Winchester SX4 VS Beretta A300 Ultima | WAS I WRONG!? | Shotgun Showdown

To be clear, my issue isn't that you can't put it on safte once the trigger is pulled and the firing pin is not reset, my issue is that the trigger doesn't always reset. Sometimes you shooting and you go to shoot a second shot and wen you pull the trigger it is like it was never reset. There is definitely something messed up with the trigger.

That sounds like the bolt is short stroking and not pushing the hammer back to reset. Not broken in/low recoil ammo/dry action maintenance procedures should do the trick.

UPDATE: After taking the trigger apart it appears that the hammer is out of spec and because of that, the trigger doesn't always reset as it should. This gun will be going back to Beretta 🙁

@@allyourbase12 No, it is not due to short stroking. I can replicate the issue by running the action by hand. The bolt comes back and resets the hammer, but because the hammer appears to be out of spec, sometimes it creates rubbing inside the trigger mechanism and the trigger doesn't click back forward. I am no expert when it comes to the internal working of triggers but I can see the crooked hammer is creating issues.

My friend it's not an issue, this is the way it works. If you pool the trigger and it's empty the safety is not moving. I had the al 391 urica gold and it worked the same way. The most Beretta shotguns have the same trigger mechanism.

I got the A300 after your initial video, and it's been flawless for several hundred shells right out of the box. Mostly light target loads but the heavy stuff shoots great aswell. Very happy so far.

I love my SX4 hybrid hunter it’s chambered up to 3 1/2 in and it’s been a dang good gun no cycle issues no problems with the gun used it deer driving, Turkey hunting and dove hunting and it works great in all conditions without fail!

I looked at the A300 Ultima and Win SX4. The shop had 2 A300 and 4 SX4. The fit and finish on all the SX4's was horrible. Like embarrassingly bad. I left with a camo A300. The trigger did not feel bad and the safety is where it should be. And both Beretta's fit and finish were perfect. You were not wrong. I wouldn't have paid $200 for those SX4's i handled today.

I have a A300 Outlander that I’ve had for 3 years. It has about 1500 rounds through it and has been flawless since day 1. Yes, if you dry fire it without resetting the firing pin, you cannot put the safety on. Once you reset the firing pin, you can put the safety on. When you fire you last round, the chamber should stay open and the safety will work.

That's how a cross bolt safety works... It blocks the hammer from moving forward when its cocked. When it's down, the hammer is locked in that notch. Also, if the hammer is down, the gun is safe. It's got nothing to do with the firing pin, and everything to do with the hammer.

After taking apart the trigger is apparent that the trigger (hammer) is out of spec and causing issues. There are a lot of folks having the same issue.

I have an SX3 I use for waterfowl and upland hunting. My cousin has an SX4 and we have never had any issues. They might not be the most fancy with all the bells and whistles, but they go boom every time.

I have the beretta a300 outlander and haven’t had an issue in 3 years and I use it as a waterfowl gun and am not easy on it. This gun has been fully submerged in saltwater. Cleaned it when I got home and never a problem and it’s been a year later. Just yesterday I shot 4 for 4 at some divers. Best shooting gun in my opinion. For the price it’s the best gun on the market.

Thanks for sharing your experience and your thoughts. Many are having issues with the Ultima. I took my trigger group apart and it appears that the hammer is out of tolerance. Not sure what they changed with triggers between the Outlander and the Ultima.

They all at one time or another get ahead of themselves trying to put out the “ Latest and Greatest “ and over look some things in the process. Look at the automotive industry, heck there’s a recall every 6 months for something or another. Remington’s A5 has been a nightmare for them as well. I run a SBE3 and have owned an A400, their both some of the finer guns and no issues with either.

I have a first run SX4. The pins are a little lose now and the charge handle has never came out but is definitely loose, despite that it is by far my favourite gun way better then my beretta I’ve put thousands of rounds and killed lots of birds with the Winchester and have never had a shell jam best gun for the money imo.

I had the same issue with my beretta and was told it was a recall on the a 300 so I shipped it back to beretta and they fixed the trigger group for free have not had any issues with it since.

I was considering the SX4, A300, Viper G2 pro, and CZ 712. After watching and reading several reviews, comparison videos, etc, I decided to get the SX4 (12GA Field). My son and I took it out for it's first day at the range and it performed great with 1oz 8 shot target loads. I was expecting some failures since almost everyone has mentioned that semi-autos have a break-in period. But we fired 100 shells (half 1180 fps and half 1250 fps) and had no ejection issues, only a few feed issues of the 2nd round, which all happened while my son was shooting, never happened to me. Maybe he loaded the second round improperly a few times, not sure. I'm very pleased with it overall. It swings comfortably and I'm sure is much more accurate than its users. (Although this was his very first time shooting a shotgun and he broke well over 60% of them off a pedal thrower which I thought was pretty impressive!)

There's nothing wrong with the A300 that's how all good guns are made. It's a matter of being smart enough to know how to use it. Most guns are made so you can't put the safety on if it's not cocked. Never had a problem with mine because i understand how good guns work .

Thanks for calling this out. Gun manufacturers need to take Quality Control very seriously. Safety is at stake. Not only that, it's not easy to return a defective firearm. The dealer can't take the gun back. And shipping a defective gun back to the manufacturer is a pain, and expensive.

In the first version of the Maxus you can put the safety on if it's not cocked, but if you force to fully open the bolt you need to apply a lot of force and you'll bend a piece inside the trigger group, and you'll have problems after that. Better not be possible to put on the safety without being cocked, than to be possible and damage the trigger mechanism when opening the bolt for the first time with the safety on and the trigger still uncocked.

Unfortunately, any new design has teething issues. However, I thought the Ultima was an updated Outlander. I’m sure they will resolve the issue in short order. Also, most designs won’t let you put the safety back on when the hammer is down so that’s not a concern at all. I love my Outlander and definitely think the claim of it being the best value SA holds true.

No doubt some issues will reveal themselves when releasing a new model, however its not an every gun problem. i've had mine a few weeks and have put hundreds of rounds From different manufactures and even the light bird loads cycle no problem. I've been extremely impressed with my a300 Ultima and for the price point would absolutely recommend.

Bought the a300 ultima. Shot 2 rounds and had a failure to eject. Cycled the weapon and the next shot fired but charging handle came out. Being a left handed shooter, it hit me on my right cheek. Had problems with 1st 15 rounds. Fired my remainder 85 rounds with no problems . Have another 125 rounds with no problems.

I purchase an A300 Ultima in August 2021. Ran several boxes of bird shot through it shooting sporting clays with no problem and I really liked the gun's performance. Took it on a hunting trip to South Dakota in October and the problems started. The trigger failed to reset the first day and I thought it was a shell recycling problem, but after cleaning it and having the gunsmith at the ranch exam it, we determined that it was a trigger problem and cleaned those parts. Next two days same problem with the trigger failing to reset causing me to miss second shots on about 5 birds. I called Beretta (took 3 days to get through and they never responded to my email) and the rep said that she would send me a new trigger assembly or I could send the gun back for repair. I opted for sending the gun back, not wanting to botch the job trying to do it myself. Hopefully I will get it back before next fall for my next hunting trip.

Yes you are wrong. The Beretta safety can not bet set if the hammer is not cocked. Hamer must be cocked. Gun is working just fine. I have to think that Winchester got mad at you after giving you all those sx-4’s.

It's pretty normal for firearms that the safety won't engage when the hammer is down. when you have a live round left in the camber, the hammer is cocked and your safety works. when you drop the hammer on an empty chamber, the safety has no use anyway since the chamber is already empty. With a lot of handguns, the safety won't engage when the hammer is down either. It's normal.

I own several shotguns ( SBE3, Winchester SX3 and SX4, A400 and a Versa Max) . The Winchester’s are wicked fast as far as a duck gun, they all are for the most part. I’d give the nod to the Winchester’s over the A300 and not feel bad about it.

Don’t buy a Beretta unless you want poor customer service and problems. Bought one from gunbroker a few weeks back, and it’s clear they have extremely poor quality control! Out of the box the rib had a large metal “booger” on it along with a small gash. The dip doesn’t look well done, there are several areas where it’s not covered. Even better, the front pin was “tightened” sideways and will not tighten in alignment. To top it off, their customer service doesn’t return emails. I haven’t shot it yet and am considering not even bothering so that I can trade it on something that isn’t a lemon. For comparison, my SXP, which I bought as a “beater” before duck season, has had zero flaws-a 250 dollar, Turkish-made pump is higher quality. First Beretta…Last Beretta.

Plus the a300 stove piped over the head shooting ..which turned me.off from it in the first video....the SX4 is an excellent gun have researched it from many other videos as well....its with the maxus. 2 Browning...3 major reasons why ..its speed ...it doesn't stove pipe over the head etc... and has better ergos...with less gimmick

I think you are very wrong in your comparison of the SX4 against the Beretta. I didn’t try the Beretta yet. But must say, all the things your SX4 can do, the SX4 that I have been able to shoot, can’t do any of the things your SX4 can do. If I shoot 24g ammo, it doesn’t repeat at all from the shoulder at all. 24g is used in international competition, so I can’t just change. So for me SX4 out of the box is crap. Maybe you use heavy load ammo or a special made SX4 by Winchester or you. But out of the box it’s useless. The Beretta A400 shoot everything you put in it, Even 21g. Next time you compare, please be more objective. I love watching your videos, but in this case I think Winchester might influenced you a little since it’s your show gun.

I have an sx4 that’s 1 week old, more times than not, the 3rd shell stays in the mag tube. Also, when it does happen to shoot all 3, the bolt may or may not lock back. Really aggravating when you spend $1000+ on a gun that may or may not operate correctly

How fast you can run the gun has nothing to do with the overall performance and function of the gun or even a good basis for discussion. All modern semi autos will work fast enough for clay or game shooting. All Beretta semiauto safeties can only be applied on when the gun is cocked. This is regardless if the bolt is open or closed but it must be cocked ( hammer back) Now IF there is an issue with trigger / hammer not resetting after being fired and gun cannot be fired then this is a malfunction and it should be sent back to Beretta. My two cents.

How fast I can shoot has a lot more to do with my observations of mount-ability, swing, recoil, and trigger than it does speed. The reason I speed shoot is to put the pressure on. When you shoot slow and easy, it is a totally different experience. I learn so much about a gun speed shooting. Many Ultima owners have had trigger issues. I fixed my issue with a new hammer. I love ❤ the look and feel of the Beretta A300 so the Ultima will be even better. However with the issues of the trigger group plaguing the new Ultima I'm sorry to say that I'm going to have to go with the tried and true Winchester sx4. Now I'm sure that Beretta will eventually work out the kinks on the A300 Ultima and the gun will be awesome. However when I buy a gun I need to know that the gun is working without issue. Not to mention the fact that the Beretta A300 line has been out for years and this gun is just another variant of the A300 and yet they still can't figure out the trigger group assembly calls into question their Quality and control. So until then the Winchester sx4 gets my vote.

You must have one of the early SX4 shotguns that had that issue. You can send it in and get a new bolt for it.

That is interesting, I hadn't noticed that with my Beretta's. That wasn't the real issue, just an observation. The real issue is that the trigger sometimes does not reset after the the gun cycles. It is like the trigger gets stuck for a while and then it will eventually click back and be reset. Frustrating! 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)

After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel kzbin.infoUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!
