I'm into this sport only two months after a decade of kitefoiling and 20 years 2 of windsurfing. This experience has my jibing, switching feet, riding some swell. But The ONE reason I get exhausted early is the pumping up to foil. I hope I soon get to a level where this gets easier doing

Yes, light wind can be difficult. A downwind style board helps. With some experience you'll ride larger wings with more power. -Tucker

Hi Tucker Enjoying you video as ever. As a beginner Im trying to get the boardpumping working, so a nice and detailed ABC-video of that would be highly appreciated 🤙

Hi Tucker ! 4 years ago already, you mut have much improved your take off since !! I am interested in the issue of clock and counterclocking the pumping. First, what do you mean by "tack" in" left foot tack" (sic) ? That the left is the front foot ? It's important to know otherwise I will do the contrary of what you advise ! Then, do you mean you put some longitudinal (ie along the length of the board) move in the wing when the foil is still under the water ? It seems to me that if the left is the front foot and if the pumping is clockwise then air is thrown towards the front of the board so that it is counterproductive as the thus created airflow counters the actual wind, but I certainly misunderstand your tip. So far I only spoonpump without any longitudinal component, and I am very interested to understand your clock tip in order to improve my takeoff in very light wind. Thank you for helping !

Yes, it may be time to update this video soon. Wings have changed enough that some wings require different pumping techniques for different winds and board/foil combos, ect... -Tucker

Tucker, thanks for the quick tips. We are trying to visualize what you are saying from the video clips you included, but it’s difficult because It looks like you and the board are going up and down with each pump and the wing is remaining stationary. Is it possible to video this same pumping sequence from the vantage point you visually experience while riding?

Anytime Pablo, In this video I'm riding a Duotone Unit 5m and F-one Swing 6m with an 85cm board and roughly 1450cmsq foil. We just found these clips show the technique well. Obviously, I can get out in much lighter wind with "proper' lightwind gear. These days, I get my max low end with a Flysurfer Mojo 6.2 or F-one Swing CWC 7, 90L Appleslice, and SABfoil 1100 foil. With that combo, I can get up consistently in 10-12kn. -Tucker

Hi. What size and volume are those boards you are using in the video?

schould I start downwind for most power in the sail?

Great question. I'd point the board roughly 10-15 degrees downwind for maximum light wind ability. You want to try to build apparent wind without killing your board's momentum so that seems to be the sweet spot for me. -Tucker

How much are you using that foot strap? Looks like your pulling yourself and the board out of the water and using the wing to hang on too ?

Depends on the conditions and gear. This board is pretty small and riding in light winds. 85L compared to me at 90kg. On a small board I need that front strap to lift the board so it has less drag and can accelerate. I almost do a pull-up on the wing to get that board flying. On a larger board, especially longer, I can pump the wing to build board speed, then lift off more naturally. -Tucker
