Manuel Rodrigues Coelho (ca. 1555 -- 1635) Portugese organist en componist. De stijl van componeren zit een beetje tussen Renaissance en vroeg Barok, en vertoont overeenkomsten met de muziek van De Cabezón, Sweelinck en de Engelse virginalisten. Naast Tiento's heeft hij veel liturgische orgelmuziek geschreven, waaronder deze versetten over het Kyrie uit de Gregoriaanse mis. Elk verset (variatie) heeft andere motieven en imitaties, en een andere kleur door de register keuze: Eerste verset: Praestant 8 en Octaaf 4; de tweede verset met alleen de Praestant; de derde verset met Praestant 8, Quint 3, en Woudfluit 2, de vierde verset met Praestant 8, Octaaf 4 en Mixtuur; en de vijfde verset weer met de Praestant alleen. Ik heb bewust een wat rustiger tempo genomen om niet over alle prachtige harmonieën heen te spelen, maar die juist goed uit te laten komen. English: Manuel Rodrigues Coelho (ca. 1555 -- 1635) was a Portuguese organist and composer. His music style is somewhere between Renaissance and Early Baroque, and is reminiscent to De Cabezón, Sweelinck and the English virginal players. Apart from Tiento's he wrote liturgical organ music, like these versets on the Kyrie. Each verset has different motivic figures and figuration, and an other color by the use of different stops: first verset with: Praestant 8 and Octave 4; second verset with only the Praestant; the third verset with Praestant 8, Quint 3, and Woudfluit 2; Fourth verset with Praestant 8, Octave 4, and mixture; and the final verset again with the Praestant solo. In order to listen to all beautiful harmonies I on purpose played not to fast. Yeah these old organs were likely responsible for the polyphonic western music that we all use. They were the first keyboard instruments.

Thanks for this. Makes you really appreciate the equal temperament tuning of the modern organ. I like the way in which someone seems to have sawn away a section of molding above the music desk, to fit in taller books, and the novel arrangement of pushing stop heads IN to bring them ON. That's one, wrecked old heap!

This organ has much more character in its tuning than modern organs. I would appreciate these old organs a thousand times more than nowadays organ with plenty of "colors" but without characters

This particular organ has a "Forbidden Chord", so yes there are a couple notes out of tune..
