The 1997 had the most shock results for some time. Gustavo Kuerten coming out of absolutely nowhere to win, and very few people expecting Majoli to get anywhere near the title. Perhaps for Martina Hingis this match was the classic case of an emotional let down after a big match. Very possible that she had viewed the Seles semi final as the big match, and had a hard time getting up for this one.

I also think Martina was completely worn out by the time she was in the singles final. She played a long semi-final against Seles, then had to play an even longer doubles semi-final, then the final. Had she maybe withdrawn from the doubles match, she may have had enough energy to win in the singles' final.

Hingis made the mistake TWICE of being overly-confident in the French Open final. What an amazing match from Majoli.
