So in a real street fight, the Wing Chun Steve can do whatever he wants, but for some reason the MMA guy is bound by rules of the UFC?

Yes, also Wing Chun Steve is apparently so competent in these dirty fighting moves despite the fact that there is no way to practice them in the training room because you would disable your training partner. This guy is so deluded I feel like it must be trolling.

wrong chu fighter can do whatever he wants in da streetz, he can get his weak groin kick checked and break his toes on someone's knee and can try to poke to the eye and get jabbed twice in the jaw by a boxer that moves his head unlike wooden dummy and he can cry for help and ask his friends to jump the guy but they wont do it its just too lethal

@@areallybigdwarf4560they don't realize that MMA guys can also attack the groin or eyes in a setting with no rules and would most likely do it even better than the wing chun fighter

This topic has been debated to death, and there is one answer to the question "which is better" that nobody on either side seem to understand. The answer is: who cares. Train the martial art that you enjoy, and leave other people alone. Is WC, Karate, or Kung Fu effective against MMA in an MMA ring? No. Are they effective in "the street"? Maybe. But the reality is, in a "real life" situation, if the situation lands in a physical altercation, you've already fucked up. You want self defense? Learn situational awareness, de-escalation, and train running away. In the real world when tension is high, you're going to do the thing you train. If all you train is how to fight, you're going to jump to violence long before it's necessary and not see the other options. That's a good way to wind up injured, dead, or in jail. You want to know the best martial art for self defense? It's parkour. If I can put a fence between me and a guy with a knife, the situation is solved. Just train your art and stop circling back to this stupid topic.

The Wing Chun guys care all to Hell. I live in Taiwan where Wing Chun used to have a major presence. Taiwanese kind of laugh about it now. It's probably good training for a guy who's not very athletic for a road rage fight against a pre-diabetic salesman, but it's not real fighting. How would you feel if you'd been doing it for 14 years because you thought it was the secret to Bruce Lee's celebrity?

I’d like to play devils advocate, full disclosure I do wing chun but not for self defence whatever that is. WC provides a life time practice with potential tools that could be used in altercation. I am not athletic or fit enough to do combat sports but what it has over WC is pressure testing. Watch judo folks sparring. They absolutely could eye jab hit the throat kick the groin if they wanted to. Understand that once you resort to eye and throat attacks you just raised the bar. If MMA guys are adept at striking whilst under pressure they could also target eyes throat. They’ve got a proven delivery system. so I don’t think the old argument of the forbidden techniques vs sport works anymore. It’s been debunked loads of times. Some WC schools do spar but mostly against other WC club members who emulate shitty boxing or takedowns. In an MMA school you’ll get to experience against proper takedowns and how people actually punch. Finally after the slappy happy kenpo people (sorry) WC are some of the most unfit people I’ve seen. We need to sell WC in a different way.

As a "non-wc-guy" I am also a little curious what special defensive techniques WC have that are specific for eye-pokes, throatpunches and groin strikes etc? It feels like the defence for jabs, strikes towards the chin and low/mid-kicks should cover those areas also decently?🤔

context is king and the context is that everytime a wrong chu fighter goes up against a 40yr old mma fighter or a boxer that fights with only one hand they get their asses kicked no matter how many times they try to kick to the nuts or poke to the eyes

What part of MMA isn’t used in “context” as you say? Sifu are you implying that everything in MMA is only for sports? That’s absurd and you should know it! Any form of so called fighting is utilized accordingly depending upon what you’re using it for specifically, so now that I’ve made sense of your dodgy nonsense, can you please at least answer the real question as best as you can as to whether you’re “internal” wing chun can be used against MMA specifically the way a typical UFC fighter uses it in a sports setting? I’m a believer but no longer a practicing “internal” martial artist due to the fact that it’s too obscure, confusing and never any teachers within the USA that practice or in the least come to an agreement on what it actually is! But what I’ve personally experienced from a few tai chi teachers and practitioners, and extensive research I believe internal martial arts to be true! I’ve lost my ambition however, of learning or ever seeing it in a real world setting sports wise or other sadly because all practitioners unanimously choose to never ever unify and show it’s true capabilities in settings like every other fighting arts openly does. 😳🤦🏻‍♂️🙄/👌✌️🤲☝️😔

Great points. I would add another. How realistic and taxing is MMA on the body is it when you get older? In Wing Chun, your skills get so much better the longer you train. The one thing in MMA’s favour is that it prepares them more physical acts, whereas I don’t know to me Wing Chun schools that do full on attacks in each other. That’s more a reflection of the training environment than the style.

But how do you pressure test wing chun so that it is ready for a spontaneous attack or ambush? I've trained at two wing chun clubs and there was no sparring in either -- well, there were head gear and 16 oz gloves at one club but no one sparred. A fighting system that does not partake in any kind of sparring against a non-compliant, resisting partner (and it doesn't need to be 100% full contact but does require realism and spontaneity) is ill equipped to apply what they practice for actual fighting. The closest to sparring in the traditional Hong Kong style curriculum of wing chun is chi sao but chi sao is not sparring. Not even close It is a drill or exercise specifically designed to improve sticking and attacking but here's the fundamental flaw of chi sao: it is two compliant people. Even if some of the attacks and defense and counters are spontaneous, the two participants agree to stay in chi sao, or trapping range. This is totally unrealistic because no one in a street fight, or even a friendly spar, is going to stay stationary nor allow you to "stick" to them and sticking or trapping range is far more difficult than you would think against a non-compliant person who will engage and disengage, attack and counter attack, at their will. The fellow who runs the Inside Fighting channel gave the best analysis that trapping range is really just a transient range in between clinching, and punching range, and is only there for a brief second in a fight. Therefore, why would one invest in their time spending 90 to 100% of their practice in a range that is like 5% or less of a total fight? I would advise anyone doing wing chun to take up muay Thai once they have achieved a level of expertise in wing chun. There are techniques in muay Thai that translate well to wing chun. For example, the long guard is very akin to the bridging arm of wing chun and used against an aggressive opponent to "bridge" or intercept the attack to both defend and create space for counterattack. There are many parrys and checking of the attacker's lead hand which are similar to using pak sao, and lop sao respectively. Finally, knowing trapping range of wing chun will translate well to the exciting and effective clinch and sweeps that are part of muay Thai.

Excellent interpretation and guidelines to whichever fits you best going forward? Myself 4Th Dan Ju Jitsu training every week for 26 years. Tai chi doing daily 22years. Therefore I’ve got a feel for both. They both hold very different values. Embrace it all if you have the time? I’ll never get attached because I’m always in the Dojo. Into the car for home and straight to bed! Nobody has the time to attack me because I always tell them I’m to busy to stand and talk. 👍🏻

Asking wing chun vs mma is like asking " conceal carry 9mm pistol in a dinner jacket vs FAL 7.62 battle rifle with a bayonet and body armor " are you in a taxi or lift? are you in field 200 meters apart? details matter. Wing chun works when the person you are using it on does not know you know it, and you are a vicious bastard to begin with it has to have venom and a bit of spite. wing chun does not work when the person you are using it on knows about the fight starts at a distance and can take and throw harder punches and kicks than than you. wing chun is also far more effective on hard floor in hard shoes and preferably bare knuckle with no rules as are all martial arts goes with out saying really

Basically I disagree with most of what you have said. Boxing, MMA, kick boxing are so called sports, but a very very effective in the streets. Yes Wing Chun is effective, and yes going against an MMA fighter in the streets may cause the MMA guy a problem due to no-rules. But you're missing the main thing. It all depends on the skill level of the fighter, their environment, their stamina. An MMA fighter could easily over come a wing tsun practioner. You talk about context but you have missed a whole load of context.

I don't think people are really wrapping their head around a 'real street fight'.... you can get shot or stabbed. All this style talk is absolute nonsense at best. Anyone who practices any martial art, mixed or otherwise needs to understand that 'contex'. Train smart peace and love

Im comparing martial arts by simple rule. If I take two avarage males and one let do one martial art and other guy other martial art. Let them have a fight after one year of training and you will se what happen. Yes I know there is nothing like average male but come on you know what I mean. 😅

This is a terrible argument. You're comparing Wing Chun with UFC fighting- it's MMA with rules. Real MMA is just as it says, Mixed Martial Arts so it can use anything it wants. That includes a ground game far advanced over anything WC has. It can use wrestling which is far advanced over anything WC has. And yes, the modern MMA stand up style is superior to WC stand up. Also, it's real simple to add dirt to "combat sports" which would work just as well as your WC eye poke, back of head punch etc. Make the correct comparison and the answer will come down on the side that has the superior range of martial arts- MMA. Having said that I have used the WC chain punch in a street fight and in that immediate context it worked well, so it's not like WC techniques are useless. But I ended the fight using a more traditional western boxing style.

Also. WC could be part of the MMA arsenal. MMA cannot be compared to just one martial art. As its a mix of anything that works.
