The LCD on the NAS is really nice for status at a glance. I use TrueNAS (Formally FreeNAS) and that is a really nice feature to just glance at it and see if its happy. But yeah, it definitely had that late 90-00’s mini stereo vibe to it with the inverted blue lcd.

The old Bios based method of booting a computer couldn't boot a partition larger than 2TB. The newer UEFI booting protocol can boot much bigger drives.

@@darkm007 It's not an OS limitation. Infact if you could boot a set OS using a UEFI bootloader. Then yes, you could give it's main drive a size that's bigger than 2 TB. It's more a software limitation with the Bios of your motherboard. One that's thankfully since been fixed with the move to UEFI based bioses.

nice video! Btw, better way of sorting files and folders is to use "00_name", "01_name" etc up till like "10_name" (also with the underscore). That way it's being sorted well no matter what system you're using.

12:28 - For it to show in order on Windows 98, you would have to rename 1, 2, 3, etc to 01, 02, 03, etc (yes, with a 0 at the front, then it will be in order). Every number must be two digits like 11, 12, and 13 are two digits. Windows 98 expects every file name starting with numbers to have the same numbers of digits equally for it to be sorted in order.

When using artwork for the old Windows flag make sure it’s the Windows 95 Wingdings font version because sizes of the red and blue squares at the tail of the flag different. Only the Windows 3.1 boot screen flag has tail squares the same size which looks weird when rotated sideways.

I fought so much with getting 98, 95, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, etc. to read from network shares (particularly on a Debian VM that I set up), and I realized that instead of enabling anonymous access, I probably could have run smbpasswd and created user accounts to match my username. I'll have to try that next time I set everything up.

FYI: the required update provides the NTLMv2 protocol support for Windows 98. SAMBA can be configured in native Windows 9x mode, but it seems not implemented in the GUI.

Regarding the 1.96tb limit, it somehow also registers that there's nothing on the drive itself, so my theory is that you can put as much storage on in (more than 1.96tb) and still have it read and copy files from a Windows 98 PC utill the real limit is reached. (also, the 1.96tb counter would start to decrease when there is really 1.96tb left, and would start to track how much of that 1.96tb has been taken).

Exactly. The only time you might run into an issue is if you try to copy over 2TB in one operation, then a disk space check could fail. But IIRC Win98 doesn't do a preliminary space check, it just copies as much as it can and only gives an error when writes start to fail.

I ran into the same issue as you with mounting the network drive. In my case, I found that I could use the Map Network Drive feature that you can access by right clicking My Computer and that would bypass the password requirements, curiously.

RAID5 is 4 disks with striping at block level and distributed parity (fault tolerance 1 disk). so the logical volume will extend to up to three time the smallest drive. I actually expected to see SMB1 as default protocol for Windows 98, but nonetheless, this seems to be working well.

The other day, I actually found on the side of the road, a few laptops being thrown out. One that I fixed up is an HP Pavilion g7, seems to be from 2011. However, the oldest out of them all and also what seems to be in the best physical condition is actually an IBM Thinkpad G40 laptop with a Pentium 4 cpu. I looked up the model and this IBM laptop seems to be from January of 2004. I don't have the AC adapter which I have one on the way, but shortly, I should be able to test it and soon I'll do a video about it. Maybe this IBM laptop that I found may be old enough to support Windows 98.

That's pretty cool! If the machine runs Linux, can it run third-party apps on the terminal? There is an Apple protocol called AFP, launched between 1988 and 1990, this protocol still exists today, it was removed in Big Sur (I think it now uses only SMB). And there is software for Linux used to create these AFP servers called Netatalk. I use it with a Raspberry Pi on a 1995 Mac (but it could be a 1988 Mac), on the same network as Windows 10. That would be an even more incredible way to expand the possibilities of connections. Thanks for the great content.

I actually had a network set up such that my Packard-Bell (running Windows 98) could see an 8TB external hard drive attached to my main computer and access it as if it were a normal network drive. There was basically no problem there.

I have found that it's best to name files that start in order to 01, 02, etc. so they fall right in line other 2 digit numbers. Or 001, 002 for 3 digit numbers, etc. Works out a treat fot making it easier to organize and find them.

Also, please do put >2TB of data on the NAS and see how Win98 reacts, I'd love to see that. My guess: As you fill up the NAS, the "used space" indicator in Win98 will stay the same until you get down to the last 2TB. For example, if you put 8TB of data on it, Win98 will still say 0 bytes used (notice how it says that now even with everything you already have on it) and let you keep adding data to it. With regards to the username issue when connecting to the NAS, wouldn't the NET USE command be useful in this situation? It should allow you to map a drive letter to a share, and supply a different username at the same time.

What I do for this is zero pad my collections, but this is definately a pain for large collections (> 99 items), but it's always something to consider, so 98 can handle 01 and 10 correctly, but not 1 and 10. Ditto, ironically, with Google's drive fs interface (which is why I learned this and don't know why it does it that way, it might be a configuration item you can tweak in drive fs that I haven't found yet.)

The account access issue seems like a NAS configuration issue. You probably need to enable guest access on the NAS for SMB. If there's no explicit option for that you can try adding a user with name "Guest" and an empty password, which is what I think Windows is likely trying to check guest access. But I would think there should be an option to just let anyone into the SMB share. Also it's worth noting that you can add network shares to My Computer without having to use a network drive letter (there's a separate explorer tool for it) so you don't need to use up drive letters... or you can just create a shortcut anywhere. Mapping a network drive letter is a legacy thing from the Windows for Workgroup days for DOS networking support and since then nobody has seemingly bothered to learn that there are other ways to create shortcuts to network drives. Don't annoy your coworkers at work by telling them where on the O:\ drive your document is, without realizing they don't have the same network drive mappings as you. With a shortcut or a non--drive mapping you can get the real path instead.

Just to let you know, you can create dummy files of arbitrary sizes in windows simply by using the command "fsutil file createnew (filename) (length in bytes)" I've used this a couple times for cloud storage services that give free extra storage if you store so much data with them of a certain type that week. So I've uploaded an 8GB .jpeg to make them think I uploaded a ton of pictures. And since it's all dummy data, it compresses SUPER well so it only took about 10 seconds to upload the whole file to the cloud.

there is a patch we used time ago in linux to map the net drives in our company, you have to edit the .smb file and put "@" on the top of the users names, that usually fix the problem with mapping net drives, youcan also use the netuse protocol on cmd, excuse me for my english..

You could use dd to write blocks of bytes near instantly. IIRC, you don't even have to actually write the bytes with dd, you can actually just allocate the space on the disk *as if you had written* the bytes.

I'd definitely like to see how it can run Virtualbox. If I could run multiple operating systems on the same machine and use the NAS to backup snapshots of these VMs I wouldn't have to go through the currently rather cumbersome backup procedure I have. I suppose I'd still have to backup individual PCs, but if I didn't use them as much as I do now I wouldn't have to spend so much time maintaining them.

After this I think the ultimate feat regarding windows 98 installations would be to simply install it on a modern hard drive or SSD. And by that I mean, the internal processors and memory of the Disk drive itself shall run Windows 98 as standalone with only a monitor attached. I’m not sure what kind of CPUs a modern HDD is using these days, but it would be an amazing feat to see an HDD run an entire OS on it’s own. Make it happen!
