Windows 10 connecting to an L2TP VPN Server that is behind a NAT

If you are on Windows 10 and are trying to connect to an L2TP server behind a NAT, then you will find that it will not work due to how Microsoft has set up their IP stack. i am facing this error when i am connecting VPN. The remote connection was not made because the attempted vpn tunnels failed. the vpn server might be unreachable. if this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly

No, this message means that you have to enable GRE and IKE passthrough in your router. Some routers have this as a configuration option in their security or firewall section.

It works for me in Win 10 64-bit Pro. I've created AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule=2 (DWORD type) under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent Then rebooted. In my case I had to check also protocol CHAP (along with MS-CHAP v2) in adapter properties of VPN on Security tab.

Hi, the ports for L2TP are 500, 1701 and 4500 UDP, so you should check if all of these are forwarded.

@@gauravgandal6899 I am not sure what you mean. Windows 10 by default will allow these ports through it's firewall, so it is only the router that the ports have to be open on.
