For those who don’t understand the massive chunk of fiberglass, compare it to rally cars having slats under their wings, or drift cars having large end plates in their wings. In drift cars they use it to slow down while sliding sideways because air resistant same with rally but they use the wind resistance to help them straighten out, same with these cars when it gets sideways around a turn the massive plexiglass but keeps it from getting too much angle and helps the car straighten out when returning to a straight away. Simple aerodynamics

reading the comments below about the wing not helping them go faster ? these people have not seen them in person or seen the track record with wing or w/o . i saw a winged late model go 10.80 around crystal raceway when the non winged (same driver and car minus the wing ) went about 3 seconds slower

Indeed, they get in and out through the top and this is why these cars were "topless". For those of you who don't remember the days of the wedge cars (that's what these are called), this is how the topless 100 race came to be. It started back in the 80s when these cars were popular and it was a wedge car race. Nowadays they still run it "topless" but it makes no sense anymore because they don't run the side boards. Also on some of the cars the side board on the driver side could be lowered and raise to allow the driver to enter the car. Also often times the side boards would be limited to only the rear deck lid, from the rear of the driver compartment back and the nose area of the front. This way it was a non-issue. Also these are not called "wings" because they aren't wings. They are called "side boards". And the term wedge car was said to actually refer to the fact that when they pitched the car sideways into the corner, the aerodynamic forces on the side boards loads the left rear tire in the same way that jacking "wedge" into the suspension does.

That must have been a boring race to watch with only 7 cars taking the green. Those car with the side boards are really fast, you don't dare lift in the corners, or you will spin out. I saw cars like that back in the early 80's, the track got paved, and we got to see a different kind of racing, once a year the winged Super Modifieds came to town, never saw anything like them.

If your left wheel isn't on the ground your not going fast latemodel technology has gotten away from that concept with no billboards. It's part of it we can do it know due to technical advances in shook building and chassis setup
