Windsurfing at Hookipa / Maui / First swell after a lake-flat summer

For windsurfer and surfers, fall is the time of big waves on the Hawaiian north facing beaches. Summer’s often lake-flat for weeks, then with the seeming flip of a switch the surf can quite literally go from a pancake to 20 feet. This is what happened here at Hookipa Beach, Maui the last few days. The best windsurfers in the world arrived to prepare for the Aloha Classic and the conditions were promising after a fast start last week.

What looks quite shocking is how actually unpopular is windsurfing at Hookipa ! Many even relatively obscure spots in Europe have a lot more windsurfers.

Hello, how are you? I recorded the video about a month after the Lahaina fire. There were almost no tourists there at that time. At times there were only 5 to 10 windsurfers in the water in Hookipa. It was also quite early and the conditions with little wind and waves up to logo to mast-high were definitely not for everyone. First you have to get past the Rocks to reach the chanel to get out and this can be very tricky. In such conditions there are many more windsurfers in Kanaha. In any case, Hookipa is still the best windsurfing spot in the world. Take care and hope to meet you in Hookipa one day!

Wow! a RRD Hardcore wave 78 from 2015...I had it too...and never thought to see it at Hookipa!! The board on the rocks looks like a RRd too🙈
