Because people started installing windows on a non microsoft dos operating system so to stop thay they need to add code which made windows only compatible with MS DOS but now Windows (after windows xp)is the actual operating system and it is built on windows NT this is way different than windows pre xp era Think of windows before xp era as the one ui of Samsung One UI is not an operating system it is a user interface that runs on android replacing the stock android user interface on Samsung phones. Samsung even had one of there user interfaces run on another os other than android which was touch wiz 1.0 which ran on thier android flagship galaxy s1 and bada os based galaxy wave. For anyone who dont know what is one ui or touch wiz They are the user interfaces samsung made for thier smartphones List of Samsung user interfaces that they created for thier phones/tablets One UI (galaxy s10/note 10 - present) Samsung Experience (S8/ Note 8 - S9/ Note 9) Touchwiz (S7/ Note 7 and earlier) And sometimes they included vanilla android (stock android) in special versions of thier phones like the Galaxy s4 Google Play Edition and on smartphones that Google and Samsung created in partenrship like the Galaxy Nexus.

Back when I worked in publishing, we had a flatbed inkjet printer that ran on software that required WinXP. We could get updated software for free, but it only supported newer versions of the inkjet system. That cost was $20k. Since the company wouldn't pay for that, we ended up having to take it off the company network and just upload the print files via USB drive. The IT department physically disabled the network card just to make sure no one could connect it to the network. Ironically, it was one of the few company computers that employees didn't manage to infect with some kind of virus or malware.

Not every new thing is better and the old has to be thrown away and forgotten (I've seen this bullshit everywhere, it's so fucking annoying). 3. Not everybody LIKES Windows 10. 4. All these "tech savvy" people and companies promote scarmongering/fearmongering because of the fact that they think every new thing is better and the old has to be thrown away and forgotten. (like what I listed in #2). 5. Not everything has to be upgraded, COMPATIBILITY has to be checked first along with if the system will do the job without doing some BS forced update. On top of all that, telling people that they need to upgrade because it's better, is like telling people that they need to do crime because it's "so new and better than living normal life".

Thing is, Windows XP actually got an update even after it was discontinued. During the Wannacry attacks, things have gotten so bad that Microsoft was *forced* to release an emergency update for XP. That could possibly mean that yes, there could be legal issues with this leak.

A lot of the Windows XP code base is in Windows Server 2003. However, the directions to compile a complete version of Server 2003 exists but since the XP source code is incomplete, you can compile it but it may or may not work. This means that Microsoft, rather than reinvent the wheel in every windows version, has been using the same code base since XP. The source to XP and Win2K Server is definitely interesting to learn! Just a FYI, the compile time for Server 2003 takes up a very very long time!

Windows 2000 split into Windows server 2003 and windows XP. The windows XP branch is actually a dead end as continuing onto windows longhorn, the codebase for XP became unstable. Windows server 2003 however, unlike xp, had a focus on stability and eventually became the predecessor to all modern versions of windows.

I still use Win XP simply because a lot of my old programs refuse to run on Windows 10. Of course, it stays offline. Specifically, I absolutely love the old Microsoft Paint as opposed to the new one. There is features in there that I used on a regular basis that simply is not in the new version.

If you are talking about 3D paint I totally agree. Why they didn't just update it to maybe have a few more features like layers is beyond me. I've always wanted something built in with a little more oomph than paint but a little more light weight than gimp or Photoshop.

I learned a little trick with Windows 10. If you load it on a machine with less than 4GB RAM, it installs a 32bit version and may surprise you that it will run your old software. Then again, it won't run everything.

There's a photo studio in my area they uses Windows XP on their PC without any internet connection on it. And they use a very older version of Adobe Photoshop to edit photos. When I asked them about why they are not upgrading they said they couldn't cope up with newer versions so they'll stick to the older versions and that works for them.

The fact that the Dinks have lax copyright laws is exactly why China has developed so quickly. The fledgling US pretty much did the same thing in the late 1700s to 1800s - it infringed on the patents of the established European powers of the day, prompting those European powers to complain about the US stealing tech in the same way China gets accused today.

Windows is so mindbogglingly extensive it's insane. The fact that there is so much code, so much to understand. 45 million lines of code, and no one singular person knows and understands all of it. Absolutely insane how many people take Windows for granted when its whole codebase is literally unlearnable in a single human's lifespan. I mean, it took Terry Davis over a decade just to make Temple OS what it is. And that's Temple OS, compare it to Windows and you really just have to take a step back and admire it as the work of art that it is. Genuinely so fortunate to be alive in such an incredible time.

My biochemistry lab uses an IR instrument that can only run on Windows XP. Another lab on the same floor uses an NMR instrument that can only run on Windows 95. These instruments literally cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to replace, and in some cases they can’t be replaced at all (i.e., if that specific model is no longer manufactured), so we’re just kinda forced to keep them around.

I think the “leak” was intended to create artificial securities issues in old OS products (by Microsoft itself). That way Microsoft can claim, the best way to be protected against any threat is to “migrate” to Windows 10 S MODE, a convenient mode where all of the previous programs/software (product-one purchase) are NOT compatible, but the new system allows programs/software (services-an eternal cyclical fee) is the new standard to collect cyclical profits from the store app.

It won't. When Windows 2000 leaked, the Wine developers and ReactOS developers went out of their way to make sure any of that code does not end up there. Because if you look at the code and it even influences your own code, that's still copyright infringement and you can be sued by Microsoft. Wine and ReactOS went by their etho of clean room reverse engineering and using documentation

Project that could really benefit from the leak probably the KernelEx. A fork of KernelEx can be made to includes its own rendition of lots of winXP/2003 APIs, as many of such APIs currently only exists in stub form (exist but didn't do what it supposed to perform) or didn't exist at all in current KernelEx. That fork could be end up in murky legalities tho..

My chiropractor's office just upgraded their computers to Windows 10 about a month or two ago. When I worked in a pharmacy, they upgraded the XP machines to Windows 7 at the end of 2015/beginning of 2016. Of all the industries that need the most secure computer systems, you'd think healthcare would be top of the list!

number of reson´s companys have not upgraded from Xp is 1. "System running on it is the last version or developer is not alive anymore and no one knows about the code for the systems, happends very often in heavy industries, 2. replacing the system running on XP is to expensive, 3. replacing XP is to expensive due to number 2.

I have an off topic question. On the Windows desktop, you can click and hold the left mouse button. When you click and hold then drag the cursor you can see a box show up on the desktop. But as soon as you release the mouse button it disappears. I have seen it for years. I have no idea what it is or what it means. Maybe you have some insight.

It's tricky to compile the sources. You must have the correct toolchain and build environment. Otherwise it won't compile anything. You get thousands of errors.

Did anyone mention that Intel still uses embedded XP to control their testing rigs? (Just as a controller, not to use the OS itself.) XP SP1 was also the last version of windows to support several graphics programs and drivers such as Matrox;s. Sp2 and SP3 broke that..
