The winged hussars were the deadliest cavalry in the history of humankind. They won most of the battles they fought, even when outnumbered by the enemy. The sight of the winged hussars inflicted fear in the hearts of opponents.
Their legendary status has been inscribed in people's minds to this day. Their unique design of attaching rear wings to their armor and using a hollow lance made them special in the eyes of the history.
No doubt the hussars will continue to inspire many for years to come.

Greetings from neighboring Serbia, country where fore mentioned light cavalry originally comes from. After the Turks conquered Serbia in 15th century our nobility and knights lost their lands, they offered their service as very experienced horsemen to Hungarian and Polish kings. At the beginning these knights were called simple RACOWIE, which means SERBS, because at that time our kingdom was known as RAS. In some frescos from the Serbian monasteries there are some pictures of Serbian medieval warriors decorated with white goose feathers. (Guska in Serbian means goose).

Hussars are a legendary unit of the Commonwealth, but the greatest fear and terror of the enemy in the east and west of Europe in the 17th century was aroused not so much by the Hussars as the Polish light cavalry called the Lisowczyks. Aleksander Lisowski was a winged Hussar from the Dutchy of Lithuania , Orsza - county near Smoleńsk. He served under hetman Chodkiewicz. After the battle of Kirholm the troops weren't still paid for 3 months as the collection of taxes went slow. Aleksander and 60 other winged hussars rebelled and began to rob Estonian villages breaking Chodkiewich's order to leave local people alone. Chodkiewicz had to punish him so he sentenced Aleksander to leave the whole of the Commonwealth. Lisowski just came home After a few years Chodkiewicz agreed to form regiments of volunteers who were allowed to fight by themselves witout any remunaration from the royal treasury, They were thus allowed to loot civilians of other countries. One of the Lisowski volunteers was Stefan Czarniecki some time after the Lisowski's death.

The interesting story about the battle of Vienna of 1683 is that the Polish forces had to cut their way through the forest and cross the hills surrounding Vianna to create a path. It took them days, dragging 50 cannons. Before the order was given to attack the worriers had to spent the whole night on their horses not knowing when the command would come, no sleep, an issue of urgency. Kara Mustafa the commander ot the Ottamans was close to taking Vienna. The Lithuaniens did not make it on time athough their were on their way. The historians are saying that there were 11 thousand of them. John the III Sobieski the commander of the coalition which inlucded Germans and Austriens ordered an attack at 12:00 noon. Initially 3 thousand Hussars attacked the Ottomans.

On the 'Polish roll' , a panoramic painting created in 1605 and portraying the arrival of Costance of Austria to Krakow, where she was to marry Sigismund III Vasa, then king of Poland. This Painting shows Polish cavalrymen including some using a single wing mounted to the back of the saddle (most notably the royal standard-bearer). This painting, a first depiction of winged hussars, by the way, is a good proof that the wings were most definitely used during parades for decorative purposes. Charles Ogier, visiting Poland in 1635 wrote wrote about military parade: 'Hussars, the most prestigious nobility on superior horses, in richly ornate armours; skins of lions, tigers and leopards flow from their backs. They carry enormously long lances with pennants. On their shoulders they carry imposing wings'. On the other hand, Guillaume de Beauplan, cartographer and engineer in Polish service in the years 1630-1648 left many information about Polish troops, including hussars but he never mentions wings. This corroborates the theory that wings were used predominantly on parades, but were used sparsely (or at least not that often) in actual combat.@@extrage3061

On a painting 'Battle of Klushino') created by Polish painter Szymon Boguszowicz in 1620, most hussars do not have characteristic wings and several figures in the central part of the painting are shown with black feathers adorning their backs. This is an important clue that wings were not used universally, as the painting renders most military details quite precisely and was created under the supervision of hetman (chief of command) Stanisław Żółkiewski who was commanded Polish troops during the battle. Hussars are also portrayed without wings on the 'Battle of Kircholm 1605 AD' by Pieter Snayers whose representation of the military equipment is considered accurate. In rare cases when hussars are depicted with wings, they are most often shown mounted to the saddle rather than the armour. Woodcut in the book 'Wake-up call for glorious sons of Polish Crown to the military service' by Wojciech Rakowski shows very detailed and accurate depiction of Polish hussar, but the only feathers are seen on the helmet. Also Szymon Starowolski in his book 'Eques Polonus' published in 1628 wrote 'hussars put feathers on their heads and heads of their horses alike".@@extrage3061

This is not true, the winged hussars never were not outdated even during their disolution. They would still have been very effective during the Napoleonic wars and would become obsolete after that. The reason to polish defeats was almost always corruption by the nobles who held most of the power since they elected the king of the commonwealth. The reason the hussars were disbanded was because the government could not fund them and because the polish nobility became more Western European and abandoned the more medieval noble traditions. We saw the hussars dominate much larger army’s many times and these armies (mainly Swedes) had some of the best modern weapons.

technically, the winged hussars were medium, not heavy cavalry. Their armor was expensive and incredibly effective, but quite light and partially covering the body compared to the armor used by reiters. Also horses were more fast and durable than heavy ones. Usually in history, medium cavalry was a compromise between deadly heavy cavalry and maneuverable light cavalry. The phenomenon of winged hussars was that they had the advantages of both, but none of disadvantages

Heavy cav was called Pancerni. Hussars were lighter to catch up with Tatars. Less armor especially in the back was compensated by animal skins. They had extremely long lances hollow inside to make them lighter and not bend. Lances were longer than swiss square foot soldiers pikes and packed a heavy punch as lance was attached to the saddle so it carried the whole mass of a horse and rider. Wing or wings were protecting the neck from tatar arcanes or blade cuts. Feathers were making noise startling enemy horses.

yes, Poles lost the battle of kaliszow in 1702, husaria charged at Swedish cavalry and easily defeated them, but couldn't reach the infantry hidden behind field fortifications, so charge was unsuccessful. Polish army lost 80 people killed in this battle, hard to say that it was heavy defeat. Lubomirski didn't want to support king's victory and decided to withdraw his army leaving Saxons on the battlefield, and they lost the battle. It showed how Poland was divided and that was the reason why Poland collapsed nearly 100 years later. Not many people now what happened at Kaliszow but it is worth to investigate, because it's an interesting part of polish history.
@Leaffordes
@Leaffordes Жыл бұрын
What you're describing is merely the Polish view of the battle; much of what you're saying is not supported by either Swedish or Saxon accounts. "husaria charged at Swedish cavalry and easily defeated them" - While the hussars might've beaten back a few Swedish companies of horse, the Swedish attack on the left flank slowed down mainly due to their commander, Frederick IV of Gottorp, being killed by artillery fire. "but couldn't reach the infantry hidden behind field fortifications" - The Swedish infantry was not protected by field fortifications; the report of Cheval-de-Frise being present with their infantry is from a Polish source, not a Swedish one. The hussars were most likely stopped by musket volleys. "Polish army lost 80 people killed in this battle" - If I'm not mistaken, this is taken from a Swedish diary in which 80 Poles were reportedly counted on the battlefield. I'm not sure this number includes losses during the rout, or dead soldiers brought from the battlefield; as far as I know, there are no official Polish records of losses? "Lubomirski didn't want to support king's victory and decided to withdraw" - Then why did he launch several smaller attacks on the Swedes just before that? This is usually done to create openings for the rest of the army to exploit (if successful). But you're telling me he didn't want to win despite attacking? Sounds like an excuse to me.. "his army leaving Saxons on the battlefield, and they lost the battle." - According to Saxon accounts, some Poles either ran into the Saxon lines during the rout, or were really close to doing so; not at all an orderly retreat as some Polish sources describe it. The Poles also lost a few guns to the Swedes, suggesting it was a rout. "Not many people now what happened at Kaliszow but it is worth to investigate" - Have you investigated Swedish and Saxon accounts of the battle at all? Or are you only sticking with the Polish version of events?
@kacpersokoowski5208

@@Leaffordes There is no reason to believe that the Swedish versions are more credible than the Polish ones. And, probably, they are not even in a strong contradiction. "Lubomirski didn't want to support king's victory and decided to withdraw" That is a fact. There are many sources that make it sure. Maybe, the unsuccessful charge was the factor that facilitated his decision. But it wasn't some terrible defeat. In the famous Battle of Klushino (1610) there were 9 unscuccessful charges before the 10th one, the successful one. And surely much bigger losses than only 80 killed hussars. According to Wikipedia, Lubomirski used only 12% of his forces in the Battle of Kliszów. Maybe his retreat wasn't completely orderly, but it wasn't a desperate escape, either (f.e. you claim that Poles could carry away some of their dead. It is quite possible. However, you cannot collect your dead, if you completely lost the field... Isn't that so?).

@@kacpersokoowski5208 "There is no reason to believe that the Swedish versions are more credible than the Polish ones." - This is a straw man; I never said that the Swedish version is more credible. "That is a fact. There are many sources that make it sure." - If you have a credible source indicating that it's true, written [most preferably by Lubomirski himself] before the battle took place (obviously), I'd like to see it. I would be very happy if you proved it to me. "But it wasn't some terrible defeat." - Not terrible in terms of losses, obviously, but in terms of reputation it can be quite devastating (for an army of several thousand to retreat after merely 80 killed while the battle was far from decided). Their retreat certainly didn't put them in any higher regards in the view of the Swedes, that's for sure. "Lubomirski used only 12% of his forces in the Battle of Kliszów." - It was not entirely uncommon to use a small portion of your army to create openings, before launching a general attack to exploit them. Perhaps Lubomirski failed to create exploitable openings? "you claim that Poles could carry away some of their dead" - No, I never "claimed" this..

@@Leaffordes True, you never said that the Swedish version is more credible but intimated it when you state "much of what you're saying is not supported by either Swedish or Saxon accounts". "While the hussars might've beaten back a few Swedish companies of horse, the Swedish attack on the left flank slowed down mainly due to their commander, Frederick IV of Gottorp, being killed by artillery fire". Really, they are under artillery fire yet slow down making themselves easier targets and likely to suffer higher losses as a result. You obviously have never experienced battle or would not make such crazy statements. Apart from that after several encounters with the Winged Hussars the Swedish would never have sent just a few companies of horse as they knew they would get slaughtered. "Not terrible in terms of losses, obviously, but in terms of reputation it can be quite devastating". Winged Hussars were already on the decline due to new tactics and weaponry which negated much of the Winged Hussars tactics/effectiveness. "The Swedish infantry was not protected by field fortifications". "The hussars were most likely stopped by musket volleys". Musket volleys had never previously stopped the Winged Hussars and had always proven to be ineffective against the Winged Hussars. And Swedish infantry did indeed have field fortifications protecting their infantry as it was one of the tactics that prevented the Winged Hussars from doing direct charges thereby negating much of the Winged Hussars advantage against infantry.

@@saintsone7877 "but intimated it when you state 'much of what you're saying is not supported by either Swedish or Saxon accounts'." - No? What I implied is that sources should be applied from all sides, not just the Polish [or Swedish for that matter] one. "Really, they are under artillery fire yet slow down ... making themselves easier targets and likely to suffer higher losses as a result. You obviously have never experienced battle" - What are you even talking about? Their commander was killed, so the attack lost momentum - how is this unbelievable to you? Are you confusing charge with attack? Because they're not always the same.. Also, I don't really care if you have battle experience or not; if your arguments are weak, your background won't save you. "Apart from that after several encounters with the Winged Hussars the Swedish would never have sent just a few companies of horse as they knew they would get slaughtered." - There were quite a lot of companies of horse in the left-flank Swedish attack (I've never stated otherwise), but the hussars alone did not beat them all back, did they? Please, do your best effort to understand the text you're quoting to spare me from having to repeat or dumb it down for you. "Winged Hussars were already on the decline due to new tactics and weaponry which negated much of the Winged Hussars tactics/effectiveness." - What does this have to do with the text you quoted, about reputation? Are you saying reputation didn't matter for the Polish Crown Army? "Musket volleys had never previously stopped the Winged Hussars and had always proven to be ineffective against the Winged Hussars." - Musket volleys always ineffective against Winged hussars? If such a deluded statement is your belief, I'm not going to waste time arguing. "Swedish infantry did indeed have field fortifications protecting their infantry" - If you're so certain that the (advancing) Swedes had field fortifications protecting their infantry as the hussars charged, then I guess you have a Swedish first-hand source confirming it? The reason Poland was able to stay in Moscow was not due to the military strength or tremendous superiority. Poland used disagreements, bribe and lies planted between corrupted Russian aristocracy fighting for power. On the contrary it did not take even full royal army to take them down - two Russians citizens with uprising groups were able to clear Polaks out. And then Poland was after the Russian power for two hundred years afterwards. Also in the video they show a lot about of Ukrainian kozaks who should not be considered as Polaks since a lot of arguments between were often present. During Socialist years polish tourists were coming to USSR to buy TV's, silverware and drink vodka. Nothing else was left. Now they grow decent apples and housars are dead....

The combat record of the Winged Hussars stands for itself. In 1577 a massive charge of this ultra-heavy cavalry unit smashed a German army from Danzig, blitzing into the teeth of a 12,000 man force and crushing them until all that remained was a well-trampled patch of red where the enemy army once used to be. Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth losses in the battle totaled about 88 men, and most of those clowns weren't even Hussars. In 1601, a thousand Hussars defeated a Swedish cavalry force four times that size. At the Battle of Kircholm four years later, the Hussars (whose commanders' completely badass motto was "Kill First, Calculate Later"), sent 1,000 lancers in a charge against 11,000 Swedish infantrymen and cannons for some reason, and incredibly, despite the ridiculous idiocy of sending your elite troops on such an impossible mission, the friggin' Hussars jammed their poles (OMG AWESOME PUN FTW) into anything they could find and not only emerged victorious, but utterly slaughtered their opponents army, hacking the broken infantry units into giblets as they fled the field. Amazingly, that wasn't even the most impressive shit this mobile last stand accomplished in its proud heritage as the Commonwealth's premier exporter of busted-up faces. At the Battle of Klushino in 1610, the Hussars were outnumbered ten to one, and still somehow came out on top, utterly annihilating an army of 40,000 Swedes and Russians with just 4,000 lancers. What might be even more awesome then the Winged Hussars' much-deserved reputation as seemingly-invincible shit-wreckers is their completely over-the-top awesome battle gear. These guys went with the heaviest armor they could find, decking themselves out in fully-articulated plate mail at a time when most European armies were switching away from breastplates and over to firearms, but these ferocious warriors didn't even give a crap about rushing at state-of-the-art muskets with hand-to-hand combat weapons. Their primary implement of facial demolition was a lightweight (yet still completely insane) 19-foot lance capable of outreaching even the most well-endowed infantry spear hedges, and after they splintered that up the asses of their foes, the Hussars could fall back on pistols, a dagger, and one of two different types of swords. Why they needed two different swords is beyond the scope of my knowledge, but I'm pretty sure that I support it.www.badassoftheweek.com/hussars.html
@kanonierable
@kanonierable Жыл бұрын
One of the two swords had a long straight blade, useful for stabbing an enemy from horseback, the other was the well known curved Polish szabla, that is more usefull for hacking and slashing an unarmoured opponent. Stabbing an adversary is generally more deadly than cutting someone, which often leaves a wound that won't incapacitate quickly enough to prevent the soldier that was hit from fighting back and eventually killing you. The need for the straight, stabbing sword comes from the fact that the lance will most likely break at some point so you want to have a backup that still can make use of the momentum of your galloping horse, to continue impaling foes. The curved szabla comes into play when you routed the enemy and chase behind him, hacking and slashing at the heads and the backs of fleeing men and thus preventing any attempt to stop and reorganise as a cohesive and effective fighting unit. The advantage of the stab verses the cut is why most cavalry forces at the later part of the 19th century untill the first and even the second world war changed to longer, only slightly curved sabers. The question of cutting vs. stabbing was a hotly debated topic among the experts of the day and it was decided by examining statistics. One significant change in the armament of cavalry was the revival of the lance, that had mostly come out of use in the 18th century. Again it were the Polish with their famous Ulans that set such a shining example for the advantage of a properly used lance that Napoleon decided to integrate them in his army. Well a lot of things could be said about cavalry, but I'll leave it at that. I am Swiss so I probably should have told you all about the might and glory of the infantry! But we know from history, that the exhausted Swiss mercenairies, tough and well paid professional soldiers, that made up a considerable part of the defenders of Vienna against the Ottoman siege, were more than happy to learn about the arrival of the Polish and allied cavalry under the great Jan Sobieski!

@@kirgan1000 The Hussars never really got the memo, though, and they'd still charge into battle, decked out in armor that could take a bullet or two and close the distance before their enemy got a chance to reload. The Hussars eventually got their own firearms, which meant their enemies now had to deal with a heavily armored Hussars charging at them with spears, swords, war hammers and rifles. 4. They Put the Battle of Thermopylae to Shame Everyone praises the Spartans for pitting 300 troops against the mighty Persian army. But when you start looking deeper into it, you'll quickly realize there are plenty of things they left out for the sake of the comic (and, later, film adaption), like the actual numbers of Greeks aiding them and how poorly trained most of the Persians were. The Spartans were bad*sses, yes, but some elements of their most famous tale are questionable. Want to know who undoubtedly pulled off a heroic victory when faced with 62-to-1 odds? The Polish Winged Hussars. A 400-strong Hussar unit was being attacked on two fronts by the 25,000+ Crimean Khanate forces, and they were backed into the tiny village of Hodow. The Hussars had only a single night to turn the town into a fortress, to defend themselves with no supplies and no backup. The Crimean forces raided the half-defended town and ran out of ammunition so fast that they needed to turn enemy arrows fired at them into improvised rounds for their long rifles. Six hours of intense fighting later, and the Crimean Khanate started to retreat. The dust settled, and thousands of the Khanate Tatars lay dead on the floor while less then a hundred Hussars had fallen.

That's not the only purpose the wings were for. The rustling sound they made was acually very distressive to the Enemy Cavalry horses, sometimes the horses would acually flee without their riders from the sound. At least that's what i heard from my late grand-grandfather, the story of our ancestors that he learnt from his grandparents, wich goes on to this day. These angels of Death were not only feared by the people, but the steeds as well, not only the wing sounds making the horses distressed, but also the Leopard skin, creating a smell simmilar to a Leopard, scaring the animals even more.

One fact u missed is that wings evolved from eastern warfare where Cossacks and Tatars light and highly mobile cavalry used so called ARKAN which is kind of lasso to pull down heavier enemy rider from its horse. Simple stick or double above his head attached by leather stipes to back plate of rider or to saddle and undercutted for weakening spot prevent that highly effectively. Later that evolved into wings as symbol and psychical terror weapon. Polish Szlachta was very haughty at end. Otherwise great job.

wings are a myth and the hussars did not use them during the battle, they were a symbol of the Polish white eagle and used only during parades, however, as to the noise that some people say, which was supposedly produced by the wings, it was caused by pennants on the lances, unfortunately I do not remember the specific name those pennants

On the 'Polish roll' a panoramic painting created in 1605 and portraying the arrival of Costance of Austria to Krakow, where she was to marry Sigismund III Vasa, then king of Poland. This corroborates the theory that wings were used predominantly on parades, but were used sparsely (or at least not that often) in actual combat.@@mahu5766

What? At the moment of screaming, the sound of horses' hooves or the screams of these people, do you think you would hear the rustling of feathers? To be precise, there was only one wing and it had an aesthetic meaning. And they did not protect the hussar from the saber. Hussars had tiger or wolf skins on their backs, and this protected them from wounds on their backs.

The wings concealed the actual number and arrangement of the army in the next rows. Thanks to this, the commander of the Hussars could hide the concentration of a larger number on one of the wings and break the enemy with a quick maneuver. The second tactic of using the wings is to send the front charge in a loose formation and only 30-50m behind it the next rows. After the first ineffective volley of infantry, successive rows of horsemen accelerated and filled the vacant places in the formation. This, combined with a very long lance, resulted in the total annihilation of any infantry or cavalry formation of that time.

@wtflol2721
@wtflol2721 Жыл бұрын
There was some way of drilling holes inside the lance. It was contained and kept secret from foreign countries. The hussars' attack involved a strike in one row (formation). One group hit the enemy and went to the sides and then turned to the rear. There she replenished. And she struck again. Therefore, a small number of hussars were comparable to a large standing army. Sometimes horses were exchanged and new lances were certainly taken. One hussar could lose (break) 6-7 lances in one fight. Losses among hussars were often negligible. When the defense collapsed, the enemies often panicked and began to flee, then different weapons were used. Koncerzy, ice axes, long sabers and pistols (which were inaccurate and single shot at that time)

Battle of Hodów In June 1694, Muslim Tatar troops invaded Polish territory with the intention of plundering the countryside for loot and capturing prisoners for ransom. Polish troops sent to stop them consisted of seven hussar banners and armored ones from the fortress of Okopy Holy Trinity and the Lair of the Virgin Mary, about 400 men in total; [9] historian Mirosław Nagielski estimates 100 hussars and 300 tankmen. [10] Tatar numbers have been estimated at 25,000 to 70,000, of which 40,000 is the most cited number. [11] About 40,000 [12] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hod%C3%B3w

Very very good video! Only... the text is out of sync with the speech in the movie and occupies too big a part of the screen. Quite a waste for such a splendid production. But again, my compliments!

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania, along with the Kingdom of Poland, jointly formed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Winged Hussars were a notable cavalry unit within the Commonwealth, and members from both the Polish and Lithuanian territories served as part of this elite military formation during the 16th and 17th centuries. The LOTR Cavalry charge is supposedly based on their attack in Vienna.

Yes, that is actually correct. Tolkien said that the charge of Rohirim was inspired by the massive charge of winged hussars during the siege of Vienna, interesting pundit

02:08 "The first mention of the Polish Hussars appears in the early 1500s. Initially the Hussars in the service of the Polish king were Hungarians and exiled Serbs, mainly lancers. After their defeat by the Turks in 1389, Serbs carried on their spirited fight against the Ottomans in the ranks of other armies. The etymology of the word Hussar is atributed both to the Serb and the Hungarian languages. The etymology of the word hussar stems from the Serbian word gusar meaning wanderer/brawler. In Hungarian: huszar - 20 fiefdoms The Polish Hussars were modelled on the Hungarian Black Army, which was made up of well-paid, full-time mercenaries, who were mainly ... Bohemians, Germans, Serbs, Poles, and only later on also Hungarians. By the middle of the 16th century Polish hussars transformed into a heavily armored shock cavalry. Wings and leopard skins were used by Serbs first, which later influenced Polish Winged Hussars."

Bah. On September 12, 1683, the fighting at Vienna had gone on all day. The Ottomans were caught between and thoroughly roughed up by the mixed forces of Germany, Saxony, Bavaria, Baden and Polish/Lithuanian Infantry. There were even other tiny entities involved and a great many mercenaries. Vienna had provided a generous incentive for the resuce attempt - something which otherwise would not have happened. At 4:00 p.m., the first hussars made their appearance: 120 of them. They made a charge, successfully, but had to withdraw due to casualties. It wasn't until 6:00 p.m., late in a fall day, with the Ottomans already exhausted, that Sobieski led his 3000 hussars and 15,000 in their famous charge. They headed straight for the best source of loot, namely the headquarters and camp area, and crushed it. What would have been a retreat turned into a rout. The Viennese, having seen the hussars emerge from a wood, sallied out for the aftermath; somethign which profitted them well. Afterwards, it was noted that the infantry won the day and the hussars took all the credit. But not the loot. While there was plenty to go around, historically speaking, the Germans and the Viennese probably gathered the most. Vienna was never threatened by the Ottomans again.

In response to this victory of the hussars, the Austrians thanked Poland by sharing Poland's share in 1792!... During the First World War, the Russian army came to the gates of Vienna. The Ottoman army under the command of Nuri Pasha came to the aid of Vienna and chased the Russians to the east of the Vistula River. However, during the same war years, when the British defeated the Ottomans in the Middle East and captured Jerusalem, the Viennese also thanked the Ottomans by celebrating this as a holiday... I wish we had not saved Vienna!...
