A most informative video! I have never really considered any of the Windlass sabers, until my grandson got their American Revolutionary saber, which cuts well. Do you have any experience with that particular sword? I may have to ask to see the Foot Soldier's saber next time I'm there. Keep up the great work!

I've had recommendations for the American Revolution with a caution that it's blade forward. Nice design though.

@@michaelrizzo5523 Just back from MRL. You weren't kidding about the small, slippery grip on the 1850 saber! The blade was nice, the weight was good, but the grip would do better on a paring knife. I did give their new Signature Series Towton sword a try. "Light" and "quick" come to mind. Very nimble.

@@clayweaver2066 That one does look promising. Nice to be able to go to MR and actually handle these before rolling the dice on a purchase

@@michaelrizzo5523 I really miss the Warehouse part of their annual sales. You could pick up amazing deals.

As far as windlass sabers I have a Confederate Cavalry Saber, a 1796 light cavalry (sans scabbard) made in the early 90s sold through the Atlanta Cutlery catalog & likely very similar to the Cold Steel version & a British style saber (year?) that was some in the early 90s through the AC catalog. Instead of a British crown in the guard it has a Star of India & the catalog description said it was a model the British issued in India to Indian regiments (if I recall) I also have a Spanish briquette that I think Windlass made but was never in their catalogs & a French 1896 model Cavalry Officer's Sword which I assume Windlass made and is nice with a copper or bronze hilt. Although highly decorated this is a sword more akin to the later British 1908 or the US Cotton sword in that it's a triangular blade, fairy which at the base, very stiff & intended mostly to thrust. It has enough width to get a decent edge on it but it's pretty hefty so wouldn't be so good for melee.

How are you liking your Sword of St Michael? ! ? ! Great review !
@michaelrizzo552314 күн бұрын
Thanks! Spoiler: Despite no distal or profile taper to speak of, I really like it, and am getting a lot of use out of it. Couple more sword reviews to get out before I get to it.

@@michaelrizzo5523 Thank you. I remember in cold steels machete fighting dvd they discuss they thinness of the machetes demonstrated and their weakness against "beating attacks" . Do you think with how thin of stock the St Michael would also be suspectable to those?
@michaelrizzo552310 күн бұрын
@@vanrickenstien It's 4mm-3.5mm but there's a lot of blade presence. Might risk getting chopped into by something beefier.

Thanks for posting. Really interested in These windlass sabers and appreciateyour detailed reviews. I did just got the confederate staff saber. Sadly, I didn't like it- returned. Way over built and uncomfortable. Nice as an inexpensive prop... not what I'm looking for. Wish windlass would redesign their sabers with closer specs to originals, especially with regard to handling. Love their 1796! Their build qualities good, most saber designs just need some work😢

Yeah, more fancy than function, especially out of the box. Will be reviewing their 1796.

I have found that most swords in Eastern Europe, Persia, etc tend to all have small narrow grips but the pommel & their shape make it work. Thus I dont mind them. However on western swords I've found thin grips don't work so well.

Not trying to self promote but I did put up a vid recently where I cut thick pumpkins; 1st sword is a Windlass Confederate Cavalry Saber. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3LEYneVf8yIf80si=bZ_cFjWWY82GJb45

Great review of a mediocre quality sword. Why am I here? Only because I really like your work.
