Hi Sifu Henry- great video on a subject not often discussed among Wing Chun circles, viz sparring. Would you please do a video reviewing the gear you use? I notice in your videos you and your students use a variety of gear during sparring. Appreciate all you provide for us viewers.

It's good but it can be better if they try counter attack too. They tend to stop puching when blocked. They can work their hand technique more to clear the blocking hands.

Tho honestly majority of people begin sparring wayy wayy before they should even be learning techniques or have developed the physical and mental abilities of the body to a high enough level to even worry about fighting. The entire first 1-3 years would typically be focused on things like that to develop yourself physically to sufficient enough level to be fighting anyone, then you would learn techniques and THEN attempt at what most call "sparring" rather than the more common : "okay I've got 2 months of light training, let's spar" lol I would legitimately laugh if someone were to approach me like that

You get the point! A big mistake of the largest number of Wing Chun schools is the lack of sparring. It is essential for timing, mental reactivity, muscular memory and balance. Sparring is close to a real fight and (especially when it is not collaborative) helps you find a way to attack and defend in a more realistic context. Chi Sao is not oriented to real fighting, it is just a way to develop arms sensitivity and close the gap from the opponent. It is in no way comparable with the sparring since they are two completely different things. Chi Sao and sparring are complementary and should be practised to build up a complete set of skills. Great video!

Well of course, although sparring is NOT FIGHTING. it is training, typically focused on working specific aspects of particular techniques/martial arts concepts etc. It is not intended to be "okay y'all just fight". Your not learning anything in that situation and sparring is about learning and building, you will do neither in a fight.

Well, Ving Tsun has some varieties of chi sao and some of them are there to aproach more to what would be a realistic aplication of the techniques learned. Also there are other exercises than Chi Sao (mostly presented in the 4th level of studying) wich will make this conection of the realm of studying and the realm of figthing. I'm not saying that sparring like in the video is not valid. It is actually good for fisical and mental work, but at the same time there is a big risk to create a bad interpretation or even a desconstruction (in a negative sense) of the art. So it should be used as a experience but with a profund conscience of the most refined purpose of Ving Tsun and real understanding of it's techniques in order to not fall in a gap of understanding. This is very easy to perceive when you see Ving Tsun practioners "figthing" (or sparring) like they were kick Boxing or in a mma match. As i said above... nothing directly wrong on doing this. But assuming that this would be the realistic aplication of VT in a fight is a great and dangerous mistake, that compromises the whole previously work done with the art. If one sees that sparring like this is the direct aplication of the art, why not simply train kick Boxing? Certainly would be a lot better.

What you just said sound like a bunch of excuses. 1. There is NO level 4 in fighting. 2. Incase you are to ignorant to hear, the instructor here stated why and what is learned from it. 3. Your narrow mindedness will only get you severely hurt thinking Leung Tings wing chun is the best, I have yet to see any of his best students step into the ring.

@@bayani1246 i think you should work your reading a bit more. Also your basic knowledge of VT. Meaning that what i referred as 4th level being level of the system not figthing. If tou knew the art a little bit (or had a better reading skill) you would have understood not only this, but that i didn't criticsized or oposed to the idea above. Another thing... i have never studied under Grand Master Leung Ting lineage. I don't know why you assumed that. But by the nature of your comment, i kind of see the movement of your mind.

@@bayani1246 well... the letter V is quite other then the letter W. The Grand Master Leung Ting lineage uses W and not V. So, they write Wing Tsun. Others lineages uses WC and anothers VT. Talking about ignorance... To bring light to the situation would be wise to stop here and give time to a greater purpose. Studying, for example. A sugestion i could give: the Ving Tsun realms of knowledge. You can start by counting them. Good lucky! Every one can learn. Just need the right aproach and truth alignment. Don't waste energy.

C'mon guys and gals.. A little rougher. (Puts on Tekken music..) THAT'S TOO ROUGH!.. Heh.. I remember when a couple friends were sparring, playing around in my house, these guys are untrained right, not even really fighters and Rob throws a Hadouken at Daryl and Daryl did a low 360 spinning Tiger Uppercut as a joke, and Rob walked into it actually connected lightly but it was enough to knock Rob on his butt lol.. Daryl was like, "You shouldn't have threw the fireball at me.." We were all howling in disbelief that it worked, and my brother's like, "Oh, well Jay knows how to do a Shoryuken." They're all looking at me like, "really?"

It isn't something recommend, that's not how you learn or practice anything, especially not without years of constant training(where you actually develop and learn things). And "real fight" equals one of you probably dying so those aren't recommend either and certainly are not learning situations. I mean you could go have a boxing match or something I suppose, but that isn't a "real fight" either. And wing Chun is not for competition so you would do terribly for the most part in competition, if that's your personal interest I'd probably recommend other arts

First of all there is no problem. Second, most Wing Chun people have not been taught how to punch using hooks, uppercut’s and back fists. Let alone other kicks like the sweep kick, side kick, etc. And if you have never been exposed to such techniques, how can you defend against them? Most people rely heavily on Chi Sau and theory without putting their knowledge to the test against a non compliant person. Everything you see in my videos is Wing Chun period. All our techniques can be found in the WC forms.
