On 13th Novemeber 2010, Hong Kong Ving Tsun Si Fu Kong Chi Keung has been to Shaolin South in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, given a wooden dummy as a gift back to the monks, and stayed 3 days teaching them the wooden dummy techniques

Interesting. I like watching Shaolin monks move, they are calm, fluid, relaxed, but can explode with speed and power and variety. They understand mobility and power generation, etc. better than a standard wing chun practitioner but they practice every day. I also practice wing chun, at first you are memorizing moves, techniques, and can be slower and more robotic. Eventually you grasp more concepts and move better and faster while staying relaxed and can strike better and faster, with less conscious effort. The Shaolin also stay healthy and mobile into old age, and graceful.

In my opinion all martial arts are good. Discipline, mind and physical conditioning. All are benefits from practicing any martial art. I studied Tae Kwon Do. The most I ever used in a street fight was blocks an a few punches. One time just one side kick. It all depends on who is fighting and ones confidence.

Wing Chun goes back to his roots! Ng Mui, the legendary founder of Wing Chun, was a Nun in Southern Shaolin Monastery. She gave the tresor of this beautiful Kung Fu style to Yim Wing Chun. Some say it's a combination of Southern Snake and Crane, but I see Mantis Style as well in it.

Ng Mui only taught 3 forms three weapons (Dragon pole and Butterfly knives are from Southern Shaolin) to the founders of Ving Tsung post Ng Mui teachings. Reason being she wanted to teach a quick learning powerful system.There were many other forms including a five animal Ving Tsung form. These other forms from Ng Mui are taught in Sydney Australia. I know of two very private elderly sifu of Pak Mei who teach them in Sydney. If you observe advanced Pak Mei you will definitely see Ving Tsung influenced by Pak Mei. I also seen a very respected sifu master of the original Southern Style Jow Gar practise very old Ving Tsung keun forms. So yes there is definitely Shoalin divergence and convergence Ving Tsung. I'm no expert and like many other comments, in my opinion a good teacher and disciplined hard working student make a great team to record the art and continuously learn and improve, no matter what style. You must master one, rather than be a master of many small keun (forms) otherwise you will always be an observer / spectator and not a combat fighter.Good video thank you for posting.

A Shaolin monk is not a beginner. While he is from a different system, he is already a gong fu and body mechanics expert. He is also adept in a style far more complex than Wing Chun. Teaching a beginner Wing Chun is like teaching simplified characters to a non-Chinese speaker. Teaching a beginner Shaolin is like teaching traditional characters to a non-Chinese speaker. Teaching a Shaolin monk Wing Chun is like teaching simplified characters to a traditional character calligraphy artist.

You miss the point that they are relearning an old shaolin art that got muddied by hollywood. Wing Chun may appear basic, but is extremely effective even for a highly skilled monk. What you see on tv is just what they let the cameras see. I can guarantee that Wing Chun has seen more street fighting and won in the past 50 years than any shaolin long forms have. They are just for show and exercise anymore. A way to keep shaolin open really.

Shaolin has many styles... In the North They had Tai Chi to train sensitivity and in the south they had Wooden man and Wing chun not just the wing chun wooden man but entire sets based some based on Bagua, some on tai chi, some based on Hsing I and even meteor fist and five animal... it is still alive at the Shaolin Schools in america, But Shaolin is like a University that has managed to retain tons of styles over 900 forms where most schools are more like a college within the university. To think that Shaolin is only long forms is not accurate, they have Mantis, Monkey, Yang Tai Chi, Bagua (Pakua) Hsing-I, Meteor Fist, Chen Tai Chi, Shangtung Black Tiger, White Tiger, Golden Tiger, Birds, Eagle Claw, Hua Fist, 5 Animal, Tiger-Crane, Weapons, Iron Bone Training and much more. In the end the better fighter will win, but Shaolin has much more experience in seeing tons of attacks form different angles.. so it would be harder to surprise a shaolin practitioner in general and the iron body training helps take the few hits that do make it through.

While the analogy seems correct anyone would have to start with the basics. Any system has it's own set of rules and philosophy and that is the priority to learn it correctly. Therefore basics must be taught first regardless of level. It's the whole idea of emptying your cup to learn. Yes do to their previous experience they might learn faster but at the same time they might have habits from other arts that would conflict with the wing chun system. Anyway, I just hope the guy teaching them knows what he's doing.

Wing chun is good if you master it well with physical sparrings. Dont ever just rely on dances. Do sparrings and you will be good at what you are doing. Take hits and practice whats lacking then you will be like bruce lee who later lefts wing chun. :D

Do you really think that awkward/robotic behavior is able to spar with the normal people? :) Tell you what, you let him know that we are looking for volunteers to debunk Wing Chun. Ask him if he's willing to volunteer for this documentary. We would use scientific and combative ways to prove that his Wing Chun (or all) is unscientific to begin with. We are from Asia too. There are people in Singapore, U.K. and U.S. who have heard about us and our findings. We even managed to persuade them into doubting Wing Chun. Because the world is more styled for boxing/mma then sure, wing chun may noy stand a chance. Since it is effective in places where kung fu is, like China. Every style is trying to be superior from the other, like Wing chun that was derived from Shaolin like the founder of wing chun did inorder to defeat the chinese army that knew kung-fu. How do yo think Martial arts are created? By finding the correct way to defend and strike from a certain attack. Today krav maga is effective because it is based on how moder people attack. If it was kung fu who knows... but it would be effective for times where kungfu was popular and used in battles.

I've been training chinese martial arts for 20 years (Wushu and Sanda), two of which were Wing Tsun with Javier Gutierrez, Victor Gutierrez's brother. I have used my knowledge on the street, including sports Wushu, and it worked. I am Wushu and Sanda coach. The most important thing is not what you know, but how you train and how you apply it. And you should know that going to the ground in a street fight It is suicide.
