Win a book award - Here's What to Do!

Did you win a book award? Congratulations! Now, you might be wondering what you should do with that fabulous new accolade to help you sell your book, build your credibility, and land more cool marketing opportunities. Many book award companies will happily sell you all kinds of high-priced marketing packages and you might be tempted to hand over your credit card to get the word out that you're an award-winning author. You do want to get the word out but you can probably do it without the package. This is nice Julie, as my first book won an award in July - came out of nowhere - from Bookauthority, for one of the top 5 books for new CEOs. I have done most, but not all of your suggestions, and I will likely add your new ideas to my to-do list. Thanks for the timely video. I am sure you have many good ones upcoming! One thing is that Dave Chesson released an upgrade to Publisher Rocket to help with keywords, a new way to look at them. Your team might want to take a hard look if they have not already! This is such an excellent preemptive bit of advice. They do much the same thing in the art world. I wish I had someone like Julie to advise me to accept the award but forego the expensive package when I won the Unet Museum prize for my painting!

Now what if you pay for the service, but you don't win? Or if you don't hear anything back? Since for a lot of us, it can be challenging to save up enough money to try for a book reward. As the old self-publisher's saying, the odds are against you.

I wouldn't be spending money on awards if it's the only money you have. You're better off to focus on e-book sales or Amazon ADs.

@@BookLaunchers The problem is trying to get people to buy the book, even when I do a paid promotion....The book has 118 reviews with most of them being highly positive and I can still just barely get it to sell during a promotion. The problem with dragon rider Fantasy though, is there is just too much competition. I believe my other book, The Kangaroo's Messenger might do better when I'm done with my work in it, because the idea itself has no competition, and the book is the only one of its kind in Fantasy.

How do you distinguish between a ‘shonky’ award, set up just to make money and one that is truly authentic? You have recommended we look at the ‘Alli awards’ but the IP award you won is listed in their award overview to be in the Caution’ category. That is one of the “ Contests with more serious concerns. For example, these contests may involve excessive entry fees, exploitative contracts, conflicts of interest, or high-pressure sales.” Just curious and seeking guidance because I too have won awards but I have issues with how my award was determined. If the award is not credible to me, it means nothing and I will not use it to publicise my book for ethical reasons. Where do you stand?

It's such a good question and I have gone from 'all awards are scams and not worth it' to 'use with caution' after having some interesting experiences as a judge and as an author. I agree with you for the most part and it's hard to really understand what is good and not so good about the awards. What I don't like about IPPY is that they seem to be set up to sell you marketing which was the inspiration for this video. The award ceremony they do is cool and they do give you some marketing cred. They are an award that is widely known which is good. Why I have changed my mind a bit is as we have started doing more with libraries and bookstores for distribution and events for authors (As well as media and live appearance pitching) we've found that the awards have value if you are showing multiple award wins for your book.
