of grass court tennis that she’s ever seen from someone (Jana). She really was nailing those volleys. Hingis didn’t seem to have as much fight a year later when they met in the semis again…

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Seles only had one major at 16 and was not number 1 until 17. Hingis had 3 majors at 16 & was number 1. So yeah, you take a seat. No one was better at 16 than Hingis
