Naish Wing and IRocker Sport Inflatable Standup Paddleboard on the water together for the first time!
How hard can it be?
I wasn't too sure what to expect, but I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
It's a great way to take the next step on your winging journey. I'd recommend trying it, but be prepared for some up-wind paddling.
Having to walk back to where you started because you can't ride back up-wind is endearingly called 'the walk of shame', but there was no shame to be had in all that paddling...
Hope this gives you confidence to try it too, enjoy the ride!

Look at getting a Slingshot SUP Winder. It’s a keel that allows you to sail up wind. I used one on my SUP and was sailing upwind the first day. Now I’ve graduated to the foil board…🤙🏼

Nice one! Yes they look useful. It was pretty much downwind with the inflatable SUP, 45 degrees across the wind for a short time at best, but I found it useful as a next step and getting a feel of using the wing on the water. I'm going to bite the bullet though and use a larger foil board for my next practice sessions. May as well go for it!

Thanks for the post. I love paddleboarding with an iSUP on lakes and rivers. Not much of a saltwater guy. So, I’ve been looking to get a wing to liven up my flat water experience. I’m looking to go the same path…iSUP with a wing and then maybe a foil with a wing. All options are far more affordable than an efoil 😉
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, hope it helped in some way. I totally agree, an efoil would be such a good way too learn if not so expensive, even lessons or hiring them seem alot. My plan is just take it a step at a time and build my skills and experience as I go. It's been a fun journey so far so why not? Let me know how it goes!

Nicely done and nicely filmed. I've been efoiling last 2 summers and now learning the wing on land and preparing to take my first wing/sup rides. Also at a reservoir though mine is elevated 40' and has a 15-20mph pretty frequently.

So as I have seen you on the land board on the beach sand it appears as though when on the SUP the wing is backwards, or so it appears. I realize you stated your plan was to paddle upwind and head downwind with the wing. I am not sure if the camera was doing something which made it appear that the wing was backwards but….. Thanks for your time, effort, and patience when producing your progress. I am planning to use your same method in order to get to foiling with fun over frustration. Be well!

Thanks, it's a good point. That was my first ever attempt on the water. There wasn't enough wind really so I was having to hold the wing up and eventually my arms got too tired. In the end I rested it on the sup and just used it as a kind of sail to pull me downwind - very poor technique but still a really valuable first experience on the water. I guess if you're used to the water you could try stronger winds, but it's all about taking it a step at a time, building confidence and enjoying the journey. The next step is to get used to a large foil board.... have fun!

I went out on my ISUP in 8-10 knot winds and like you, it wasn’t enough to adequately fly the wing (a 5.4). My arms got tired holding the wing aloft…..no fun!! 12-15 would have been perfect.
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, 12-15 knots of steady wind would really accelerate the learning experience! It can be frustrating, but clearly for most learning to wing is going to be a journey rather than an event. I think it's true that any time spent on the water counts though, here's hoping for better winds next time👍🏽

Nice. Next step into the water. No broken fingers, bruises or scrapes unless you fall on the sup. I think the only thing you might need to work on going back to the land skateboard is "pumping" for the wind. I used to windsurf and pumping was fairly mandatory in light winds. Keep on.
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it was alot of fun and definitely the next step for me! Pumping the wing is certainly necessary in low wind. My wing has a good wind range but I'm thinking a bigger wing would get me out more in lighter winds, something for 10 to 14 knot sunny days would be nice... 🤔

What is you were kneeling could you wing at all? Exactly what I’m thinking is yes, rest the wing on the board a bit and make a kind of sail! I will watch your channel thanks ! Have you had any luck going upwind ? Did you attach any extra fin in the boards center ? I got an isup last year and I know I want some kind of sail.
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 2 жыл бұрын
You can't use kneeling as it would drag in the water - and it needs to be held correctly for it to work properly. This video was of my first try so my technique is poor, and I found it impossible to go up wind. You can get centre fins now to practice more upwind riding but ive not tried any. It is great fun though and well worth trying if you have a safe location where you won't get blown downwind too far!

Did you ever learn to wing foil? If so, how hard was it. I'm 56 and wanting to learn.
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 5 ай бұрын
I've had a few goes and it's a lot of fun, but the foil is a whole new skill which takes time - it's not the physical effort (which is a fun challenge) it's having enough time to put towards it, including driving to a suitable flat water location. I found I need more regular practice on flatter water, so time and location are my biggest hurdles and hold me back currently. Best thing I'd say is take lessons and see how you find it. If you have easy access to flatter water it will definitely help.

Hello, I am looking to buy a SUP and was wondering what SUP would be better to use with a wing? A touring or an allround and what about the size? I had my eye on the aqua marina beast 10'6" 320cm 32" 81cm 6" 15cm.
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 Жыл бұрын
Hi, a wing would work with any SUP I think. It's fun but you are quite limited with what you can do, mostly just going downwind - which in retrospect I think the video demonstrates quite well. I'd suggest thinking about what you want to use the SUP for most of the time (without the wing) and buy the SUP most suitable for that. For example if new to SUP an allround would be ideal. Perhaps have a look at the Slingshot SUP winder attachment, or even the 11ft Slingshot crosswinder as the extra fin attachment will help. Of course there's also the option of buying a big floaty foil board if you're thinking about heading down the foil route! Hope that helps, difficult to give specific advice really 🙂

Your wing is in the wrong direction and also u need a centerbord to go up wind.

Thanks. Yes, a lot is being learned! This was my first attempt. I'll be trying with a large/sup foil board next so unlikely to use the isup with the wing again.

I second this. You need a center fin much like a centerboard or keel are essential to sailboat , even for reaching along the wind.

Sailing on lakes is always awkward because wind gets distorted by the land, trees etc. Even worse when light .

Thanks. Yes I do see what you mean. There was not enough wind looking back, though that's kind of how I wanted it for my first try. I think I'm actually holding the wing over my ead in the thumbnail pic, rather than the wind holding it

I recommend a course. It will 💯% not work if you bend your front arm 😅= gets to low! keep going with 95% straight front arm over your head & not moving to much also you should keep your feet aligned in a windsurf kind of way.

I was going to suggest you go back to that beach where you land boarded, but that might be jumping two steps ahead. You know the next step is to transition from a SUP(high water drag) to a small wakeboard(less drag). Then ultimately, going to a hydrofoil board, which is designed for slow water speeds. Ideal for the wingsail(actually the original intention). You might consider a "parallel" route to the ultimate goal. Start practicing on a hydrofoil board with no wingsail. I've never been on a hydrofoil surfboard of any kind, but I'm certain it feels like a surfboard on ice skates. No leaning. All toe action while maintaining a tightrope type body balance.
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes, a transition is definitely required. I'm fairly new to paddleboarding too so have been getting some practice in lately, especially riding in surf stance. Hoping that I can move on to a floaty foil board by the end of the summer... It's all a challenge, but fun and rewarding so far. I'll be keeping the iSUP though, it's so nice to paddle about on a flat calm hot beach day (when we occasionally get them)!

This exercise was the equivalent of holding a large piece of cardboard and getting pushed straight downwind, not sailing. You got some balance exercise….

Your holding your paddle backwards. The blade tip should be away from you. This will increase efficiancy.

How many Pins have your sup? Is not stable?
@intheoutside123
@intheoutside123 2 жыл бұрын
3 fins - perhaps it looks unstable as this was my first go with the wing and sup, plus I was not that experienced with the sup either when i filmed! I did this to get some experience, definitely worthwhile having never tried it before. I still really enjoy the sup but would not usually use it with the wing
