Winchester SXP Black Shadow Pump Action Shotgun Review.

That rail on top of the shotgun barrel is called a vented rib. The venting is intended to prevent the thermal expansion of the barrel as well as minimizing the heat transfer from the barrel to the rib. I have the original Winchester 1200 Defender 3' Magnum version with pistol grip from factory - originally designed in 1964 but they stopped making them back in 2006 and started making the Winchester 1300 line which is what the SXP line is based of off. For me the Winchester pump action shotgun is still the smoothest slickest fastest pump shotgun ever made and I rate it over the Mossberg and Remington line of pump shotguns. I own lots of shotguns.. Remingtons.. Mossbergs.. Turkish made.. Chinese made.. Russian made.. Italian made.. but I only own ONE Winchester shotgun my whole life since the 1980's and that is my Winchester 1200 Defender.. and even though it is chambered for 2 3/4" and 3" shells it is still just a smooth cyl bore only.. and I really wish it was threaded for choke tubes. The original Winchester 1200's were made smooth bore with steel receivers but the Winchester 1300's that came out later came with aluminum receivers, vented ribs, and choke tubes. They say that Winchester tried to recreate the older model 1300 line again when they introduced this new Winchester SXP or Super X Pump action shotgun line - even calling them "the worlds fastest pump action shotguns" but for me these new models still cant compare to the old Winchester 1200's and 1300's - and I will never get rid of mine!

It’s really a great all around shotgun to be honest. The one I have is the black shadow which has the 24 inch barrel with a 3 1/2 inch chamber 12 gauge. And once you get used to it you can shoot extremely fast.
