Doing the bottom of a boat is a right a passage for a boater. People who buy large boats (this is a 28 footer) in the 32-45 foot range don't realize how much work it is to get the bottom done every year. I had a 26 footer and it was always a challenge to get the bottom done for the season.

Self steering lines. Can you move the line along now and again to change the wear point? Apparently ball bearing blocks make a big difference. Lube, the best is supposed to be Sailkote. WD40, once we cleaned the through hull speed impeller in the water, sprayed with WD40…it went all sticky! Hell and very wet to get back. In the old days, we just put the boat against the quay, do one side, turn around on the tide, do the other. Tying up against a quay seems to be a lost art.

I used to do bottom jobs, good god I hated them so bad. Even so, just get a nice sander and sand it and be done with it. A 'secret' is to use lots and lots of sandpaper. Don't cheap out on making a piece go too far. I know this is old, but just sand it, suffer then finish with it. You can sand the entire bottom in two horrible days, maybe 1. You don't have to take it to gelcoat if the paint is sticking well.

Hey you, an advice from a german Automotive-Painter, who has done several Boat-Jobs in the last past years too: if you use a short-haired felt- roller (what most of the people do that have no experiences with sprayguns and what is quiet okay for Antifouling Paint) please take care (in the future) that you get SOME MATERIAL ONTO YOUR SURFACE ! Dryed material thickness is the key to sucess. That means: if you do NOT put a DECENT coat of wet material to your surface you can just forget it ! I've seen pictures (9:37 in your video) where you squeezed out the last drop out of your roll trying to "cover" the surface. This is not the way ! Dip your roll into the paint, roll it out first onto your grid, and then applay it to your surface THICKLY. As thick as it is possible before it starts to drip-off. The thickness of the dried paintcoat will be the key to sucess. If you squeeze out your roll to the max you will get very poor performance of your just freshly applied Paintcoat. So: stay healthy in these difficult times, fair winds, happy travels and best regards from Germany
@maggie48344 жыл бұрын
Put it on too thick and it’ll take forever to dry. Better to put on multiple thinner coats. I’ve seen guys laying it on with thick nap rollers and a couple days later the travel lift straps are lifting it off. Different people different opinions 😊

QUESTION: Do you have to move the supports (in order to get to those spots) or do the yard hands help with that? Seems if you had to do yourself it might be dangerous?
@X852833 жыл бұрын
Sometimes people just let it ride and ignore those areas on a quick job like this. Sometimes you can use a fast-drying bottom paint and they will let you slap some on real quick as soon as the crane picks it up - then it should hopefully dry before hitting the water. Some paint is like 6 hours and some is 10 min to dry. Obviously if this is your plan it limits your paint choices. Other people will pay for the crane to come back and move the boat a little. This can cost quite a bit unfortunately. The other method is to make sure there are extra supports under the boat and most of the weight is on the keel. Then you can take out one jack at a time, paint under it, wait for it to dry, then put the jack back and remove a different one. Some people will use a bottle jack and some cribbing potentially to make it easier to loosen the jacks, they don't easily loosen under load obviously.
