2:10 One problem as I see it. The speed and reaction of the blows are great, but the stance is not very mobile and strong because the base/feet position are side by side, that's why the man on the left is being thrown back easily, even though he is bigger. The front foot forward/bladed stance is much more mobile, safer and presents a smaller target to be hit. You can get more power and reach out of this stance as well, since you can stay a little further away from the attacker/opponent, while still being able to turn your upper body into the punches. The vertical fist makes it a little more difficult to turn at the point of impact for torque/ripping effect verses the horizontal/boxing fist.

I know you think that. But trust me. I do a lot of vertical fist. It’s all in the timing.

Yes. It's good when you get to sparring, real sparring. I learned in combination with plain old boxing. There you get a better approach to use some wing chun in sparring. And yes, turning the fist penetrates guard, that angular momentum drills through yeah! 🤝 When doing this in sparring, and incorporating the chum kiu footwork, it gets you a better grasp on what to expect from applying the siu lim tao. Since many teachers do chi sao when you are getting the siu lim tao, it's not that one spars like that, mobility for both opponents, sparring be like...

I'm interested in the wooden dummy in the beginning and during the video. It doesn't look wood. May I have info on it. Mine was attacked by termites, I live in south Florida. Thank You!

Adam, have you practice “feeding hand” drills? We would Pak Sao when the feeder would touch the outside wrist or the shoulder.

A new one .😎🤙🏿2:17 I do mine the same way except, I use a BUI GEE/cheung choy split. Poke and punch. If I poke outside I punch inside. If he jams or gets stiff? Right around him. Poke inside? Punch outside. Poke outside? Punch inside. 🐉😉🤛💥

From what I understand, Bagua can use the inside, but you're also moving around to a new center, and you can always use the same arm or hand to redirect or block a hand that comes at you. One arm basically has 3 fists on it

Yes, it's like other arts. From the inside is applied with that flanking movement you have as bawa practitioner🤟🤟🤟🤝

No pak from the inside because you have to use the same direction of the opponents punch and from the inside you are opposing it.

_ So should the dummy be constructed differently, for proper training ? Could you do some clips around the Bong Sau, as the end of first form and middelpart Walk in the second form. It is thruout the 2 forms but it is rare I see you use it with Chris ;) .. ?

I wonder how you deal with a left/right hook or overhead using this technique ?
@gthicks006
@gthicks006 Жыл бұрын
You don't. This is a defense for a linear attack. So straight shot or cross style attack. Pak intercepts the line on a roughly a 35 to 45 degree angle to the line of attack. Doesnt work against round attacks too well.

If you really wanted to simply, efficiently, yet effectively use this against an incoming hook... You would turn your pak sau into a strike to the main body and hope you strike first. Pak the face, for example. If you're dead set on trying to use the pak sau as a trap/block onto opponent's arm when they hook, then that's troublesome. It's not efficient and not effective. You have biu sau or tan sau that can handle a hook comparatively better. But if your hand shape happens to be like a palm strike for a pak sau and you're moving to strike, whether it turns into a trap or a strike... then it's a similar game of a left/right hook vs a straight: who's is faster? Under this context, it won't deal with the hook directly. Instead, it would deal with it indirectly by going straight for the "commander" instead of a "pawn/soldier". It definitely is risky though. The better your training, timing, reflexes, and experiences, the better your chances.

"We don't pak the in door" ... Yes, it's wrong pak sao... However, that's the "door" meaning on entry.... From the inside, we have inside pak sao (different angle - side pak) where pak (replaces tan) and the same arm's elbow controls the other arm by pinning with the elbow... And the free arm hits... Then the faan sao is pak/pin arm converts to lan sao... Do you consider this also wrong pak even though the pak arm controls both his arms?

But he was not flanking and the other guy might move along, so it's better to keep it simple, so I think the one you said, that's an interesting case for the master to show 🤝

What you're describing to me sounds like what happens in chi sao. Correct me if I'm wrong. But that scenario comes up in chi sao in a couple ways, i was tought to use it when someone's fuk is pressing hard into your bong, as you rotate to tan your fuk crosses center paking your partners fuk hand trapping the tan underneath freeing up your tan hand to strike a la pak dar. Could also initiate this by stepping into the pak dar if your partner isnt giving pressure. But this prob doesn't happen in the real world since most people won't attack you with two arms as a single strike, hence the not paking the inner gate because the other arm is back and free and will strike. So you'd have to use the same pak hand to counter which leaves the inner gate block so you get hit by the hand you were paking or the free hand swinging. Or you cross yourself by keeping the inner pak and trying to block with the other arm and still get hit. Some WC sifus don't teach that inner pak in chi sao as they believe it can build bad/ unrealistic habits and is a chi sao only technique.

@@gthicks006 hm. But IMHO it's also a question of using the inner pak but not in those situations. And yes, it is a question of not doing it if opponent's other hand is free, because obviously, you don't have cover at that side and crossing is not the optimal way. The other can trap your hands. Well, it's just a matter of lots of different possible scenarios. They would be nice to watch, master Adam!

there is not such thing as ‘in-door/wrong pak sao’. it only depends on the circumstances.
@misterlau5246
@misterlau5246 Жыл бұрын
@@ttx3 yes, indeed. But would you use it in the way the video shows it? It's more adequate to pak from the outside. Easier, but it needs flanking the opponent when applying it "indoors".

But what do you do when your opponent does not punch like someone from the 16th-century? 🤔That’s the real question.
