For aero, you have to run the aero program from D:\aero\aero\aero.exe for it to work. If you want it to start whenever you start windows, just put a shortcut in the startup folder. That’s what worked for me when I tried it. (It doesn’t make the taskbar aero for the default theme, but the windows are aero) Edit: (“D:\” being the setup disc)

I know this isn't directly related to this video, but I thought I would share this idea that popped into my head. One of the biggest issues with running legacy operating systems like Windows XP is getting a web browser that is still supported. We have Pale Moon, which is still available for Windows XP via an unofficial fork. However, there's nothing that's truly up-to-date any more. Now, there are streaming services for games which people can use on thin clients or low-powered hardware. Wouldn't it be cool if there was an online service where you open up an application that launches a new browser instance on a server somewhere, with your browser of choice fully up-to-date? Even better, if the service connected from your PC through a VPN and none of the browsing data was saved by the service provider, providing an anonymous browsing experience. I don't know, just thought this would be cool and a way of keeping legacy hardware and software relevant and usable. Windows XP is great for running older applications, legacy software, etc and is, personally, the best version of Windows created. I use Linux now and plan to build a Windows XP machine with XP-era hardware. Still, if anyone has the knowledge to make a service like this, or knows of one that currently exists, please let me know. :) Love you guys, tech enthusiasts are the best. Take care!

It's a cool idea, I use the Shadow service which runs a full scale computer on a server, and streams the video back to my computer. It means I can play high end PC games on my own computer, even though my computer is sub-par, via streaming. The only problem is you would need a decent Internet connection, and a low latency connection as well (ping). That means people running these legacy OS's most likely don't have the quickest Internet ever, meaning streaming a browser application could be troublesome. It also means it would have to be hosted on a server farm somewhere, which would be expensive to set up. It's a great idea though, and I love the anonymity aspect of it, but sadly if you're going to be streaming an application, you might as well just stream an entire PC, otherwise it's just not practical. It would be an interesting project though for sure

Honestly too little too late. XP's only supported edition, posready 2009, is about to end support. That and many programs have already dropped xp. Alky is a meme, it doesn't actually allow you to run most Vista+ apps, only those that were locked down from running on xp. The only viable solution is a wine style subsystem, but you might as well just use Linux then.

Opening Opera while the OS is installing is actually a nice "feature". It means you have something to do while waiting for it to install. I'm actually surprised it even opens in that environment though.

It obviously means that the OS is installed and the 'account setup' is happening during that time. Like as if a script was running things like 'install this', 'install that', ... and since it's not done like a silent installer, that's why you can see it.

A feature I love about longhorn is the fading effect the buttons have. Nobody seems to talk about it but it looks cool when you open the calculator and move your mouse all over the buttons. Works better with Plex theme.

Looking at this takes me back to 2007-2008. I was still rocking Windows XP and used to customize the heck out of it. There are still transformation packs floating around on deviantart for XP. I used programs like True Transparency (for an Aero effect), Ave Glass Toast, Alky, ViStart (before Classic Shell was a thing), ViGlance (which provides jump lists, previews and such), Vista Drive Icon. Also, along with third party themes, sounds and whatnot. The actual Vista sidebar was ported over to XP and Windows 7. There was also a third party program for the Aero Flip 3D effect, called WinFlip--it was a bit buggy. There are some mods out there for the clock/calendar as well sound mixer to make it more like Vista/7. I have to do wonder if they'll try and implement DX10. That was ported over to XP around 2009.

If you were running Windows XP-C on a virtual machine such as virtualbox, install the additions software and make sure to tick direct3D and to read through the popups. If done correctly, windows aero should work again.

You didn't show off that "Alky for Applications" thing, that sounded interesting being able to run Vista applications on XP (I suppose that's how the Sidebar is there), you should have tested a few Vista applications like the Vista built in games and Snipping Tool. Maybe that's for another vid? :)

I'm not saying you have to make that video, what I mean is that I find it quite interesting that someone managed to get NT6 apps running on NT5, as I remember hearing this used to be quite a challenge to work out (hence why ReactOS attempts to emulate Server 2003 instead of Vista or 7)

If you do ever make a full video, I recommend doing the Vista/7 built-in software and games (like the Win7 version of MSPaint, all the Vista games, Snipping Tool, Sticky Notes, etc) and also some third party software that requires Vista and later, such as some newer versions of Firefox and Chrome.

*3683. Yeah, good idea, but customizing Longhorn build is pretty hard. You need a piece of software that is very hard to find (but I don't remember name of it) for specified build. EDIT: But 3683 may work with nLite actually, because it didn't use Longhorn PE

So... the project fell apart, and progress on it has basically halted. It's a damn shame too, as we had just gotten our hands on Windows Sever 2003 x64 and were gonna make XP-C-64 but it sadly never came to pass. Download Windows XP Black & Blue Vista VG. Its an self-installing XP Pro with Vista patchers and many related Vista stuff. The Theme Aero can slow you down on slower computers. I don't like bundled programs and don't use themes. I prefer to install programs myself in the folder where i want - i don't use the default program files folder. I have a separate partition for programs. Also, i have the full version of WinRar. I'll definitely install alky though to be able to run vista/7 programs and try the sidebar.

Wait a second.. This project wants to backfuse Windows XP with Windows Vista? What if I told you, Vista is just Windows XP/Windows Server 2003 with a paintjob? No kidding, Vista runs on a Windows Server 2003 kernel . This project makes no fucking sense. Take a standard Windows XP Prof and a Vista conversion pack, boom. 100% Same result, but this version does that for you using the same tools. Oh, and WinFS ON WINDOWS XP makes no sense either. Not even Microsoft could grasp what to do with it, so it was cancelled. Unless you want to see or sort all the pictures in your porn folder by ISO exposure and EXIF tag, this may be the tool for you. But the standard windows XP search can do that anyway. search "*.jpg;*.png", right-click on the details bar, enable "exposure" and click it to sort ascending or descending. You may need the hated "indexing service" enabled, which for some reason no one complains about in WIndows 10, lol.
