Joseph Swick is blending gewurz into his 2019 "The Natch" from Oregon, along with Pino Gris and Graciano. It is an incredible collection of NW grown grapes, worth checking out if you are interested in this grape.

Austria has a small amount growing on Gewuztraminer, Roter Traminer. But typically lower Austrian, or Kremstal Gelber traminer( Yellow Traminer) .

Yeah, Austria can be a bit of a nightmare for names for Traminer grapes. In the wine regions in Styria, for example, Gelber Traminer is a synonym for Traminer/Savagnin Blanc but in other parts of Austria it's a synonym for Gewürztraminer. Go fig, I suppose. Thanks for the comment!

There is a wine maker in South of Luxembourg that makes Gewürtztraminer!! And it is reaaaaaaly good!!!

I live in New Zealand and my favourite wine is Villa Maria Gewurztraminer (made in NZ)

If you want a unique Gewurtzraminer, Bontzu Cellars in Walla Walla has an organic and I believe an unfiltered version.

I thought that mutation only happens from black variety to white variety. ex. pinot noir to pinot blanc. its funny that mutation can happen also from white to black, ex savagnin blanc/traminer to savagnin rose. that's an interesting discovery. thank you.

I am growing Gewurztraminer for the first time. GT is one of my favorite grapes I live in the wine region now suburbs where most of grange used to come from. I got the cuttings with the intention of enjoying the grape as is but a few of my friends that do make wine are trying to convince me to make a drop. Being that I have a hotter climate is there any way to preserve the acid. Would shade cloth make a difference ?

sample and pick when they're ready (the grapes ripen the same, more or less, regardless of where they are grown; you just have the climate to be able to ripen them past their prime). prolonged use of shade cloth does weird things to plants/fruit and could make things more susceptible to rots.

I'm sorry but when I picked grapes as an teenagers at my Uncle's viniery in Alsace I picked only white skin Gewurztraminer

I know you did a winecast on wine certifications, but what do you think are the best Guilds to follow and subscribe to for up to date news and development materials. I currently subscribed to Guildsomm and I am thinking about WinescholarGuild also.

I think both of those are very good. Their videos are attractive and contain good information. Guildsomm also has a good podcast. The Society of Wine Educators has a channel, but they haven't updated it in forever. The Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) has a good channel with lots of videos on it, but most of the vids are their Three Minute Wine School, which are fine but don't deliver a ton of content. Are you currently pursuing a certification?

So gewürztraminer is rosé/pink colored grape. Yet still considered a green/white grape instead of a red/blue grape ?

It's a pink/grey grape, like Pinot Gris, but it tends to get thought of/treated like a white grape because it's so easy to vinify a white wine from it, again, like Pinot Gris. A lot of curricula/classification schemes (to say nothing of ordinary consumers) don't know quite what to do with grapes like these so they lump them in with the whites. Cheers!

The Unknown Wine caster thanks. So according to let's say WSET education it's wrong to state its a white grape variety? Thinking about it.. it's a bit strange saying 'white' and 'red' when the colors are more green and blue. Same goes for 'white wine' ofc..any insights on that matter?

I think the WSET treats the pink/grey grapes as white grapes --- Pinot Gris/Grigio is covered under the white winemaking chapter in the WSET3 Study Guide, for example. French Wine Scholar also treats pinks/greys as whites. It's really just a convention based largely on the fact that they tend to be vinified without skin contact much more than with it, so the best advice I have is just use whatever term/classification your curriculum does. With reference to the white/red thing, remember that that's just an English speaking convention -- the French do white/black (e.g., Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir) and the Spanish do white/tinted (Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Tinta, e.g.). The WSET follows this and calls "red" grapes "black" grapes -- maybe that's a British thing. Again, just do what the curriculum does. Remember, when in Rome... drink Frascatti. Cheers!
