I mean I’m playing a chaotic neutral Paladin (tho he’s an Oathbreaker so it makes sense lol). I’ve always loved the idea of an Oathbreaker Paladin and I’m so happy my Dm let me play as one. My party almost never splits, but for some reason, they always let me out of their sight. It got to a point where our party leader tied a rope around my neck and lead me around on it. He said I could no longer be trusted. We went through four towns like that, and I eventually needed to ask for help. I was over-encumbered, and they could only stare on in disbelief at how I'd managed to steal so much, even under the circumstances. Their mistake was thinking that putting me on a leash meant they could take their eyes off me.

(I also do the same with everyone's equipment so the player can't say I am biased, though it tends to be more helpful when used on others, like if your "can't tell which way is up" barbarian is lost just activate the homing beacon)

True story where the barbarian learned the hard way never split the party. We had just defeated a powerful enemy and the rest of the party was tired, beaten, and escorting the 18 prisoners we found to safety. We voted for a rest except the barbarian at 9 hp who went off in their own. She found a room where 4 monks where and they rushed her, she only killed one before they killed her the cleric (me) was so done with her shit I did my characters motives instead of helping her by standing in front of the prisoners with my shield to protect them. Never let the thief out of sight? Well, I mean it doesn't really matter when your thief is a Kitsune... more specifically a Kitsune that can not only steal better than you can watch her but, uses magic to assist herself in the act... Ah.. Dominate Person has got to be the best spell in the game.... it is also very fun watching allies and enemies a-like do your bidding all because he said.. "Roll a will save for me right quick pal.." In the end, I, the thief, became party leader... and the Barbarian became my personal pack-mule for all the stolen goods and property. The guards later caught up to me... it wasn't pretty once the Barbarian realized I'd been controlling him the entire campaign.

The only time my party has ever been efficient was after we split the party. Myself (the swashbuckling rogue), the paladin, and the ranger got high on meth supplied by our cleric and nearly burned the town down in the process of forming a cult around my previously deceased fire-loving sorcerer. The druid went to an unscorched part of the town and built a treehouse, while the monk went off and singlehandedly did what we went there to do and managed to avoid being tied to a burning stake. Upon typing this, I realize that an 83% chaotic party is probably not the best for furthering the plot, but it is great for impromptu poodle sacrifices.

This is strangely true. I went one way to protect a dying ally (I was the only healer, but I was very dedicated to the role and maxed out on healing powers). but then a bunch of wraiths appeared from the opposite corridor, ganging up on my team mates and taking their health down to dangerously low levels. I had to take three opportunity attacks to make a mad dash to save the rest of my party. Next session; DM says the fighter who put everything he had into damage instead of tanking (who was our only defender) was the best player. This was a 4e game just so you know, but our DM was pretty harsh, and I literally had two turns to save every single ally aside from one, as the place we were in stopped people from rolling death saving throws, three turns always meant death if you were down.

Actually, one time splitting the party was accidental but advantageous. We were in a cave of constant changes and illusions, escorting a prisoner to the other side. If you "died" in the cave, you were really knocked unconscious and teleported somewhere else in the cave where you'd wake up. We got our butts handed to us by a minotaur, which resulted in me and the prisoner making it to the exit, one member finding a dragon's hoard, and solving 3 riddles to get buttloads of loot that we split evenly, another two finding a map of the cave that changed as the cave did, and the last coming to terms with his annoying, acid-spewing intelligent bag by the time we found him. Good times, good times...

Morgana Jordanson No but your group sounds like mine if they can't make rational decisions. I know of two people in my group who consider being able to actually have their characters survive longer than a few sessions. Me and the person who plays bards all the time, the only issue with this is I am typically a wizard, rogue, or sorcerer depending on what we need so the rest of our group leaves the two people not meant to fight alone being the only useful ones as they do whatever crazy thing comes into their head. Point in case I was fighting of a group of bandits from our cart sneak attacking like crazy, because I was first in initiative, and the guy playing as a BLIND monk decided to pull a trip maneuver... Titon Iridio I was a new DM and one of my party members, who was a Lvl 1 fighter, wanted to split off from the group to explore more of the dungeon so I said in my mind "ok this might make for a cool moment of bad assness that with make Mr man think I'm a great, exciting DM". so after wandering down the hall and opening a door to a room I sicked 2 sahuagins on him. I looked at their hp and damage and thought "ok maybe he can handle this" - nope, he was swinging his sword around like an idiot, missing most hits and I was rolling like the dice were rigged because I hit him almost every roll. they beat this poor man within an inch of his life, he was like a fucking battered spouse and the only thing that saved him was the rest of the party, who shouldn't have known he was in trouble, were like "I know that our characters don't know he is dying but we do not want to wait for him to roll another character so let's just go and save him". moral of the story: I learned the golden rule the hard way that day.
@titon79347 жыл бұрын
Weeaboocrusher it's weird, dice almost always betray the players that break that rule. a guy rolls three crits in a row with the rest of the party to back him up, but the moment he is the first in the room, two snake people nat 20 him with poison arrows. fortune, as it turns out, does not favor the bold.

Aw. It's too bad that so many gamers feel this way (and that so many Game Masters enforce this idea). Some of the best tabletop times I've had with my players were with a Technocracy party in my old Mage: The Ascension campaign, where splitting the party was A) a common occurrence, and B) usually the key to success. "Okay, we have eight minutes to find this antimatter bomb. Agent Echoes! Keep leaning on that desk sergeant we captured; he's bound to know something. Dolph! You and Helsen search the power plant; pay particular attention to any reactors you find. I'm taking Deepwell and Applebot to search the tower from the ground floor up. Contact me _immediately_ if any of you find anything. Let's move out!" Splitting the party can also be great for those times when someone in the party is walking into something big and hairy but doesn't realize it.... *DM:* "And there, embedded in the stone tree, is the Stone of Azrabbar, right where the druidic text said it would be." *Joe Player:* "Kargath takes his adamantite dagger and pries the stone out of the tree." *DM:* "Kargath's unbreakable blade slips behind the mystic stone, and with a twist of the blade, the stone begins to come loose amid a shower of broken pebbles. Cutting back to Starkad. Starkad, the druid is still chained into the throne where you left him, but his emotion has made an unexpected change from anticipation to glee." *John Player:* "Starkad slaps the druid across his jowls and asks him, 'What's so funny?'" *DM:* "Shaking his head to ease the sting, his glee ascends to cackling. 'I lied. The Stone of Azrabbar is not a _conduit_ for necromantic power; it's an inhibitor! My forefathers butchered twelve druids from the Circle of the White Rose and took that grove for their own, but the earth recoiled in vengeance and began to vomit forth the corpses of the slain! So my grandfather's grandfather set the Stone of Azrabbar in that tree to stop the vengeful dead from rising and consuming anything in their path, then petrified the tree so that none could remove it...none but a man with an unbreakable blade, mayhap.'" *Joe Player:* "Oh...shit." *DM:* "Cutting to Kargath. Kargath, to your delight, the Stone of Azrabbar pops free from its granite moorings and plops right into the palm of your hand. But no sooner have you tucked the stone into your satchel than the earth violently shifts beneath your feet with a bone-chilling wail from beyond! Roll a Reflex Save against DC 12 to stay standing." *Joe Player:* "Oh...double shit." *DM:* "Also, get ready to roll for initiative, because the roiling topsoil just unearthed a dozen gaunt and pallid faces with eyes of green flame, and they're _all_ turning to glare hatefully at you. Now, let's see that Reflex Save...." Good times, right? :)
@Sandro23410 жыл бұрын
Good times indeed. I actually had an instance where another player managed to find a map and maneuver his way through a pretty treacherous area after ducking into a crawlspace: without his expert thief role-playing we would have stayed locked up in some dungeon awaiting execution by royal guard :( The rationale he gave us after-the-fact was that there wasn't enough time to inform the party... and we all owe our lives to him for that (and realistically we weren't going to fit the party in there anyway): he stayed there and our DM switched between scenes of our party in the dungeon (chatting, trying to escape unsuccessfully via persuasion, etc) and our thief not 20 feet above us, skulking through shadows and avoiding guards (aside from a single sleeping stealth-kill, that is). It allowed one of the characters in our party that usually spent most of his time in the background to literally make-or-break our situation. He alone held the key to our salvation, and that is exactly why a well-placed party split can make for some super satisfying tabletop sessions, provided the players aren't too timid about being on their own (although that could be hilarious in the right circumstances, heh).
@lordofedges64879 жыл бұрын

The trick to effective thiefing is to not take everything. If you skim a coin or two each time you open a chest or loot a body it adds up fast and usually the party is none the wiser when you offer to buy the party drinks with said coin. Also important is to use that coin for the benefit of the party so when you are invariably caught you can just claim you were keeping it as a party nest egg for when they needed it. That's the route my Kenku Bard/Rogue takes. He's also managed to convince one of our party members to give them a ruby studded gold necklace that he now uses when he wants to make an impression. (He also borrows my previous character's skull cape and a Young Black Dragon's skull that our Sorcerer fashioned into a helm.) It's a sight to behold seeing a four foot tall bird draped in skulls and gold going to parley with a band of Troglodytes.

Alexander Palmer sounds a bit like some of my old play groups. Yet the craziest part is we normally did win. in fact most fights didn't taker more then a round or two and we hardly got touched or not touched at all. well unless it was the DM's character who always seemed to get severely injured or almost die in 70 to 90% of all fights (really bad luck. And bad rolls. Plus in other none D&D games he cared more about character back story and character concept then making a fully working character. A lot of almost NPC characters then fully flushed out PC characters. it was not as bad in D&D as other games. in D&D his character was not always badly hurt. just the only one hurt or more hurt then the rest of the characters). We at level 4 (just three maybe four characters) often took out three level 6 CR monsters. in one or two rounds and often taking no hits or only one hit with only low to medium damage (never more then 10 to 15 points on characters that could have up to 30 to 40 HP or more. Even when I played a wizard (which I often did) I had around 20 to 25 HP minimum and didn't take more the 15 points of damage per fight. a quick healing spell or potion and any injured part members were up to move on to the next encounter. so instead of doing one maybe two fights a night of playing we did four or six. Which leveled us up fast and gave us lots of treasure which allowed us to get better gear and more potions which made it even worse because we took even less damage if we were hit, we killed even faster and easier and we didn't have to worry as much about healing spells meaning we could use those slots for more attack or defence spells meaning even more fights per game night.

Jacob Parsons A Dungeon Master is a Game Master who runs a Dungeons & Dragons game, just like a Storyteller is a Game Master who runs pretty much any White Wolf game, and a Judge is a Game Master who runs Marvel Superheroes. "Game Master" is the generic, universal catch-all term for whoever's running a roleplaying game.

@LordNumbnutsthe1st5 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, it's really up to your group/DM: if you/he/she can maintain a good balance of play time between the different "factions" for lack of a better term, go bananas! The one group of D&D/PF I played in with a split party had the rogue spending the balance of the split time "on camera" while the rest of us just kinda sat there annoyed about the wight he found... AAAand then 30-60 min later we got to lose multiple party members to the damn thing thanks to cramped cabin space giving us massive penalty conditions... *sigh*.

So me and my group wandered into a cave, one of the party members was a halfling thief, and he was a small-ass motherfucker. Anyways, we walk past a small crack in the wall of the cave, for some reason the halfling guy wanted to go inside and see if there was any treasure or secret room, so he went in. My group didn't want to wait for him so we continued into the cave. The halfling ends up getting stuck in that crack in the cave, and to make things worse, rats came outta nowhere and started eating the poor halfling. My group rushes over to the hole in the wall, but we couldn't fit inside to save him, so we end up watching him get murdered. The DM had a little pity and let us pull him out of the crack. We looted his body and I found a fucking rare dagger that I (thought) lost, but I realize he stole it from me. I had no remorse for him LOL

***** One of the things i hate about lawful stupid paladins is when they refuse any reward for a job because it is "for the greater good of the..." and or get you into a stupid quest for the same reason. "No we can't go loot the red dragons lair, we must give that treasure to the church and orphans. But instead we must go save a village near the swamps from an army of trolls." when i reply as the thief, "Um, you realize there are like five of us right?" to which the idiot will inevitably reply. "We shall prevail for our cause is just." Long story short party wiped and campaign derailed, Morality does not make up for numbers and gear.

On our first session in our campaign my party split just after their first fight. It was the rogue who left to follow the trail that the attackers had come from while the rest of the party was very low on health (they were both human fighters). Long story short he ended up learning the hard way that you don’t go into a cave that is infested with goblins by yourself. He died almost as soon as he went inside.
