Another video tutorial from passfaaexams.com/ taken from our Private pilot knowledge test prep software.
In this video we are going to simplify the questions pertaining to Wind Indicators (such as wind socks and tetrahedrons), and the Landing Direction the pilot should use.
Many applicants find these Private pilot knowledge test questions to be quite confusing and often end up picking the wrong answer, so, as usual, let us teach you a couple of tricks to guarantee you will always pick the right answer on the test on the ground and the correct traffic pattern in the air.

Makes sense, I guess my only problem is that I don't understand why runway 27 isn't runway 09. Or is the marker saying From North, with that arrow indication
@gonzaloluna1989

i was getting confused with that but I saw another video that explains that 09 runway STARTS in the WEST(270) but is headed towards 90 degrees, in relation to North. So if you take runway 18(180%), you are in the north end of the runway headed south to 180% AND at the end of runway 18 is the number 36. They don't want us to be pilots. I guess we should look at it as your direction, just getting used to it. I imagine myself in Los Angeles and want to go to New york. lets say it is a 40 degrees straight o New york. I would take runway 04, so I would be headed North East straight to New York. When I get back from New York I would take runway 22, that would take me on a South East line to L.A.

•With regards to WIND DIRECTION : the number ie. 180 is the direction it is coming FROM In the case of 180 of course that means the wind is blowing from the south or 180°… Same thing. •With regards to runway numbers: The runway number is the direction the runway is facing. In other words if you take off from runway “18” (which is actually “180” because the last zero is always removed) you will be rolling down and taking off in the direction 180° (south). So because we want to always take-off INTO the wind. Life is made very easy because you want to takeoff from the runway that is closest in number to the wind direction. Hence perfect scenario (for runway “18” would of course be runway “18” with wind that is blowing (from) 180. You would then be taking off directly into the wind.

thank you for the video, but uh I'm a little confused about something that the arrow in the picture showing the north at the top why is the airport runway on the top is number 18 not #36 and usually number 18 point to the South and usually runway numbers are the same like compass directions? also why you make a right traffic pattern at tetrahedron?
@GianLucaNoia
@GianLucaNoia 3 жыл бұрын
The runway number points to the direction you will be taking off towards. So if you take off from runway 18 your nose will be pointing south.

What if you only have the left picture. How do you determine if the traffic pattern is right vs left
@juliapannone371
@juliapannone371 6 ай бұрын
See the little segmented circle where the tetrahedron is? and those little tick marks that stick out of the segmented circle? Those simulate the runways and the traffic pattern for it. When you draw it out on that picture on the left similar to how he draws it out on the right, you would get a traffic pattern where turns into runway 18 where you would turn to the right for the traffic pattern and a left turn into runway 36 for the traffic pattern. Hopefully this makes sense !

Since we land into the wind, couldn't the wind direction cause the traffic patterns to turn towards the right one day and then left the next day?
@GianLucaNoia
@GianLucaNoia 2 жыл бұрын
Negative Sir. The wind only dictates the preferred runway to land on while most traffic patterns are dictated by either terrain, noise abatement or some other reason. for more on this: passfaaexams.com/private-written-preparation-course-10-off/

Someone help me. Does the right diagram telling me to land on RW27??
@rubenvillanueva622
@rubenvillanueva622 5 жыл бұрын
Gary Nelson The windsock is pointing Southeast, wind coming from the Northwest. We land with the wind at our nose, or as close as possible to it. Looking at the runways, runway 36, appears to be the one to land on. You will be have a crosswind across your nose, but that is much safer than a tailwind, behind you.
@joymukerjee5642
@joymukerjee5642 5 жыл бұрын
Gary Nelson yes, the wind is from North west ( say around 310). We obviously want to land with a headwind for a shorter ground roll etc. so with that logic we will want to land on RW 27 with a RIGHT TRAFFIC pattern and NOT RW 36 which has a left traffic pattern. Also, we will prefer a right crosswind and NOT a left crosswind, since a left crosswind tends to amplify the left turning tendency of an aircraft. So the gentleman above me isn’t entirely correct. Hope this helped

so are those "L" shaped indicators and positions standard? How do you determine when they should be used or if the runway should be simply DEFAULT LEFT if not right pattern is indicated?
@GianLucaNoia
@GianLucaNoia 2 жыл бұрын
Always refer to the Ls to determine if the pattern is standard or not. The Chart will also indicate non standard as well as the A/FD. passfaaexams.com/

how do i figure out what the runway numbers are on the test if there is no diagram and the runway numbers are only listed in the answer choices?
@GianLucaNoia
@GianLucaNoia 4 жыл бұрын
Well runway numbers are set based on the direction you will be taking off towards. So if you are taking off towards the North the runway will be 360. Towards the West 270, etc. 18 09 27 36
