Someone may know you for keeping a low profile. They could attack you instead of the player with more coins. Reading people aside from what their cards are is a key element in this game too. I've been attacked with an assassin or with a coup on several occasions while keeping the low profile. And these players were less experienced than I was, which is also why they considered me a target.

Oh man... maybe. KZbin stopped monetizing these a while ago, which was a small but not totally powerless incentive for me. I'll see if I can make another one. They're fun to make. And it's a great game.

Thanks Alex--and I agree about the cards. I prefer the classic, original look of the reformation expansion cards. I played the physical copy long before I downloaded the app and started playing that way. I look forward to a match sometime.

Game well played. But I’ll say one thing: this should’ve been P4’s victory. With 11C before a coup the 4C diff would have been too much to catch up on. Had you FA’ed P4 could have blocked, which would have been a loss for you if you challenged (P3 with 3C and possible assassin).

Adding foreign aid would add an additional round of requiring everyone to approve or challenge foreign aid. It'd slow things down. Works great when you're playing in person, but when you're online, it's too slow.

Why didn't you take the contessa?

Great question! I took the Ambassador INSTEAD of the Contessa here (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpbMn2ZshqqLqasm7s ) for a few reasons. First, I was down to just one card, and there was a LOT of game left. Two other players had both cards still alive, and a third player had one card still alive. And the way to survive in a game with a lot yet to be played is to avoid making yourself a target. How do you do that? By NOT gaining coins. (Also by not trying to steal or assassinate, etc.) The only card that allows you to legitimately NOT gain money each turn is the Ambassador. Cause you can exchange every turn and not add +1 coin to your purse. Of course you can always bluff about stuff (like take the Contessa, but pretend you have the Ambassador, etc.), but I only bluff when I have to. It's nice to actually have the card you claim to have. Another reason I chose Ambassador over the Contessa has to do with a bluff I was hoping to pull off--allowing folks to steal from me, then suddenly blocking a steal and getting a kill this way. Again, at the moment I took the Ambassador, I had 5 coins. That's a pretty high number--just two away from 7, and being able to coup. So, I was assuming that folks with a captain would want to target me. In that situation if I have a Contessa, I have not choice but to allow a steal. Cause I can't legitimately block. BUT... if I have the Ambassador instead, I can lie about allowing a steal as much as I want (which lowers my coin count, and keeps me from being a target, and in fact prevents folks who have a Captain from wanting to kill me--cause I'm their money purse, so kill me last!). Then, after allowing a few steals and when the time is right for me, I can suddenly BLOCK a steal, which is likely to be challenged, and get a 'free' kill. And indeed... that's how I won the game, with a 'free' kill because I blocked, I was challenged, and I really did have the ability to block. A third, and much more minor reason I chose Ambassador over Contessa had to do with where the assassins were. I knew that one was dead--I'd turned it over for everyone to see. There were only two left. Contessas are ONLY GOOD as a card to block Assassins. Since there were only two assassins left, and since I was pretty sure that player #3 either had one or both assassins or knew one or both were in the deck (and not in play)--see here: --kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpbMn2ZshqqLqasm10s-- -- and since I didn't think player #3 would come after me with an assassination (cause there were other players with more money and cards still alive), I guess I felt pretty good about not needing a Contessa. Finally, had I needed a contessa later in the game, hey, boom, I've got an Ambassador, I can make an exchange and hope to be able to draw one. But the other way around doesn't work--if I had a contessa, and needed an ambassador (or some other card), I can't get one without bluffing (and risking death). Long answer to a great question. Does my response make sense? Am I crazy or just lucky?!! Hehehe... Thank you for asking!!

Great answer thanks. One more question, completely unrelated. I've been thinking about rules variants for the paper version of the game. How about a 'charity' action; 'give 1 coin to a player'. This should probably be tied to the contessa, and potentially blockable by the duke. What do you think?

I'm not sure I understand completely. You're saying the Contessa would be able to donate 1 coin to someone? So, if I had a Contessa, I could donate 1 coin to another player?

Well, it would certainly change things up a bit. You'd be able to 'force' someone to coup (by adding +1 coin to their collection of 9 coins, for instance). It might be fun to play test that some time.
