Not sure why I clicked on this video, but since I'm a winger with one summer under his belt, and since I basically agree with this video, I'll add my two cents. First mistake I made was buying weight+30. Maybe that works if you have flat water plus wind, but my experience is that most places with wind have choppy water. So I tried to find a used weight+40, couldn't find one, and bought a used weight+50. Awesome! Second mistake I made was wasting time trying to get on-foil in 10-12mph winds. Once I knew to search out real wind (in my case, average 20mph) I had a great summer, getting on-foil immediately every time. I did have the chance to get towed behind a boat early in my learning curve, and that taught me about breaching. The wingfoiling learning curve was difficult for me, so the boat experience was a great opportunity to learn how important it is to keep my weight forward. Now I need to figure out smooth silky turns!

Good tips! But I'm surprised you didn't talk about foil wing size. Most folks tell me that it's idea to start with something in the ~2000cm2 range.

I am new to the foil journey (wing foil, prone foil, SUP Foil) and I went with the commonly echoed advice of getting a 2000cm2 front wing. I began with a 1990cm2 front wing and I found it gave way too much lift! Even on slow mushy waves, it was super difficult to keep down to prevent a breach, even when I put the majority of my weight on my front foot . I bought a smaller 1550cm2 front wing and it made learning so much easier! Huge difference! I was able to control the amount of lift. btw I am not a lightweight at 95kg (191lbs). I have 40+ years surfing experience but only started with foiling about 6 months ago.

Hi, I’m very surprised about what you say, I m 95 kg and bought a Gong xOver XXL 2450 cm2 to begin, following the indications. Not yet tried , but when I read your comment I feel not at ease. But does the position of the the foil under the board have an incidence too ?
