Really good video. Thanks! The fundamentals are pretty much the same as sailing, with some surfing. Using sailing terminology like sheeting and jibing (gybing) may add some confusion for non sailors. The American Sailing Association calls sheeting in trimming and sheeting out easing. (Technically there's no sheet on a hand held wing. The sheet is the line (rope) that controls the sail clew (back corner) on a sailboat.) That said, understanding the points of sail would seem to benefit all wind sports.

I'm a wingfoiler, and the biggest mistake I made when self-teaching is thinking that I would get up in the light winds that all these videos show. (If it looks like this, don't bother going out!) Otherwise, great video.

I am self taught too since the very first wings (2019), struggled even as a former World Cup windsurfer due to having no instructor/anyone to learn from. On the other hand, I taught my daughter and many, many people to wing, within hours in some cases. So a lesson/good advice is most certainly worthwhile, on the other hand, the latest gear does make life a LOT easier than a few years ago.

Actually nothing like windsurfing . I did that for 40 years. I have had 6 1hr sessions on the wing and still have not had a successful flight. Problem is u need good wind and flat water to learn
@kshred3043Ай бұрын
Actually very much like windsurfing in terms of wing control. If you can already feel and react to the wind in a windsurfing sail, then you have a big head start in wind control. One key difference is that you can instantaneously and completely de-power the wing by letting with your back hand and letting it 'flag out'.

hmm, depending on your watersports/windsports background - have seen people up and foiling within minutes, whilst others took weeks/months - generally with the right gear, good instructors and most importantly enough wind, it is possible to learn pretty quickly - but these three things do not always work out! :-)

@@duotone.wingfoilinggreat video but I agree with others, this is a hard sport to master for many. I have several decades surfing but a lack of wind expertise means a steep learning curve. Also getting on foil can take a fair bit of time and winging upwind, tacking etc ain’t effective until you are consistently on foil. Be inspired by the video folks, just do some due diligence with other videos on the true learning experience

Why would the manufacturers choose torx screws? Surely cross head is a lot better as it only requires a readily available tool rather than specialist
@duotone.wingfoiling2 ай бұрын
fairly simple, because the forces involved on opening/closing the foils properly, makes simply cross head screws loose their head threads pretty quickly/you cannot apply the same force required to tighten foil parts properly when using classic cross or flat head screw drivers. All of our foils are supplied with the necessary tools, also Torx heads are much better when they get older, as you can still use a worn head to open a tight screw. Pretty clear that all manufacturers reached the same conclusion here after a few years.
@LoanwordEggcornАй бұрын
Torx screws are a much better fastener. It's a radiused spine drive.

As far as stress on the back, is this easier or harder than windsurfing?
@duotone.wingfoiling3 ай бұрын
Way less stress for the back, the only issue can be shoulders, but this is really in rare cases, when holding the wing up in zero wind/if you have shoulder issues already which do not allow you to hold any kind of weight above chest height...

I currently windfoil with a 98cm carbon mast and 95cm fuselage. I have front wings 1200, 920, 720 and 550. For wingfoiling, I'm thinking a 65cm fuselage and either a 1600 or 2000 front wing on the existing mast and 310 or 255 stab. Thoughts?

not cheap, so good idea to look for used beginner setups. typically want 2 size wings, say 4m and 6m, for different riding conditions. Maybe around $600-700 each. Same price range for a beginner board. Foils have the largest ranges in price with aluminum being heavier but cheaper than carbon. My coach recommended starting me on a cheaper alloy mast and a size 1480 front wing. All in I'm around $3500-4k plus wetsuit, helmet

@@duotone.wingfoiling Thanks, watching closely I seem to notice that the guys doing aeriels (sp) might have foot straps attached keeping connected to the board, so maybe never switch, just adjust their position or even "push" with the wing to windward

correct, some ride strapless, some ride only on one side using 2 footstraps with the front strap being more centred, even jumping in "switch". A large % of riders using the classic 3 strap system from windsurfing and change sides/straps when turning around.

@duotone.wingfoiling2 ай бұрын
not really, the only real issues that happen during wingfoiling are falling on the rail of the board if it is turned on it's side, or contact to the foil. With the leashes, most of the time the board will move away from your body during a crash, the wing goes neutral and cannot hurt you - the leashes just make sure you do not lose your gear.
