Win 7 was the last good ver of Windows. Win 10 is tolerable, but not as good as 7. But this time the separating line is much thicker. Win7 vs Win10 was separated by the telemetry stuff. Now Win11 is literally high grade AI-powered and fully functional spyware and on top of that fully in the spirit of 1984. Bigger difference between the old and new Win. So, the decision to upgrade or do something else carries bigger implications now. Esp. if you use the device for work, and if that work is somewhat confidential, or intellectual property rights are involved, or secret company know-how, etc. The incentives to move to a different OS are now bigger, than ever for the Win users (but I'm not sure how many of them realize this).

I recently setup a Windows 7 VM with GPU Passthru, got bullied into entirely firewalling the VM off for security reasons (I don't press the big green download button). Windows Explorer is far more responsive than Windows 11 so I don't know how they messed up so bad there. There's only a single control panel. You can actually turn off desktop compositing for the lowest possible latency and it will run most old poorly written applications that need weird Japanese locale settings. Windows 7 is outdated and old, but it does everything an average "normal" user could ever want (sans modern HDR/Raytraced gaming). Use linux instead :^)

The move from XP to Vista is what initially made me try out Linux as an alternative, as the first impression was "not great"... Sadly gaming on Linux back in those days was not as streamlined as it is today and it's safe to say my parents were not happy our "home PC" became much harder to use, so I did not stay too long. I was never a fan of Windows 10, especially the intial releases were atrocious compared to 7 Ultimate at that time.. Up until recently I was using Win11 and I got to like it way more than W10 and never really got the hate it gets and why people are not willing to switch.. That was until I saw a bunch of apps such as "Copilot" being unwillingly installed on my system, with no easy way for said apps to be removed.. This led to my immediate and full time switch to Linux. It's been a few months now and I have no regrets! Windows shall be used by me only on computers I have no control over, i.e. work machines...

Also, since you mentioned it, Steam officially dropped support, but they ended up changing over to chromium 109, so it works fine without patches. Switching to something else is on the table at some point. Can only get those ESUs until Jan 2026, so moving by then is the aim. And yes, ESUs for server 2008 R2 can be installed on 7 with patches.

Some facts from an old fart: I remember Windows 95 being hated amongst gamers because it was sluggish on average PCs, especially in the early years (95-97), before DirectX became commonplace. The first NT-based Windows for regular users wasn't XP, but Windows 2000. At least that was the plan. In reality a lot of PC were ill-equipped to it, so Microsoft released Windows ME as a stopgap. Many people hated ME because it crashed a lot and sacrificed some of the DOS compatibility. In the first years of Windows XP, a lot of users hated it due to the theming which got called "Fisher Price". A lot of power users preferred Windows 2000.

I went fro windows 11 to windows 10 to ubuntu then to windows 10 again. Ubuntu out of the blue became really sluggish. it would become inoperable with 3 tabs open and a youtube video playing. Sadly it doesn't happen with windows 10. I don't use 11 because I can't place the taskbar vertically on the left. I am sure you can debloat it and remove a bunch of telemetry, but not being able to place the taskbar on the left is what did it for me

Windows 2000 was amazingly good and sadly some features got into XP but not Win2k that necessited the change for many. Windows 7 was the last version that maintained the old and good start menu organisation, but it was a resource hog. A blank 64-bit install consumed 2GiB memory. Win10 was half as resource intensive, but majorly borked any manual start menu organisation from Win7.

I'm a bit older than you, so for me the last good version of Windows was 98. I tried XP for a month or so and hated it so thoroughly, especially for all the incompatibilities that prevented me from playing the few games I had, that I just wiped it off the hard drive and went back to dual booting Slackware and Win98. Sure, they fixed some of those problems with service packs, but they didn't even have SP1 when I tried it and it's a huge part of why I went Linux only way back then.

I don't remember much of 95, 98, 2000 or Millenium and did not even have enough reference or knowledge to judge back them. I like XP but it was pretty buggy at times. People give XP too much credit sometimes in my opinion and maybe because it was leagues better than what came before. I never had the option to switch to Vista really. I loved Windows 7. It was amazing. I never wanted to switch to 8 because I did not like it. My roommate was using it and I really disliked it. I was forced to switch to 10 when I bought a new PC because of the lack of driver support for 7. I disliked it. I dislike it to this day but it become bearable. Like a chronic pain you are just used to. Like bad knees you know all to well and know when not rely on them too much and have built your habits around avoiding to mess with them. That being said, I am slowly transitioning to Linux. There are too much projects going on for me and I cannot do it outright. It will take roughly 3-6 months more. However, from my short time with Mint until now, it feels way better than Windows 10 ever felt.

XP X64 was good for the time. I used OS/2 v3/v4 before then but when the middle service packs for windows 2000 X64 came out I switched. Then went to XP x64. Then they got smart and just made windows 7 x64 and x32. I skipped Vista because too many people had driver/stability issues. I had windows v8 on a laptop but that was horrible and quickly upgraded that to v8.1 and then w10. Windows 10 is now my OS on this desktop. I'm going to investigate linux again soon because W11 looks like a massive hassle forcing internet logins etc. That's just unfriendly and a major hassle. They even do this for minecraft logins now.

How can Windows 7 be perceived as good if it removed the MIDI control panel and the number of unread emails in the lock screen? Most of the reason it's memed and remembered fondly is because people compare it with Vista, but if you skipped straight from XP to 7, it was a UX and bloat downgrade in so many ways.

2000 was the goat no one used at home unless they had too much money. XP stock was a mess, XP SP2 and 3 were solid for its time. Vista was good if you had a PC made for it. I had one, enjoyed it but also messed things up being way too young to think about security. 7 was just Vista SP2 with an uglier design 8 was Metro, 8.1 fixed it minor but damage was done. Otherwise it was 7. 10 had some good new features for gamers (XBOX integration and VR) and a proper startmenu again. Is it good? Depends on which era of 10 we are talking about. 11 even more at releaae sounded to me like a forced mess.

its not that i dont care that windows is getting terrible, i am actually trying linux again right now. my issue is linux is just soooooo damn different then windows in pretty much everything it dose its too much of a jump for most people to re learn everything. i have been trying to figure out how to add split tunnel support for steam for my private internet access client. in windows you just go to the folder add the exe... linux who the fuck knows i have just given up trying. installing apps is another big one, everyone here will say package managers are easier, ok cool but its just as easy to go to a website and download the exe and run it. and in my limited experience its actually a hell of a lot faster to go that route because you dont have to keep typing y enter to build shit in the console. or if its not faster it no slower thats for sure. even just trying to make a file in a folder on youur drive, nope! your not allowed to do that because its root only or some shit. for wide spread linux adoption it needs to be more like windows, the second it becomes more windows like to use mass adoption will happen. but as of now, yeah not going to happen EDIT: i use arch btw
@acidiclight
@acidiclight 10 күн бұрын
You should never ever need root to make folders within your home (user) folder, if you're doing anything elsewhere on the disk then even Windows will require admin to do it. Most package managers accept a "-y" option to automatically answer yes at those prompts, though they're the same as clicking "Next" blindly in an installer (without the risk of getting optional adware and PUPs bundled with the program). We do have the traditional "download the app from its website" workflow but it's distro-specific and harder to work with as a developer. If that's the workflow you prefer though, then AppImage may pique your interest. (though its maintainer has questionable behaviour, having being banned from OBS's git) I think, what needs to happen, is for distros to all agree on a single package format and package manager. Upstream packaging (where the app dev packages the app, and not distro maintainers) should also be more common, and thankfully that's starting to become the case thanks to Flatpak. If you really want to make the switch, the better thing to do is to keep a Windows system around but swap out your usual software for FOSS equivalents. Get familiar with them, and their workflows, and then Linux won't be as overwhelming of a switch. Definitely experiment with KDE's stuff, many of their apps have Windows versions.
@dsvechnikov
@dsvechnikov 10 күн бұрын
@@acidiclight Totally agree on there should be one package format and apps should be packaged by developer. Otherwise telling people that package managers are easier is just lying. The second you need an app that isn't in default repository (or it is, but not the latest version that has a feature you really want and used to use on windows, in case of someone trying to move to linux), even GUI package manager becomes way harder than just going to developer's website and downloading installer.

I don't understand, all this 7 or 10 or 11 was good, Windows haven't been good in like 20 years, you could run XP like it was XFCE.

Windows 7 fixed many of the problems Vista had at launch, introduced D3D11, had Windows XP mode for the people who needed it (if you were on a high enough edition), and was just overall a more polished version of Vista. It was great. It was also the last version of Windows to have an *actual* high contrast theme and the Windows Classic theme engine. It by no means shadows XP, XP was legendary, but 7 was absolutely high up there.

Windows 10 is same crap as Linux if we compare them with Windows 11. Windows 11 is the most beautiful OS which is ever released. Windows 11 + WSL2 + Win Terminal + Dev Drive is the all what you need for development, MS is definitely give more attention to developers now.
