Winching with a Hi-Lift Jack: using a Hi-Lift Jack and Winch Kit for Recovery. Fzomb50 gets winched!

In this video I use my Hi-Lift Jack to winch F-Zomb50 out of a mud hole...yes, I'm winching with a jack! I use the Hi-Lift Winch Kit to use my jack as a winch. I show the parts of the kit and how I rig them up for recovery. It can be a lot of work to get yourself out of trouble but it is effective. I did myself no favors choosing the tree that put me in a mud pit!...lol. I found it important to make it as real of a situation as possible....probably could have just buries for real...not sure my thought process on not being really stuck. Maybe just looking at it as getting stuck intentionally to demonstrate the process without making it too hard on myself. Oddly I have been really buried deep and the difficulty wasn't significantly different. Great shoulder, back and leg workout!

Outstanding video!! Hi Lift winching isn't fast, now easy, but slow and methodical, but works 100% of the time. Aside from winching, the jack can lift the slipping tire and shove stuff underneath namely with the accessory tire hooks. Thank you for getting into the frozen mud and getting stuck in the video, this is real life "getting stuck" in offroading, I've carried a jack nearly 30 years and only recently learned about winching with it, Can't wait to try this out!!

Would've been too easy to rig it up on flat ground out of the mud. Thougjt it would be good to show how it really is out on the trails...lol. This setup has gotten me out many times. I now have an electric winch which makes thing way easier but keep the Hi-Lift stuff in my gear for a reliable back up. Is quite the work out as well. Thanks for the comment and view. Well, thank you for the kind words. Glad the video is help to you. To answer your question, Yes. The Hi-Lift jack and winch kit are brought separately. The kit is available on Amazon for around $76. You can just type "hi-lift jack winch kit" in a Google search and find other vendors that sell it. You'll just need 3 things, all bought separately, to get a complete setup: a hi-lift jack, the hi-lift winch kit, 3/8" link chain (I bought mine from Harbor Freight but the chain is available at nearly any hardware store or farm supply store like Tractor Supply). It is most definitely a work out moving things but way easier than trying without it! Good luck and have fun!

I remember the instructions showing a different way of rigging it up so try both.(the way I did it and the wat in the instructions). If I rmener correctly the instructions showed hooking the jack to the vehicle and pulling towards the anchor point. I'm sure each method has it's place. Another bonus to the Hi-Lift winch kit is the workout you get when using it. No need for a gym membership!😄

Sure glad I have a winch ! I fabricated a front hitch receiver welded to the front frame. The winch is mounted on a removable mounting plate to where the winch can be relocated to the rear hitch receiver. I have a 4 gauge hot wire running from the battery, through a 50 Amp replaceable fuse, along the top of the frame to the rear hitch with a quick electrical connection. The ground wire at the rear connection is bolted to the vehicle frame. I don't look forward to having to relocate the winch from the front hitch receiver to the rear hitch receiver because I sure dont want to carry the weight. Thinking of fabricating a sort of compact sled, of sorts, putting the winch on top of the plate with rope handles to pull it around to the back if needed.

I have a very similar set up for my electric winch. I have a few videos in my library where I use it. Not sure what you run on your winch, but synthetic rope save quite a bit of weight compared to steel cable. Another way yo save weight is to run less cable on the drum. I enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting it. I got a high lift and use it for many things. Pulling up posts. Jacking up one side of my wood shed to get to the rats underneath with my dogs (blocked up so it doesn't fall on them of course) . Recovery seems like another fine use for it. Pretty simple. Could you use say a 1/2" shackle in the hole of the large runner to hook a 3/8" chain up too or do you NEED to use the piece that goes over the nose and is secured with a bolt? Same goes for the bottom chain used to hold the main chain when letting off tension? Could I use just a shackle there too? I generally want to know if you need the kit or could make it work with some mechanical knowledge and common sense?

Thanks for the view and comment. It means a lot to me. I try hard to make my videos entertaining and informative. Hi-Lifts are a versatile tool for sure. Cool you get that much use out of it. Good questions. I wouldn't run a shackle through the hole of the lifting foot. The metal there is pretty thin and not sure how much weight it could support. To me you would definitely have to have something running over the top of the lifter. I took a look at the peice that holds the lifting chain to the foot. Its made from 3/16" steel and to my surprise it has a weld seam where it goes over the foot. With some metal working skills I'm sure that piece would be really easy to make. As far as attaching to the bottom, if you remove the base and run the shackle through the hole of the bar I'm sure that would be more than strong enough. The bar supports everything anyway. Biggest thing is making sure the kit you put together is made with material string enough to hold the weight. Hope my answer made sense and helped you out.

@danz1910 , good deal, bud. It's definitely a handy tool to have on your rig. Get a little practice with it in a controlled situation so you're familiar with how it all works. Be sure to keep the jack lubed up also. It does not work when it's not lubed. Just keep a can of spray lube with you. Another cool thing about these jacks is that you can swap in the 60-inch bar as an upgrade. If you search "Hillbilly Row Machine" you can find a video on my old channel where I'm using the jack with winch kit while standing on ice. It's what inspired me to do a tutorial type video for this channel. Your off road trips will only get better now that you have a way to self recover. Have fun out there!

Thanks for the video! Very informative! I have seen some videos where the setup is reverse from what your doing. For example the chain is hooked to the vehicle and the Jack is close to the vehicle with the base facing away. Seems to work the same. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the view and comment. I have seen it done the other way and in fact the instruction that came with the kit shows it done from the other way. I like doing it this way because I'm usually pulling myself out of the mud. By rigging it the way I do in this video I am usually not working in a mud hole...just do happens in this video my recovery point happened to be at the edge of one, go figure. I have never had an issue pulling like this. Never made sense to me to be pulling a vehicle out while walking in front of it as I pulled it out. As far as I can tell, as long as you're hooked securely to the stuck vehicle and a proper recovery point the jack doesn't know the difference of what point it's attached. Its just going to pull the chain as you jack. I'm sure there are instances for each hookup. This is the only method I've ever had to use. Hope this helps.

Well Brad...you gave me something to think about. Like I said in the video it's just the way I always did it and it's always been fine. But the added mass aspect of really got me thinking. I know the jack is the fuse in the system. Everything I use to rig it up is rated at least twice the working load of the jack. After reading your comment and question I really see no reason for the extra shackle. It's just 1 more unneeded peice of equipment. Thanks for watching and asking a very good question. Thanks. The chains can be sketchy. If I feel like I'm putting a lot of pressure on the setup, I generally throw some winch blankets over the chain and/or straps. The Hi-Lift jack is the "weak" point of the system, so it should stop well before a chain breaks. Any recovery can and is inherently dangerous, so got to take care while doing it. Hard to enjoy off-roading when your hurt or worse.

I started out with a cheap come along years ago when I first got into offroading. It was okay had a lotbof issues with cable bind when putting a lot of pressure on it. But, using them in a pair....that might work pretty well. Might have to pick a couple up and give them another try. Would be nice not resetting every 48 inches of pulling!

I believe they are 19 feet. I bought them from Harbor Freight when I had a $19.99 coupon for them. It's 3/8" grade 43 trucker/towing chain. It has a stated 5400 pound work load which is right at the Hi-Lift jacks limit. Glad my video was a help to you. Thanks for watching.

I had a chain break on recovery and it flung broke rear window. Do you have any safety measures for that?

Good question. I have placed a jacket over the chain while winching before. It was when I was putting A LOT of pressure on the set up from a really good stuck! Winch blankets are pretty inexpensive as well. They have pockets in them to hold weight so when a cable/rope/chain breaks it deadens it and falls to the ground. Another option is looping a recovery strap or tree saver strap around the cable/rope/chain. I'll for sure have to do a video where I use a different ways of absorbing the energy from a snapped cable/rope/chain. I do have another video using an electric winch...but I can't remember if I used a winch blanket in that video or not. Basically anything fairly soft and light weight that can absorb the energy should work. You just need to slow it down and always make sure you're to the side of it. Got to stay out of harms way so you can continue to have fun. Hope what I said makes sense. Thanks for watching and commenting.

The Hi-Lift can be found online for around $75 for the 48 inch model like in the video. To buy the 60 inch version is around $100. I replaced the bar on my 48 inch with a 60 inch bar, I have a video of that in my library. The winch kit is around $75. You'll need to buy 3/8 inch link chain which varies in prices depending on how long it is and the grade (strength) you get. I bought mine from Harbor Freight (discount tool store) for $20 (with coupon/normally $40) for 13 foot lengths. Now if you're more on a budget there are cheaper jacks out there. They're referred to as farm jacks...for lifting tractors in a field. Thing to remember is this, when you're stuck on the trail do you want to rely on something cheap to get you out? Hi-Lift has a reputation for being a great jack and it is. On a budget the Hi-Lift with winch kit is great for recovery, but I do prefer my electric winch because its not nearly as tiring to use! One last thing though, if you plan on offroading a Hi-Lift jack, in my opinion, is one of MUST HAVES for any rig.

Chain systems also require safety blankets, particularly when standing alongside. Your coupling hooks are not suited to haul on chain links, you can buy the correct ones, even have both. Otherwise OK.

Thanks for the blanket recommendation. I'll start throwing one on my chain from now on. The weak link of the system is the jack itself. The safe working load limit of everything else used is well above what the jacks limit. Thanks for the view and comment.

I have one...and it's great! I started out with the Hi-Lift due to not being able to afford an electric winch. Wanted to make this video to show how to use the Hi-Lift as a winch for those that may not be able to afford an electric either. But yeah, 100% agree with ya....if you can afford an electric winch it's a much better way to go. Still carry my Hi-Lift setup though as a back up plan.
