Just watched this again. Would be interesting to see that same demonstration with a trailer attached to the truck.

Agreed.

Further, I'd like to know if a pointed trailer is better or WORSE! It may "slice" through the air, or it may just present more surface area.

Yes I agree with Thomas. Please add a travel trailer without camper shell, then with a camper shell, and lastly if you could fabricate a wind deflector for the cab of the truck that would be the icing on the cake. BTW most travel trailers have a slant/fiberglass nose now so to be fair to the test maybe your trailer should represent the newer design! Nothing better than a bunch of strangers creating work for you!

Id love to see the difference if you add a roof spoiler to 3rd brake light area and an additional one to the tailgate

Wish the topper had a longer flat roof, that most do. Do again, also with a A.R.E. DCU wedge 23”/29”, cap model.

The best way to increase economy and efficiency is to increase air speed under the vehicle and to get the windtail as far back behind the vehicle as possible with the smoothest transition.

I was hoping to see something going on between the cab and the bed cap. I put on on my truck and i think it started making this buffering sound

What's the scaled speed? What does the inside of the tailgate look like look like when it's in the up position? Is there a force gauge attached to this?

I'm actually out here looking for information because I just put a relatively lightweight aluminum shell on my f250 and noticed an improvement in gas mileage

Funny. I noticed that also. Just put a hi topper DCU.

I’m a little surprised with the full cap test. I theorized that the sudden drop-off with the full height at the back would create a larger area of low pressure resulting in increased drag. It actually doesn’t look like that.
@henrent2 жыл бұрын
To my eye at 2:04 you can see a larger triangle of low pressure behind the truck with the squared off topper compared with no top and the tapered one. I was surprised at how much bigger it was.

Good video you should make more with different types of covers and trailers.

Someone correct me and tell me the proper way to explain this. The airflow is going over the truck and drops off the bed (without a topper) creating a vortex that whips back and hits the tailgate?
@MustangsTrainsMowers2 жыл бұрын
Did you try putting the end of the smoke pipe under the front of the truck. I’m guessing that a truck that’s lowered could get better highway mpg.
@calebstrawn9 ай бұрын
Lowering it absolutely improves mpg. In college I dropped my ‘89 C1500 3” in the front and 4” in the rear and picked up an average of 2mpg with no other changes. With 2.73 rear gears, my 5.7L TBI V8, I was averaging 21mpg on the highway running 80 on the long road trips back home. 😎

@LV4TD1012 жыл бұрын
If you slow the video speed down to 25% you can really see all the turbulence areas. This also shows why full size trucks are such pigs on gas going down the highway 😄

I think this is misleading! I tossed a few small empty boxes in the bed of my truck and drove down the road. It looked like the rodeo from hell back there! So this demonstration doesn't show you the enormous turbulence behind the cab!

Try laying down flat in the bed of a truck with the tailgate closed. You'll hardly feel the wind at all.
