READ DESCRIPTION
Hello from Liquid Blue Cabarete!
Charles Osterlund here and I hope you enjoyed the video! This video is similar to our most popular video to learning how to wing foiling though with a twist… it is live with a real student learning in real time.
The idea with this series is to show how a real student learns in real time wingfoiling. The sport has its intricacies though it is possible for anyone to learn with proper training.
Wingfoiling like kiteboarding has a “steep” learning curb that quickly tappers off. What this means is that in the beginning you will truly know very little and be a complete beginner though quickly with proper training you will develop skills and get exponentially better within a matter of days and hours.
Generally people learn the basics in 6-10 hours over the course of 3-5 days though this does not mean you know everything! You will always be learning in these sports. I am still learning after years of riding!
With an instructor you want to get up to a level where you can comfortably go out into the water, ride around foiling and get back to where you started. That is the first big milestone to reach to be considered a somewhat “independent rider”.
From that point you continue to practice at your pace and interest whether its transitions, swell/wave riding or freestyle tricks! The sport is so dynamic and there is no right or wrong progression after you get the basics
This video is a part of a series which is to document Bens entire wing foiling journey from zero to hero. The series will cover a good range of exercises both on land and on water with some theory to help you get started. I would always recommend checking out further videos on the channel as well others channels to get a solid theoretical foundation before practicing especially if by yourself. We always recommend if you have the chance to take lessons to do so as your learning curve will still be steep though it will be quicker and safer.
Remember that lots of practice play a key role when learning this extreme water sport, especially if you are a beginner and new to the foil so do not be discouraged as everyone progresses at their own rate.
Want to give a shout out to Dominican Republic as it is an amazing country to explore and the North Coast is the best spot for all of you willing to wind foil, surf, or kitesurf. We are based in Cabarete which is one of the most complete destinations for vacationing and water sports.

Hi Charles. The video definitely brings back memories of my day on the water in Cabarete and the challenge of balancing on the board plus trying to stand. After two years, I am now on the foil and working on staying balanced in gusty and shifting Iowa winds, but I am thankful for the instruction I received because I rely on it each time out on the water. Randy! Glad you are getting out there and pushing the limits. How many rides are out there in Iowa now? Whens the next trip down?

@@lbcabareteSeveral others are windfoiling but I have not seen any other wingfoilers. I hope to return soon to Cabarete with my wife since we really enjoyed our previous stay. Say hello to Francis.

Thanks for sharing Charles and Ben 👍 Charles what’s your opinion of starting with sup fins on wing board instead of foil to learn wing control? Cheers

You can though we personally don’t. Find it’s better to learn on the bigger gear you will actually use in the future. We only use a large SUP 200L if student has balancing issues. Wing control can be trained on land and on larger wing boards.

Nice video. Great way to show and instruct a beginner winger. You should show more of these types of lessons.

I'm currently not a winger but looking to take it up after selling my windfoiling setup. Your type of video is helping me with the decision (at age 62) to change to winging by showing real lessons. Keep it up Charles 👍@@charlesosterlund7303
