It's unconscionable for MS to force tens (or hundreds) of millions of computer owners to replace perfectly good hardware just to get security for their OS. My computers are plenty fast and have plenty of RAM and storage to meet my needs for years to come if I don't have a hardware failure.

We are all sick of unwanted Windows updates that break our computers. My current computer's Outlook email quit working after an update. It's a shame that we may see e-waste landfills in open land spaces near cities like Dallas, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and San Diego, creating a hazardous air quality situation for such populated areas. There's a good reason I tell my parents NOT to throw out the computers, because you can easily use them for other purposes. The 2005 movie "Robots" inspired me to think about using whatever you have leftover to create something new out of old parts and items no longer used in society. As for computers, if my laptop ever dies, I'm not giving it away, I'm holding onto it until the day I lose it and then it gets thrown out by someone else. For me, the types of motherboards, CPUs, GPUs, hard drives, solid state drives, etc. can be repurposed for other uses outside of electronics. So even IF, Windows/Microsoft ever does this, I wouldn't be surprised if I move over to Linux instead of Windows 11.

I have understood the problem of recycling old computers for decades. They are shipped to poor countries where disadvantaged people try to extract rare metals, while polluting the environment and their own bodies. I've resurrected numerous personal computers abandoned by friends and those abandoned anonymously on the street. I would give these away for free to those who couldn't afford to purchase a computer. If the computer hada licensed OS, I would reinstall a fresh copy. For the others, I would install a version of LINUX, with a GUI resembling Windows or MacOS. I even offered to teach them how to use the computer. Unfortunately few were given a new home because people demanded the newest version of Windows or MacOS for free, and I was unwilling to install pirated software.. I now have filled my apartment with working machines I can't give away. I can't make myself to "recycle" them while knowing their harm to the environment. Some of the towers make decent bookcases, but I prefer natural wood. I wish I had a solution. What I can do is to condemn companies like Apple whose computers cannot be upgraded. They can't even be serviced after a mere three years of service.

MS and all the big PC manufacturers should be fined $millions each for helping tackle the e-waste as they are the causes of all the e-waste. I have been recycling PC's and old Laptops and Tablet / mobile devices for past 15 - 20 years. Some of the metals like lithium and cadmium are very toxic to the earth long term. It is good to see someone covering all this e-waste, very good vlog, thank you.

Forget millions, let's fine them trillions and trillions of dollars, the same amount as the USDebtClock for nearly 50 trillion dollars, and see if the companies have enough money to spend 50 trillion dollars towards the people for their misuse if their consumer base.

I have a Steam Deck and am replacing it with an ROG ally x for visual accessibility reasons. My Steam Deck will be going to a friend of mine. I hold onto my devices as long as I possibly can. For instance I’ve had an old iMac for 10 years that now runs Linux, and I do recycle whenever I can. Our area has a yearly tech recycling event near our university and we always take advantage of that. The only time I will replace a system, unless there is a hardware accessibility feature I could really make use of (e.g. a bigger screen and USB C on a new iPhone to help work travel be a little easier), the only time I’ll replace is when the system really struggles. We kept a 486 from DOS All the way through Windows 95, then recycled it.

The problem is even worse for smartphones. Apple iphones last a bit longer than Android. But updates to operating systems on BOTH platforms make ALL smartphones pretty much unusable after only a few years. The way apps are handled on BOTH platforms make it virtually impossible to use a smartphone older than 3 or 4 years. Because the app stores for both platforms generally don't allow you to purchase an older version of an app. And the newer versions don't work on the older phone. It's a model that forces people to throw away older (but perfectly serviceable) phones. And it's a tragedy.

While I think we should all be talking and doing something about e-waste, I not sure MS is the bully here. I have an HP from 2010 and Dell Lattitude from 2014, they both are near the end of their usefulness. The HP is now strictly an offline legacy encoder, with the Dell allows for monitoring security cameras and web browsing. The real culprit is the consumer who has to own the latest device, despite the older one working just fine. I still use my 2013 Samsung 4S mini smartphone as an audio player in the garage, almost all these phones are in a dump somewhere. While companies need to make their products easier to repair and recycle, the consumer needs to stop impulse every new model that comes out.
@D.von.NКүн бұрын
Nobody else commented here yet? So let me add: recycling is largely as bad, if not worse, as throwing it to the landfill. There is a documentary on youtube, about 45 min long, about how bad this 'recycling' of e-waste is. What does this re-cycling look like, actually? Whole machines, or their components after taking them apart, are sent in bulks to the developing world. That documentary was in some poor African country. What they can sell as a working machine, they will, using Linux then on. Components like wires are burned on a pile, releasing super toxic fumes that poison entire communities and environment, for a few kg of copper or other metals. Minimum PPE, if any. Children are stillborn or born with deformities, adults have a short lifespan and cancers along othe health issues. And those people are still vey poor that only a few can afford the computer from a dumpster. At most the'll have mobile phones instead. Smaller, cheaper and more practicable.

You're spot on. I don't know anything about Linux and what I've seen about its use doesn't seem very user-friendly.
@SirWolf2018Күн бұрын
Actually, you might find it more user friendly than Windows. And that is because Windows has grown to become an abomination of complexity, useless features, and a lot of things. Linux however, has only been getting better in the user friendliness department. It has its flaws though, and you will find yourself needing to look up information about things that don't work out of the box, but I'm pretty sure Windows is more complex nowadays than Linux. Try Linux Mint for example. It's a good start for a conservative Windows-like environment.
@D.von.NКүн бұрын
Try Mint Cinnamon. And don't confuse 'familiar' with 'friendly'. Many going from Win10 to Win11 had to learn new ways, too. My security updates issue on Win10 this year was very user unfriendly and I had to extend a recovery partition, a very risky procedure no standard user like me should need doing. Later on I had to manually clear updates cache, or I couldn't install further Win10 updates... AI was a great help with that. Now running Linux with Win11 in a virtual machine like if I got a degree in computing, which I don't have. Heading towards 50, female, no computing background. You can do it too.

*The situation is bad. The governments of the world should put pressure on Microsoft & Apple etc* At minimum - they should fine these companies for forcing consumers into buying new equipment & devices. At the same time - governments could incentivize companies into providing information regarding the use of Linux. That 'Carrot & Stick' approach will mean a reduction in the amount of e-Waste as well helping consumers by offering choice.

There are so many reasons to boycott Microsoft entirely and use Linux, this is one of the many reasons. The most technically challenging part of installing Linux is creating and booting a live installer from a USB stick, which is also the first step to installing Windows 11. If a person has never installed an OS themselves and doesn't feel comfortable doing so, it would take all of 15 minutes to setup Kubuntu or something similar with some help from a friend or a relative. There are zero reasons for people to still be running Windows in recent years, I don't understand how they still have hundreds of millions of users and a monopoly, it makes no sense to me but it's one of the reasons that I had to give up on an IT career.

I'm from germany and I fix on thrown away PCs as a hobby, then sell them more or less at cost. As much as I despise Microsoft for various reasons, ultimatively the population is to blame IMO. Weither it's americans, germans, brits or whatever, every country is doing it's best to turn it's population into professional consumers. Fast Fashion? Lots of clothing from Shein, Amazon and Temu is so fast it gets shipped around the globe to get the cheapest possible production costs, then shipped to the customer, then send back to be destroyed, as the logistics for checking/washing would cost more than the "efficient" production. Cars? People got brainwashed to the point they think 3Ton EVs would save the planet, with graphs so biased even a gradeschooler should be able to call BS on them. All kinds of electronic devices have gone from decades of lifetime to "just past the warranty, maybe". But who cares, the new models look cooler anyway. To be clear: I don't blame people for not being PC "Experts". But Microsoft and others will always take advantage of uneducated consumerism and the more it works, the worse it'll get. I could be happy whenever I save a good device from getting scrapped, but it's getting to the point where it's just insane. A while ago, I even fished a working HP Pavillion with a Ryzen 5 5600G and a 1TB NVME drive out of the e-waste bin, about a week before I found a working 1060 6GB. As far as phones go, I'm completely puzzled how normal people with normal jobs can go for the latest iPhone, Galaxy etc. I wouldn't even feel comfortable carrying around a fragile device worth hundreds all the time.

I really can't see the reason why Windows 11 can not run on 6th and 7th Gen Intel. They have TPM 2.0, they have Secure Boot, they have SSE4.2. Allowing them to be on the supported list would make a huge dent in the e-waste problem. Unless this is still a Spectre and Meltdown issue, but I don't think that it is Microsoft's place to take away the users choice to accept the risk.

This is not a new problem or particular to Microsoft. In general electronics have always been disposable except for radios that work the same as 50 or 70 years ago. The big problem here is people who bought laptops that never or rarely leave home. Add to that those that could upgrade just the motherboard, CPU & RAM but will dump the whole PC & buy a new one. As mentioned towards the end of the video this whole " upgrade -itis" is prevalent with mobile/cell phones with 2 or 3 year plans stating you can still upgrade your phone after 1 year. Then there is the situation with smart TV's: people want a bigger & bigger screen & in the UK within the next 5 years they are turning off the aerial signal, so no internet connection on the TV then no TV. So much e-waste ends up shipped to Asia to be "recycled" by toxic methods that pollute the environment.
@alexbalex72992 күн бұрын
So here’s a couple of things and I’m sure I’ve said this before. There are a couple of ways we can solve this problem. We have a new incoming administration that wants to do budget cuts to government spending waste spending. One of the things they could do, is require Microsoft to get rid of the system requirements to allow windows 11 to work on these 200,000,000+ PCs. Yes I know some of the machine machines that may not work cause they’re just too old. I get that. But for the millions of machines that do work, this executive order or acting in Congress could say hey look, government employees can use these laptops And they’re not gonna necessarily use them for their personal computers, but they will get the job done that the government would require. So you are hereby banned from system requirements that lock our workers out. We want to cut spending so why not combine cutting spending with telling Microsoft that for government, computers and other computers, that we Require them to do away with some of these requirements. Congress could say hey look he waste, not good. So we’re not gonna appropriate money for our employees to keep getting new computers so here why Microsoft you are here by prohibited from putting in all these requirements. Also, the European Union could step in. After all, they stepped in and said hey USB-C on smart phones. And other things so why not with waste the same thing put some regulation in there. This is a good opportunity for everybody to get something what they want. Microsoft get more windows 11 users, And the government can get these computers to use so that their employees can keep working and then they don’t have to buy the remaining million machines they can hold onto that money for a little while longer a couple more years and do that. Everyone will get what they want here. Also, when you talk about computers that you’ve put together and change parts out of what and sold them for low income people as a blind user, I don’t have a job right now and it’s hard for blind people to get jobs. There is a place called computers for the blind in the Dallas Metropolitan area. A lot of those computers are windows, professional computers, and their business laptops. I don’t know where they come from maybe from some government agencies maybe from other businesses they donate their laptops and the laptops get looked over and the laptops get built for what a blind person would need in those laptops. So,, a lot of those computer computers that they have sold, where Windows 10 based computers, and they couldn’t guarantee, that they would work with Windows 11 if you paid a little bit more, you could get a machine that is guaranteed to run Windows 11. I’m surprised that computers for the blind would still sell windows 10 computers that may not be able to run win 11. Also, they don’t talk about the system requirements and how to get around them. They assume that most of the blind people that they serve, don’t know how to use a computer. But I do know how to use a computer so I would urge them to put a document talking about how to use Rufus or some ways of bypassing the system requirements so that these blind people can use their computers much longer. those computers can be anywhere from $200-$300 and they’re good computers. Like for example, a laptop elite book. That’s the kind of machines they give or Dell latitudes. They don’t give you no Inspiron the machines are actually pretty good. They’re sturdy, and their business laptops. so why not, put an article on computers for the blind website on how to bypass the requirements put a link to the Rufus program and instructions for how to do it. But no, they can’t do that. Because a lot of their clientele probably wouldn’t be able to manage that. I’ve done it. And I’ve had no issues with it. That’s why I’m gonna be able to use my machines longer. anyway, that’s my comment on this.

I don’t think W11 will have a huge impact on e-waste… proof is the low W11 market share. People just refuse to move to W11… and certainly will not buy a new PC just to have W11. E-waste is a huge problem… but I don’t think W11 is much of a factor. The unending march of technology is the reason… and MS really can’t be blamed for this. The bottom line, people want software that has more and faster features… which need more RAM and faster processors. Criminals keep getting smarter which requires better countermeasures… like TPM 2.0. Government should require all manufacturers to be responsible for recycling their products. If manufacturers would bear the cost of recycling, you would see manufacturing techniques aimed at reducing e-waste and the cost of recycling. PCs should / could be easily upgradeable and last a minimum of 20 years before needing a full replacement. It could / would be done if the cost of recycling was on the backs of manufacturers. I’d bet any roadblocks against such regulations would be the consumer… mostly. We just love to have the latest and greatest.. whether we need it or not. This is the reality MS and other manufacturers life in… and the reason they do what they do. We live in a throw away culture, not because of Microsoft, in fact, Microsoft exists as they are because of the culture they must service.

Keep the PC and switch to Linux. Mint is a good choice.

Which is why Linux is my daily working computer and you DON'T have to be a geek to use Linux, it's actually the complete opposite. Try to at least pretend to be a techie some of the time.

so why not keep your 'old' machine and use linux? if you *really care* about the environment-

cause no one knows Linux exists and no one wants it

Not all computers have to become e-waste. Although you criticise Linux, some people will install it. Additionally, the computers could used for media or PLEX servers. How being positive creating a video on how to continue using old computers? You going on and on that 99% of people won't reuse their computers is being doom and gloom. Give people a chance. Stop being so negative. Mac computers are NOT worse stop this nonsense unless you can PROVE Mac computers are so bad. prove it .

ROFLOL do you have no memory? This has happened to different degrees through the years. My 95/98 couldn't quite do XP then XP hardware could not do Windows 7 then 10 was a little easier and now 11. You are pissing in the wind my friend.

no, in the times of Windows 95, 98 and XP There were a lot less PCs ... yes it was still ewaste...but not to the 250 million PC ewaste. It was very small numbers compared to today

@@WCT Well the waste did not just start, that is not right it has been terrible for quite awhile. Some places take them and say they are recycling them but most of the product ends up being burned and polluting the area it is improperly burned in like in India for example.

@@WCT Oh and double check that more pcs now bit because many folks who would have had pcs when I was younger do not have them now, they just use their phones lol. Cellphone waste is an issue too.

Sorry to be “that annoying guy” that mentions Linux, but it just needs to be shouted from the rooftop that probably 80% of this projected so-called e-waste could run the Linux system with few or no problems at all. Yeah I get it, nobody “knows” about Linux or is not interested because they can’t run their crappy Outlook or 365 apps. But this whole instant EOL of hardware just for a few bs software changes is both appalling and horrifying. A functioning, non corrupt government would simply not allow this to happen.
