With a finite number of cards, 15 total, 5 unique, with 3 copies of each card, it means there are some patterns that will develop. I like the Writer. Draw a card and then pay 1 coin to draw another. Information is power in this game. You can figure a lot out this way.

I love claiming ambassador early and trying to swap into two of the same card in this game. It loses... quite a lot, but it's worth it to see the look on your friend's faces that one time you win by revealing that you weren't lying about having that second contessa!

The endgame bluffing is significantly limiting, since depending on the number of players, you are hugely limited on what you can bluff. Also, there's significantly more information about your card, considering how much information you gave out before, as well as how loose of a player you are. Passing up on blocking interactions when you have, say, the Duke or Captain or whatever, aren't often passed on, and not blocking an assassination as the Contessa is ridiculous, since as you point out, the Contessa is the worst in heads up play. Ambassador play is hard to judge the odds, since the Ambassador's odds are not only changed by which cards are still in the deck, but it also limits bluff potential by possibly ruling out certain cards in your opponent's hand. Bluffing the Ambassador first is an interesting ploy, but depending on what cards are still in the deck, may trigger your opponent to call the bluff out of desperation if they odds of you finding their counter are high enough. Ultimately, because very rarely do you end up going into the endgame with 0 coins each, the close matchups are usually determined more by starting position than direct matchup, and calculation becomes necessary.

can u explain why in 1-on-1 combat the captain wins against assassin? cause u always steal the assassin's coins?

Exactly. The assassin can take two coins from the pool, but then you steal from them, so they never get 3 coins to assassinate you.

How would the inquisitor affect the late game? I bought coup: the reformation. I'd imagine it would be very powerful.

The problem with a late game Inquisitor is if that's your only card. Taking a turn to peek at your opponent's card can be very costly, without a guaranteed result. I much prefer a Captain, duke, or assassin in the late game.

@@kristopherhayes486 I never love having the Inquisitor in heads up play. I do like pretending I have it once in awhile though. Most people won't think you're crazy enough bluff it, so they don't call you on it. The Inquisitor can be used to find out what your opponent has, and also lets you discard it if it's say, a Duke. So the Inquisitor is much better than the Ambassador in the end game.

There's an expansion to the game called Coup Reformation. You can add in different roles and change up the dynamic. I bought it, but I tend to just go with the basic roles + Inquisitor instead of Ambassador.
