(not so much Jordan) since he ended his season early due to a knee injury. In 03 Jordan had already announced his retirement before the end of the season, so the league was not caught in the will they won't they escapade like with Lebron and Tom Brady. The storyline was can the Lakers do what even the bulls couldn't and win 4 in a row. I think because a "storied" franchise like the lakers with two mega stars were competing for and winning titles at that time, the media didn't have to rely on Jordan to keep people engaged. They also didn't have to worry about clicks, and online views, just ratings on TV. So it made it a little easier in that regard to not rely on Jordan for views/ratings. Now if you're talking about Jordan's last year with the Bulls, yes that was there. BUT, Jordan and the bulls were also still playing through the end of the playoffs, so that is a little bit different.

If LBJ wants to win another chip without taking significant pay-cut, he should at least consider OKC. I don't think he wants to go there, but that's one team that is good and has cap space.
