Wing Chun or Boxing? Both!

There's an irrational assumption that boxing and Wing Chun are antithetical and that you can't do both. The problem with this is that without safe sparring there's no way to develop timing and accuracy. Moreover, there's no better way than boxing to get a chance to see punches coming at you. That's a critical skill! But what about infighting? What about life-or-death type struggles where anything and everything goes...where no target or tactic is off the table? Well, that's where Wing Chun comes in. And the number one drill that Wing Chun gives us to make sure we can function under pressure at this range (infighting) is chi-sao.
This is why we advocate for doing both - so long as you have professional and experienced coaches and instructors. Training should be logical and goal directed. It should be safe too! Realistic and real aren't the same thing. Anyway, check out the video to learn more.

What I love about boxing is your learning to give out punches while also learning to receive them and what I love about wing chun is your learning to use your hands to extend outward pressure under pressure while nullifying pressure coming at you in real time combining the 2 with some type of take down throwing flipping type arts then you have a complete street defence strategy

Wing Chun has takedowns. But it’s almost never practiced. So what you say is true. In a certain point of view. But what really needs to be added is some Bjj techniques. Yes it’s suicide to be on the ground in a fight, but some base techniques will save your life and can even save someone else’s life.

trained wc for 10 years taught for 2, been boxing the past 2 and a half years. I train in an old school fashioned gym, we spar hard, and we learn straight punches high guard aggression first. My exploration of the sweet science has not once contradicted the logic of wing chun but has only enhanced it. Hands up elbows in, move forward, with my background i tend to fight closer and use my chi sao in company of headmovement and hooks. My next fight is 6-22 wish me luck!

I only box, but from what i can see of wing chun there is at least a massive difference in the posture of the spine and how we hold our chin.

@lebatcritique you don't need to do anything in a specific way in either... depending on coach and sifu/ understanding. Wc is suppose to be a conceptual martial art so nothing in the forms needs to be as it looks

@@nicholasjavier8747 Huh, you definitely need to keep your chin down in boxing. I mean, you can keep it up if you like, but you'll soon find out why we keep it down.

@@lebatcritique I'm a boxer.. and I detest traditional wc 😅 I spar pro and ex pro, have 2 amateur bouts and train under legit coaches... 10 years of wc is just part of my life's journey... I live next door to the boxing gym 6 days a week 3 hard spars a week..

This is something I've been pondering on quite a lot recently and I'm glad I've come across this video. I keep seeing other posts agreeing Wing Chun is Chinese Boxing. We do have the hook punch and uppercut in the system so why not use Western Boxing to learn how to Bridge the gap without eating shots on entry 🙏🙂 I do know people that don't want to break tradition through a fear of ridicule, but I feel this is the way forward if we're gunna progress against the more modern ways of fighting. Even with some professional boxers like Joe Joyce in the heavy weight division, he lacks head movement and he just comes forward and blocks punches with his head. Who want's brain related problems in later life?

I've enjoyed your videos for awhile. I look at Wing Chun as dirty boxing. It's what I would do to someone I knew was better. I'm stuck here. What are the most useful ways to just lash out and make this stop?

Wing Chun as dirty boxing isn’t a bad way to look at it. You’ve got a good read on it there. And like I say in the video, it’s the training (both the reflexes and tactical skill) that gives us the results. I say: practice Wing Chun and also learn to box in order to develop timing and accuracy. There’s not much chance of landing an eye jab if we can’t score a jab in sparring, after all. Hope this helped and real glad that you’ve enjoyed the channel.

everyone thinks wing chun works until they get punched in the face, then arm flailing starts

Oleg, it does work. I escaped a street encounter by stepping in and upsetting the balance of my attacker. I was a sectional level wrestler in my state. I'm not going to the ground or trading punches with anyone I don't want to. It only took two jabs before I turned his body around and got the fuck out of there. Jab jab lap sau step push and I'm gone. I probably didn't even hurt him. I didn't show up for breakfast with grandma with a black eye. Wing Chun is very compatible with wrestling and boxing.

I personally believe that wing chun is a system built on anti grappling principles. Grappling and trying to overpower with brute strength seems to be a very common approach for bigger guys fighting smaller people. So Wing Chun is based on how to overcome this. It's not meant to be used in sport fighting; while boxing is. So I believe this is why so many Wing Chun guys are losing to boxers. Plus sport fighters have a lot me experience. This is my opinion.

On your keyboard, there should be a little dot button like this: [.] Every time you say one sentence, or basically one whole thought, put that little dot at the end. People understand wtf you're on about a bit better if you separate words into groups for one idea at a time. You can make other shapes to put in that word vomit to help you sound smarter than a 5 year old, but we you have to start somewhere.

Boxers use the two knuckle landing digging in with a kink in the wrist and raising the shoulder cover the chin. Most WingChun exponents would get knocked out by a reasonable Boxer.

@@jarrodpelrine7229 Wing Chun practitioners would love to blend in some boxing because it would make them better but they don't want to belittle what they have already learnt. Most boxers wouldn't want/need to add Wing Chun.

Wing chun will get you seriously hurt in a real fight. Take if for what it is, a tradition. If you want to increase your survival in a street fight stick with boxing. That trainer would be out of breath before the fight even began.
