Yes some great notes - and with all due respect. Nice to see the wine education world getting along so well. My wife and daughter bought me this book for Christmas and it really catapulted my understanding of the different varietals and wine regions. I’ve enjoyed wine for decades and have read many books over those years, but nothing so comprehensive - and fun to read as the magnum edition.

This is great information on these two books. Sometimes it is challenging to find enough information on the Old World as is done on the New World and that may be due to the origin of the Authors. Love Madeline's Info graphs though and how she simplifies descriptions.

I decided want to get these books and add to my library. Your review was very comprehensive and leet me know how to use each book. Definitely want the first one for the aroma wheels...spend more timid on those. Afro the second one, I am interested in the food pairings and maps. Hi Gregory. Well, there's always the World Atlas of Wine by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson that's a great reference book for maps and some explanations. the Oxford companion to wine is a staple wine book too. I loved Emile Peynaud's 'The Taste of Wine' even thought it's been written a long time ago, but the guy was such a pioneer. Then for wine education books for starters, I honestly haven't investigate them in details to recommend them. I've been in wine for so long, when i by a wine book it's one that is more specialized about a specific topic or region. haven't really read a general wine book in decades. I started with the few I mentioned there, and then dug into more specific topics in more details when needed, especially for the WSET Diploma. i quite like Tom Stevenson's Champagne & Sparkling wine as a reference on those. Jancis I think has a great book on American wine. There's loads of great books on different countries too. Sorry I can't be all that much more helpful :-) Then of course, watch my channel(LOL), we're going to cover everything :-) (over time, it'll take a little while but we'll get there :-) Take care man, tx for stopping by 🥂👍😊

Hi Katya. Thank you very much for your kind words. You mean between the two? I'd think reading through the Magnum Edition should give you some good basis, a few indications about what different wines are about, some basic principle for tasting, etc. I don't know about books specifically for restaurant staff, as I've never been i the hospitality industry (was a winemaker, the production side of the wine industry). The world Atlas of wine by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson is great to have a through overview of the world of wine. The introductory courses by the Course of Master Sommeliers must give some good basis as well, probably with some study material I would assume, I did WSET which is a good course as well. Hi Charlot. I haven't seen or used Le Nez du Vin in a very long time! I remember smelling it many years ago. It was nice. Yes, I think it can be a nice tool to train your nose for identifying the many aromas in nature. I remember, that some of the aroma flasks in it were a little disconcerting. It didn't seem to smell like it was saying it should. But yes overall, a nice product. Buying it or not? I'm not sure. How much does it sell for? Do you know?

@@charlotborg2285 Wow! that's very expensive! I wouldn't buy for that price, unless you have $500 to spare. I suspect those are more for wine schools that can use it across many students. Just for yourself, this sounds excessive. you can buy all sorts of spices, fresh fruits and fruit jams that would pretty much correspond to all these aromas for a fraction of the price. There's nothing better than smelling real clove, pepper, lemon or vanilla as a few examples to really find out what they smell like. What do you think?

Sorry I missed to answer earlier Freddie. I have to admit that I don't really know. There's not many wine books for beginners that make wine approachable and fun like those do, and with nice design too. I guess there must be alternatives, but I don't know them. The books I read are generally much more advanced into a particular region or style. I spend more time making wine videos that reading as well. Just had the opportunity to review those from Wine Folly, but i don't do this very often. Sorry! Cheers

As you may have seen from the webpage they do sell separately the wine aromas wheels that you said is one main reason to have the older paperback book. Would that be the only thing that if i buy those aroma wheels separately i can buy confidently the magnum edition without remorse?

Yes, I'd say so. Although, the aroma charts they sell are not grape specific. They have 1 chart for red, 1 for rosé, white and sparkling while the book has 1 chart for each grape. I guess it depends how you want to use those charts, rather use a general chart with all aromas for every wine (the charts sold separately) or if you prefer having a chart specifically for the grape you're tasting when you're tasting it. I'd say with the magnum edition that's way more complete, and the separate charts that seem pretty nice, you're fine. This way you can just have the charts in your Magnum edition and don't have to look around two different books etc. The magnum also as I said has charts for the top grapes you're more commonly tasting. But price-wise it'd be about the same. Hope this help?
