20inch barrels is what the 5.56 was designed for. they add a lot of life to that little round compared to 16inch.
@gsxr11894 жыл бұрын
Actually a 20" barrel makes less of a performance increase downrange to 556 than most any rifle caliber say compared to 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 308, 224 Valkyrie, 6.5 Creedmoor,.....etc. The reason why is 556 is comparatively a very inefficient caliber with a low Ballistic Coefficient. Think of pouring water into a cup with holes in it and you can pour a bunch of water into that cup but with holes in it it is not efficient enough to maintain the water. Just like how you can throw a bunch of velocity at a low BC low efficiency 556 round and as it travels downrange the same thing happens it sheds that velocity quicker than other calibers. Also rounds loose velocity quicker at higher velocities meaning that a round will drop from 3000 FPS to 2500 FPS in less distance than it will from 2500 FPS to 2000 FPS. In fact if you compare a 20" barrel to a 16" in 556 at the muzzle the 20" will be on average 100 FPS faster with most loads however at 600 yards the 20" will only be 50 FPS faster than 16" and that's because of the reasons above. Therefore I don't see the point in chasing max velocity in 556 I'll just take the caliber for what it is a lightweight inexpensive low recoil caliber that's probably the best or one of the best choices for self and home defense and in that light I like 16" barrels over 20".
@Doobie6034 жыл бұрын
The 20 inch is good for about 200fps more vs the 16 inch and like 400fps faster than a 10 inch. According to Paul Harrils numbers. Not a big change in accuracy though.

The only real, historically faithful A1 that's mass-market would be the Brownells A1, and that's about $1400. A pretty big price diff, but it if you're looking for a very close clone to the original patterns, it's a good option. For someone looking for an A1 style shooter that could even be used as the bones for a workin' AR, this one is quite attractive. Most people who are looking into buying a retro ar-15 aren’t buying it for shtf type stuff. Most people looking into retro rifles are either old Veterans or collectors with an interest in history. For that, people would be happier with buying a more faithful replica. For the price, id just get a Brownells. Which is what I did. I Paid $960 for the brn-16a1 about 10 months ago. When it was on sale.

that's about what I spent assembling an A1 clone from a parts kit and with the 1/7 twist it is likely a more versatile rifle, that being said I love my parts kit A1 clone

You can always add an a1 stock to this. As I added an a1 stock to my a3 build because that little bit shorter stock is actually a lot nicer for standing up shooting, and an a1 barrel does balance a little nicer than an a2 profile or HBAR (which a lot of a2 and a3/a4 rifles come with)

Brownells A1 is around 900 to 1,000 on sale, closer to 1,200 when not on sale. One can build an A1 clone with Brownells parts a little cheaper, especially if you don't care about the A1 lower and want an A1 inspired build. If you use a lower from Aero or Anderson and you don't care about sourcing some of the pricier components like the repro A1 port door and tear drop forward assist. What makes the A1 fun for me is the light weight and long sight radius and easy to use sights. It's definitely a good time at the range.

Your reference to POU is spot on, Nutnfancy. In my case, as a young Vietnam infantry soldier in 1966, I was issued a brand spankin new M-16 upon my in country arrival, with NO prior training on this weapon. After having trained on an M-14 in both basic and AIT training, I was pleasantly surprised to see how light the rifle was and initially thought I was Billy Bad Ass with this in hand. That is, until actually using one during inclement weather and battle conditions. Mine, along with many others, starting having problems, specifically fail to eject problems, especially when fired on full auto. Extra attention to cleaning failed to rectify this ongoing problem. Ordinance replaced the extractor a couple of times, something that didn't really help this phenomenon either. So, when I rotated, I was so happy to get rid of my M-16 and for more than forty years thereafter, I never understood all the AR hype and refused to even consider the platform in civilian life, mostly referring to them as AR jammomatics. In 2013, with a vast shortage of available black rifles and fearing that a total ban on the AR platform was imminent, I went against my long standing convictions about its personal unreliability and purchased my first AR, a S&W M&P Magpul FDE edition, on sale at that time for a very reasonable $699.00. Fortunately, modern AR versions are much more reliable than my Vietnam era M-16 and, ultimately, did not get banned, so I added a few more to my collection, even building one from scratch with various kits and accessories. I wish Windham Weaponry success with this A1 offering but, in my case, I don't like the retro look, as it reminds me too much of my 1966 M-16 jammomatic. Just a former soldier's perspective, memories of which are now mellowed by over fifty years of trying to forget just how undependable these early version rifles were.

@pleitrap70734 жыл бұрын
If you ever fought with an XM16E1 you hated the unreliability. You watched your brothers being killed either because there was only one cleaning rod per man or the cleaning rod was stuck in the barrel while another brother died. When making those straight up, or down, Central Highland humps and slides with 60+ pounds and no rucksack frame, you appreciated the 6 7/8 pound weight, the accuracy, and the low recoil. In actuality the problem was the military ball powder ammo, not the weapon. Eugene Stoner RIP.

AK Community: “We want good quality parts so our guns don’t explode and kill us!” AR Community: *sips bud-lite from a rocks glass* “We want our screws to be period correct and a proper flashhider. Also it’s too pricey for our white gloved, perfectly moisturized hands.” 😝😂

1:9 maximum twist rate! I put one together but the barrel is a 1:7. I wish I had ordered the 1:9 twist. Shoots smooooooth! Recoil will put a smile on your face. I also did not buy the carrying handle and I did put a scope on it. It is still very fun to shoot. I did order a crappy (non-polished) trigger group from PSA. I used a new Arkansas stone to polish the pertinent trigger surfaces and it turned out to be a fantastic trigger job. I am a stock guy for the most part.

My A2 style AR-15 has a Windham Weaponry upper assembly. So far, it's been flawless with a steady diet of Federal XM193. PS - That nostalgia thing you talked about is exactly why I have an A2 style AR-15. I carried the M16A2 in the Army. I wasn't a huge fan of the M16 when I was in the military. But after returning to civilian life, the nostalgia bug bit me.

You're dealing with a small minority of retro rifle cloners that want everything period correct. I personally think it just needs to look the part. Who needs a 1:12 twist pencil barrel these days anyways?
