I am a US Army M-1 tanker and found out about funk caused by bacteria that lives in the water at the bottom of diesel fuel tanks. The water condenses on the cold surfaces and rains down into the fuel, settling into the bottom of the tanks. When we got our tanks they had been sitting in the rain for a long time and a lot of funk was down there. We went through 3 filters per hour for quite a few hours finally we had to pull the in-tank-pumps out and put rags into the tanks and use broom sticks to swab the bottom of the fuel tanks. We did get them clean, it just took a long time. May I suggest you arrange the hoses so that changing the filters is easier and carry a bunch of filters.

Hi there Holly. I use the same sail slides on my mainsail. I lubricate them with a silicone aerosol spray that I found. I spray them about every 3 months. The spray doesn’t stain the sail either. Just a thought for you. Fair winds to you.

You seem incredibly suited to this way of life. You are one of five boats I am following. I think I have learned as much from you as the other four combined (not to slight any of them). I now see that do it yourself maintenance is the secret of making this life style affordable. And a lot of this is doing unlovely jobs, like working on the engine.
@krautAmerican5 жыл бұрын
hi Holly, I have a grand banks 36 twin diesels....the main thing about a diesel is clean fuel with no water, and has to be primed to get out air bubbles, the best water separator is a Racor 500MA10, I have one on each engine. get one for your boat and get rid of or put in line with one you have now and you shouldn't have any more probs as long as you change filters, and you will see water at bottom of bowl, which you can drain with a turn of a valve in 2 seconds, the filter is 3 times size you have now, there should be a bleeder screw on your injector pump where you open a screw and bleed the air out of the fuel lines, this is a huge reason it is hard to start if air is in the lines... and remember diesels ignite on compression, not from a spark plug, so now imagine air in just one of the pistons and that's when you crank and crank with just spitting....when you get out in the swells all that rust and algae and crap gets all shaken into the fuel lines and you just dont have a good enough filter to get rid of the water and rust etc so it farts and quits from water in lines, I have a good friend who is diesel mechanic taught me all this so I could work on mine, I hope this helps and get the filter, ask around the marine, almost all power boats have the racor 500MA10 water seperators on them, it has a unique design...….and throw some sea foam injector cleaner in your tank once in a while, actually you put it in the racor for full strength...….good luck girly girl I enjoy your vids www.ebay.com/itm/Racor-500MA10-Fuel-Filter-Water-Separator-Assembly-/281762006579 kzbin.info

About a year late, I'm trying to catch up. But an old aviation trick, is to strain your fuel through pantyhose. You can't fill up as quick, and you kind of look stupid, but it works. If your engine quits on a boat, sail or otherwise, you have some choices with wind and current. In a plane, your only choice is "Where am I going to crash"...

If your problem does turn out to be fuel, I won't be surprised. Water in fuel happens on land, we use special filters, fuel/water seperators. They are a little larger and the ones I like the most you have windows and can see the water building up. Yes, they need to be drained periodically and cleaned. Did I say I love that sailing dinghy ? Probably for the fifth time ?

Hi Holly, I enjoy your videos very match. I have a advise for you ; Clean your diesel tank trough the opening on top, you have a steel diesel-tank and the inside is not coated . So every steel tank should be cleaned now and then and for your tank it is now. You can clean the diesel bud the dirt is on the bottom and the sides as wel as the top. this can be very rusty due to condense. Please do your self a favor and remove the washing pins on the railing wen you are sailing, I once fel nearly overboard in a rough sea by grepping on such a washing pin.. You dont have to do this I am just concerned. I wish you all the best and always 1 foot water below the keel. Greeting from a sailor and boat engine mechanic.

Secret beach? Hahahah! Grew up there in the Canal Zone. That is no secret beach and there are no crocs. Where did you get that?🤔🤔🤔Your at the old Ft. Sherman(Shelter Bay). To bad the canal took back the old Cristobal Yacht Club. That was a fun place. So many yachties. Go down the coast towards San Blas. A place called White Beach. Now that’s a secret beach. Where you were, we would go at night and you can pick up a bunch of Spanish lobsters walking the reef. Small but great to eat. Crocs🤣🤣🤣. Hope you enjoy Panama. I miss it.

you need at least a couple of spare fuel filter elements, water pump impellers and freshwater strainer filter. Holly, you know how to bleed the fuel system so you might consider a plastic carry tank that you can connect ahead of the low-pressure pump if the problem recures. Changing the fuel in the tank helps but it doesn't get rid of the crap lurking at the bottom. If you have a chance get the tank out and steam cleaned at a good boatyard. then you will be home free.
