Wind & Rain Camping in Tiny Stone Hut with Tarp for Roof.. Attempt #3

Someone a long time ago spent weeks, maybe months building that hut stone by stone, every day of it being treated to that weather with far simpler equipment to protect them. They persevered and built something that stands to this day. I can imagine them applauding your tenacious effort to use it as an abode again.

Yes, I thought that some kind of plastic door would help to make a ' calm zone ' inside the stone hut.... Possibly put a line of stones on top of the cover, and resting on the wide stone walls...This would help to reduce the tearing damage to the cover..

I used to do a lot of tracking camping out. Can't anymore with my health, it's great to see it hasn't died out. My kids had no interest growing up, roughing it to them was not having a mobile phone with them. The gear now is so expensive. Better buying ex-army surplus. It's good a little heavier but it stands up to the test. Squaddie proof. Great to see your videos. Reminds me of my oldest daughter you're very sweet. Somewhat over 50 years ago, I persuaded my employer to sponsor me on an Outward Bound course in the Lake District. This video reminds me of our ‘big night out’. Just a map, a silva compass and a heavy tarp. No worries about ripping there (just maybe a crushed back from the weight!). Found a good two-sided sheep pen up on the moors and huddled-up there on the lee side. One of the most memorable times of my life - and I’ve had a good life! Magic!

Alternative method, take a ratchet strap that will fit around the full circumference of the hut. Wrap that round about 2 inches above ground level, tie the tarp's cordage to the strap. A 2nd ratchet strap around the top of the hut will eliminate most of the flapping. You'll lose the little arch at the door though, but a short tarp/cloth attached to the two straps would create a door cover anyway.

I came to say that :) larger tarp and a ratchet strap would have been my plan. I'd have used a 5m tarp and single ratchet round the middle, then wrapped the loose ends of the tarp round it a bit b4 final tighten and a pole in the middle. Could probably do it with a bit of fence wire and a stick to twist it if no ratchet strap was available. If it was for survival though I'd probably have used one corner of the hut.

Wire, racket straps, mahoosive tarp. How much you wanna bring with ya😂😂😂 Why not some timber and slate to reinstate the roof 😂😂…… couple of butt hinges for the front door? 😂😂 Think ratchets on that surface would have shredded the tarp in that wind against the rock ……. Now a few layers of shrink wrap from each corner would protect it and hold it firmly in place. We build in a lot of remote locations …… but arid great for cover but rope and Ratchet give way ……. Weirdly shrink wrap kept everything dry, together and solid 🤷‍♂️

@@LeeCharles90 I think, because the tarp would be secured all the way around instead of at a small number of points the movement would be much smaller and point stress more distributed as to stop it tearing. True, it's an untested theory and in real life I'd not want to trust it without a backup but elsewise you'd need to bring something to stand the tarp off the wall at the top edge, such as some wood or towling material (both a bit heavy and cumbersome).

Well done, you finally cracked it. My hint with tarps is to make lots of short bungee loops for the tie out points and have all you guy lines terminated with small carabiners. I wrap the guy lines up with small hair ties so that they don’t tangle. We are never to old to learn, I know, in my 70s and still out in the wilds of Scotland when ever I can. Cheers, Jim.

Brilliant. Last time I was near it, it was on Ulva, off Mull. A pleasant day, a walk up. Then it fogged up. the rain started. So it's my bag and a bivvy bag. I was beside an old bothy, just the fallen stones. I got well cold, and getting out for a pee was tricky. So as dawn broke I had a brew and off to get the boat back. I was wet, tired and utterly happy.

Claire's attempt nr 4. May I suggest the following steps Claire. Take up 6 timber A frames, approx 20 feet of 4X2, around 200 roofing tiles, scaffolding, a Workmate...... Yep tha should fit into your slightly bigger rucksack, (or a JCB would be more advisable 😁😁) it should, with tea breaks, take around two days, then the build should be completed. Method 2 would include getting Nick Knowles out and his DIY,SOS people out, and saying that you live in the roofless building with your 8 kids and limbless partner... They'll be finished within 2 hours, and created a roadway to your Range Rover. Fantastic. Love the channel as always.

Good persistence! You took to heart what folks said on previous attempts. Yes, you needed that pole. Being a tent designer for a few successful companies for many years, perhaps you will appreciate tents a bit more in the future. I love tarp tents too, but generally don't try to stretch them over rocks for the reason you well know now. But small protected areas in trees do work well. Best for the future.

Hello Claire, I liked what you did in this video from your last attempt. ! You are on the right track. If you had 12 individual socks you could fill them with rocks and place them evenly around the top of the walls. Heavy enough to stay where you place them and they would be the only contact between your tarp and the top of the wall. Tighten the guy lines accordingly and this will pin the tarp to the sock covered rocks keeping them in place and not letting them contact the sharp rocks. The pole was definitely a great idea as it kept the tarp more taught. Love the adventure , you never disappoint . !

Well done you 👏, I love old stone construction. It would be amazing if it could be made into a permanent dry hut for all to utilize. OK, you need lots of help, Build up one wall higher , a foot would do , carry up 8 wooden polls for top. Make lean-2 . Cover with 2 traps, add bundles of dry Scots pine branches, cover with moss and earth, shake grass seed on top . Build a dog leg wall outside door with loose rock. Yes, you would need an army of help, but it would be amazing when finished. P.s. Build a rock raised bed to sleep on. The walls are so already amazingly well structured, it would be great. 13:47

You are doing important work. This is a great example of what does and does not work in an emergency, if such an event or situation arose. Lots of things to overcome, mainly wind and rain. Of course sometimes the solution is to give up and use the tarp in a more suitable placement if this was a real situation and not a controlled test as you have done.

looks like the same tarp i use on my fuel pit in my yard. a top cover really 1 of 3. best place for gas cool dry dark for up to 15 months. the sun sure beats on it to replace every 4 months. you did a nice job securing it down 👍

Reminds me of the time I was actually stuck out on a golf course with my dog one night during to lightning, rain and floods. Got stuck next to an old stone wall surrounded by trees. Just me wind proof umbrella, golf towel and me bag. Camped on it and fell asleep. Woke up as the ground gave away to a stream it had decided to form under me. Only went out for a few hours…….. 20 hours later I managed to walk back home😂😂 Dog loved it😂😂 Love what you do……great work

Hello Claire.. You and Karen have made me realise that there is something missing. Had meeting with doctor today and she has told me my health has to come first. I follow you both when your out on your adventure,s. I miss the freedom and nights away from the norm. Soome thoughts and hints... We spent several nights in similar huts. So some thoughts and hints... 1. You need to prevent the wind from coming into the hut door, otherwise your tarp becomes a kinda sail and flaps up and down causing consequencies. So use another tarp or ground sheet to cover the door fframe or use the tarp in rectangular shape and put one side down to close it. 2. When you are putting the tarp over the top of the walls wind comes in all holes and it again becomes a sail. Find the way to mount it at least 50cm below the top edge of the walls but from inside. Use stretchy cords, find the way to atrtach it to inside walls make make it a kind of roof but inside the walls, incline one side for water drinage. Walls will stop most of the wind. Well done anyway!! Congrats and respect. Good experience.

It's funny cause I love seeing you going to that hut . It's bad weather and don't look enjoyable for you out in the cold and rain , but if you were lost and came across that you would think it's a 5 star hotel lol . I think you should go back again and try and find some way to cover the door and maybe put some moss on top of the rocks so they don't rip thru tarp . Watching you fight with the tarp in those insane winds made me laugh and hurt for you at the same time. I once found a beautiful creek side spot in the Black hills of South Dakota a monsoon of a rain hit around 3am in a matter of moments water was rushing though my tent I grabbed it lose and ran up the bank to where my motorcycle was parked and spent the rest of the morning sitting on a picnic table watching my campsite wash away I rolled the wet tent and everything in it and draped it over the back of my bike and drip dryed all the way to Yellowstone. A lot of lessons learned in a hurry Lol. Your something else young lady,God bless you.

Claire, I have to say that as soon as I saw your nice DD tarp getting pulled out..... I cringed, knowing you were going to be sacrificing a fine piece of gear, and I do own that same tarp, in order to successfully camp in that awesome old near ruin in that awfully lousy weather. That kind of rock weathers well, and holds its sharp edges just as well. Oh well! And thank goodness for the bivy! Your zest for solo adventuring out there regardless of conditions it seems, is truly admirable.

Tenacious and I suspect you like to win, 🥇 I resonate with your Story, we spent two years searching for the missing “Kaimai DC3 engine” from New Zealand’s worst aircraft disaster (23 souls) to be used for a museum 60th anniversary memorial. We located both engines up a dangerous & rugged stream canyon. We finally got it choppered out which put that Story to bed too, it’s called closure, humans like closure ❤

I did not see your first two videos about this hut, but this one paid off for you in your hard work. The next few times you go, bring a file with you so you can file the edges of the rocks to make them rounded and smooth and to prevent your tarp from ripping. After that, you can work on building a permanent strong roof made out of logs and thatch. There are a plethora of videos here on KZbin teaching how to accomplish that. From there, you can work on adding rooms.

Well done for persevering!! I have had too many experiences with ticks in ruined buildings like that as the sheep and deer like to use them to shelter from the wind. Looks a great little spot for an late summer stay though.

Very entertaining. I admire your tenacity and willingness to take risks. I will say, in wet weather, I only use a poly-fill jacket with minimal stitch lines. I love my down, but it's an unwise choice at times. I don't know if you had fun, or just wanted to see if it might work. Anyways, well done.
