Santos distributed the money he received from the Eiffel flight prize to the poor in Paris, specially to pay off debt of poor families at that time, and to his employees/workers.

@@lunaazule1899 Yes, but why would this make a difference? Today, someone as wealthy as Santos-Dumont would have to have his accountants set up a non-profit charity to distribute the gift and the money would probably have to be given directly to the charity. This would be the procedure in the US. I am not sure about current tax laws in France.

in Oahu outside of the ARMY's Scoffield Barracks there is a street near the aviation brigade. The street is named Santos-Dumont. I'm probably the only soldier who appreciated the importance of the street name. But apparently someone else also appreciated Santos-Dumont. From Abu Firas to Santos Dumont, airborne all the way!!

in bagatelle, Paris, there has been a monument for Dumont since 1910. on this monument is written "FIRST AVIATION RECORD OF THE WORLD" for Dumont and under the supervision of the largest aeronautical authority in the world , french aeroclub. The first record for the wrights, May 1908 in the United States in extremely precarious flight without the ability to run and take off. flew 337 meters only.

@@glostermeteorwright2724 "BAGATELLE GAME FIELD HAS A MONUMENT. On the monument there is a plaque which reads First aviation record of the world. SB: There are long discussions of the monument and its plaques which were added later. Some of the statements are difficult to understand. Archdeacon and two other tycoons were interested in promoting French aviation. They came up with a rather strange limitation on what would count as an aviation record in France. The requirements included that the record must be set up and approved by members of the French Aeroclub. Wilbur set an altitude record in 1908 but the French Aeroclub would not approve it because he had used a derrick catapult. So he took off on skids and set the record again. Santos-Dumont set the first record that complied with FAI rules. In the Fall of 1904, the Wright Brothers had set 25 and 100 meter distance records. However, they didn't count because they were not public and were not witnessed by someone from the French Aero-club.

This Is a Great Documentary Santos was An Absolute Genius!! He wanted flight to bring the world together and instead he felt like it was used to betray him. As he was definitely a man of Peace so I can't imagine the amount of Guilt he felt seeing the airplane used to spill the Blood of his fellow man. He obviously blamed himself because without his efforts all those people would've lived. The Wright Brothers and others were a lot more responsibility for that and he ever was. The Wright Brothers Even Sold a Plane to the Military and obviously someone in Germany sold theirs to the German government. The fact that Santos was in the sanitarium was a sign of the depth of his guilt. Suicide or heart attack more like a combination of the two. I think it's more like he died of a broken heart long before his heart stopped beating. That such a sad ending to such a Brilliant Man but it does not take away from his Great accomplishments in any way. I have never really heard much about Mr. Santos before seeing this documentary on him! Thank you for posting this documentary on Mr. Santos. Actually the first person to create a powered and controlled aircraft of any kind even a dirigible is a heavier than air form of aircraft.

The Wrights had no problem sharing their ideas with other pioneers of aviation. They just wanted to be paid a royalty if money was made on plane production. I am not sure that they were successful. They successfully sued Glen Curtis but the Curtis company and the Wright company eventually merged. By that time, I don't think Orville Wright or Glen Curtis were associated with the companies. The Wrights were slow and methodical and took extra measures to make sure the pilot could survive a crash. They couldn't eliminate all risk. How can you call any of the early aviators "cowards.

So in your delusional mind an aircraft that can barely get 10 feet off the ground and can't make a controlled turn is somehow better than one that can be controlled and stay in the air for an extended period? It's so stupid. Go away with your bullshit feel good stories. The truth is the Wright brothers had a functional, controllable aircraft. Dumont had a pile of junk he could force 10 feet off the ground and fly in a straight line for a few seconds.

When Santos Dumont flew the 14 bis in 1906, the Wright Brothers had already built and flown three different heavier-than-air flying machines: 1) The 1903 Flyer, which took off under its own power and flew 852 feet (260 m) in 59 seconds; 2) The 1904 Flyer which also took off under its own power and was the first heavier-than-air craft to fly in a complete circle as well as covering a distance of 4,080 feet; and 3) the 1905 Flyer which also took off under its own power and flew a distance of twenty-four miles, including several circular maneuvers. On the other hand, Santos Dumont's 14 bis was essentially uncontrollable and was only capable of flying short distances in a straight line.

A true pioneer to be sure, but NOT "the real inventor, and pilot of the first airplane to fly on the sky in the world." He didn't even understand how a propellor works, based on his inefficient designs. He was still stuck with the belief that it worked like a paddle and apparently failed to understand it was actually a lifting surface, which was one of the Wright's lesser-known discoveries. Another fact: Santos Dumont's father was also an Engineer/Mathematician graduated in Europe. Santos Dumont was a bright individual, Engineer, Mathematician, Inventor, Artist, Entrepreneur, with an open mind to not just create the idea, but to make his own ideas practical, working, and real. Let's go a little further: Santos as a practical man, needed a watch that was at hand, without the need to take it from the pocket to use it while flying. Louis Cartier then, produced the first wristwatch called "Santos" in name of their friendship. And...The Arial Dinner by Santos at the Cafe de Paris with tables elevated to 7 feet high to experience dinning in the sky. .. just to illustrate who really IS!

@@mcamp9445 Your information is not entirely correct, as the wrigths did use a catapult, even in Europe and many flights with witnesses, there is no official record or photo after 1903. In fact, the centenary of the Flyer's flight in 2003 was, literally, a disaster, proving that without a catapult the 1903 version, considered the first flight, was not really a flight, but a glide with an engine! Furthermore, in 1908, Santos Dumont was already flying like the Flyer with his "Demoiselle", which he continued to improve until the next year and then start selling his designs without patents so that everyone could produce them!

Let's ask ourselves: Who contributed the most towards human flight 1. Birds, Orville, Wilbur, or Santos? Obviously human flight was an evolutionary process; and an international process too. The binary choice of "who was first to fly" just requires another question: "What is flight?" Answering that question (what is flight?) just means that your picking a point along an evolutionary line. It's arbitrary. There is no one time or technical invention that provides a boundary between "before flight" and "after flight". Picking such a point probably tells us more about what country your loyal to, and the kind of people you admire more than it tells us anything about the processes and techniques leading to human flight. Birds, Santos, Orville, Wilbur, and others overlap each other along the path to human flight. Who invented the computer? Who invented the electric guitar? These questions really try to answer the arbitrary question: Who gets the money?

Well said.. shame that as humans we need to keep milestones to interpret events, systems and pretty much anything.. we are always working with only the snapshots of reality so to speak.. I wonder if technology will liberate us from this curse.. or maybe the curse would be to hold every bit of information at the same time... we wouldn't be able to hold one thought and feeling at a time, we'd see it all.. Funny that the engine of our consciousness - our central nervous system - is always connected and yet the awareness that arises from it (us) can only hold one thought at a time. We were able to build information processing systems that sometimes can work in parallel, but each part is always holding one piece of information at a time. This is an element of a centralised architecture called Von Neumann architecture. The non-centralised approach, like our brain, is called non Von Neumann architecture and to my knowledge we suck at understanding it and aside from making babies I'm not even sure we ever produced such a machine. This leads to the question whether we are even able to think holistically in the first place. Maybe we emulate it only. If that is the case, then our fierce wish to choose milestones in order to understand the history of flight is very much understandable.

While Santos-Dumont claimed that he did not borrow anything from Lawrence Hargrave, the inventor of the box kite with a cambered control surface, the builder of Alberto's prototype readily admitted his debt to Hargrave. The plane had v-shaped box kite wings to maximize lift and stability. I had ailerons and a front rudder but they may not have been functional. In the photographs and films, the ailerons appear to be fluttering and the front rudder locked in its maximum position. The look-alike replica created and flown by Alan Calassa certainly had 3-axis control. Some of the small models could demonstrate 3-axis control in no-wind conditions. It original BIS-14 was not a practical flying machine but it was certainly a rigid wing craft consistent with the D-Archdeacon contest rules. Presidential Proclamation No. 6858 made by President William J. Clinton on December 13, 1995: "Ninety-two years ago, Orville Wright manned the first sustained and controlled, machine-powered flight in an airplane he designed and built with his brother Wilbur. This extraordinary journey, though only 12 seconds long, was the first great achievement of a partnership that revolutionized aviation and made remarkable contributions to aerodynamics, mechanical engineering, and practical flight techniques. The Wright brothers' pioneering efforts remain enduring examples of American ingenuity and perseverance.Today, the United States aviation industry helps to drive our economy and provides business and recreational opportunities to our citizens that were unthinkable just a century ago. Our reliance on air transit grows each year, challenging the aviation community and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to meet new safety and operational demands. Our air transportation system, already the safest and most efficient in the world, continues to improve. In fact, efforts are underway to craft reforms that enhance the efficiency of the FAA so that America's leadership in air transportation, begun with the Wright brothers' historic flight on December 17, 1903, can continue well into the next century. The Congress, by a joint resolution approved December 17, 1963 (77 Stat. 402; 36 U.S.C. 169), has designated December 17 of each year as "Wright Brothers Day" and has authorized and requested the President to issue annually a proclamation inviting the people of the United States to observe that day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. Now, Therefore, I, William J. Clinton, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 17, 1995, as Wright Brothers Day.In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this thirteenth day of December, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and ninety-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twentieth."

There is a transcript of Wings of Madness" I have not seen one for Brown's biased documentary. SB: What information could the wrights' have received from the alleged meeting with Whitehead that would aid them to complete their flyer? They were already aware of Lilienthal's work. 1st flight: 120 ft in 12 sec. 4th flight: 852 ft. (almost 300 yds.) ft. in close to 1 min. flight. How much can we trust the Wright Brothers' photographs? Any flight shorter than 300 ft. would be "just a hop". It only had to convince them that the design worked. Brown made an unsupported claim that Orville said the 1908 photo was a photo of the 1903 flight. Evidence for this claim iBs very important since it would suggest that Orville may have lied. The photo is of a 1908 flight with 2 passengers and an upright 4 engine. Brown provided no evidence that Orville claimed the photo was of the 1903 flight. This is important. SB: I think It was from a 1908 flight. There is a slight problem because the Wrights said that their practice flight was in a modified Wright Flyer III that had been converted to a 2 passenger plane. This could be true if they also added a Wright-Taylor upright 4 engine. No one has had any success flying an exact replica of the 1903 Wright flyer over 120 ft. They spent a million US$ duplicating the 1903 Wright Flyer I using tools and materials available to the Wright Brother. They were not successful in duplicating the 17Nov1903 flight conditions. There were at least two successful test flights of an exact replica but the strongest wind was only 15 mph, not over 21. On December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers made four flights, with the first lasting 12 seconds and covering 120 feet, the second around 12 seconds and 175 feet, the third around 15 seconds and 200 feet, and the longest, fourth flight lasting 59 seconds and covering 852 feet. The Wright Flyer (often retrospectively referred to as Flyer I and occasionally Kitty Hawk) was the first powered aircraft designed and built by the Wright brothers. The Wright Flyer's first flight on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk is recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the standard setting and record-keeping body for aeronautics and astronautics, as "the first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air powered flight". Fact.

After a single statement to the press in January 1904 and a failed public demonstration in May, the Wright Brothers did not publicize their efforts, and other aviators who were working on the problem of flight (notably Alberto Santos-Dumont) were thought by the press to have preceded them by many years. Indeed, several short heavier-than-air powered flights had been made by other aviators before 1903, leading to controversy about precedence (see Early flying machines). The Wrights, however, claimed to be the first of these which was "properly controlled." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wright_Flyer#The_influence_of_the_Flyer Controlled yes definitely, but for sure not the first ones to publicly fly without a catapult

3 exact replicas of the Wright's replica were made. At least one backup was needed in the case the first crashed in test flights at KittyHawk. Two successful 400+ ft. test flights were completed about 30 days before December 17, 2013 at 10am. On those days there was a good 20+ mph headwind. The weather on the Centennial date lacked the required headwinds. The pilot, Kevin Kochersberger, can be heard to say in the video, "I couldn't get the wind" Without a headwind, the original flyer cannot achieve lift-off in 60 ft. I think I would have built a 200 ft. track. I wonder if that would have worked with only a 12 hp engine. Without a 10 mph + headwind, the required 30 mph across the airfoil would have to be generated by the engine alone.

Even today, no light airplane could be kept in air without a engine with less than 25hp, Wright brothers had a 12.5hp engine. Such powerfull engine was developed in France with Santos Dumont help and a similar engine would make it possible for the Wright brother to really fly only after 1908.
@cardinalRG

Judging the sufficiency of the Wright's engine requires a calculation that assimilates factors such as horsepower, torque, gearing, propeller efficiency, coefficients of lift and drag, and others. If you haven't performed any such calculation, then you're only guessing about it's ability to produce the thrust needed by the Flyer. Moreover, the Wrights' flights of 1908 were not powered by a French engine partially designed by Santos-Dumont.

They did not comply with the 1905 French FAI rules for aviation records. But there is plenty of historical records of the flight. I think myths like that, as well as those regarding other competing aviation pioneers, originate with people seeking to validate a preferred assumption, rather than simply follow evidence to a conclusion. Many people who don’t want the Wrights to have been first, latch onto notions like the catapult-myth and then turn away from any contrary evidence. There was no catapult. It does not appear in any of their photographs of their camp. A glider would not have traveled 850 ft forward against that wind in 59 seconds, as Wilbur did on the fourth and final flight. Nobody flew before the Wrights because the Wrights had one thing over everybody else- their propellers. They were the first to design an airfoil shape to their propeller blades, resulting in a much more efficient and effective propulsion system. Santos-Dumont did not fly until he had designed a propeller based on the Wright Brothers' design, which he learned about through Octave Chanute, who did not keep what he knew about the Wrights' designs secret.

@@rescue270 Colonized! Read Aloud The New York Times, December 17, 1951. Page 30 WRIGHT TRIBUTE TODAY Airmen to Mark Anniversary of Kitty Hawk Flight KITTY HAWK. N.C, Dec.16 (U P) - Modern airmen will pay tribute here tomorrow to the forty-eighth anniversary of the Wright Brothers' pioneering airplane flight, but an old-timer who watched the first take-offs said the celebrators have picked the wrong day. Wilbur and Orville Wright are credited with making their first powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine on Dec. 17, 1903. But Alpheus W. Drinkwater, 76 years old, who sent the telegraph message ushering in the air age, said the brothers only "glided" off Kill Devil Hill that day. Their first real flight came on May 6, 1908, he said. It was on that day, that Wilbur Wright declared the airplane was a mighty fine contraption, but predicted it would never carry enough gasoline to span an ocean. Regardless of his quibble with aeronautics historians; Mr. Drinkwater will be on hand for the celebration tomorrow. The first flight will be marked by flights of jet planes, helicopters and huge cargo planes. www.nytimes.com/1951/12/17/archives/wright-tribute-today-airmen-to-mark-anniversary-of-kitty-hawk.html

The Aero Club de France were well informed about the Wrights beginning in 1900 when Wilbur Wright began corresponding with founding member Octave Chanute. Impressed with the Wrights' progress, Chanute traveled to the United States to visit them at Kitty Hawk in 1901, 1902, and at Dayton, Ohio in 1903. After his 1903 visit, Octave Chanute delivered a lecture to the Aero Club de France in which he described the Wrights' experiments with gliders and their plans to fly a powered aircraft. Present at Octave Chanute's 1903 lecture was a French artillery captain named Ferdinand Ferber who likewise traveled to the United States and visited the Wrights at Huffman Prairie in Dayton, Ohio. After meeting the Wrights, Ferdinand Ferber declared himself a "disciple of Wright" and in 1904 built a copy of a Wright-style glider, describing it as a "type du Wright." Relying on information gained during these and other visits to the Wrights, the December 1905 and January 1906 editions of L'Aerophile (the official journal of the Aero Club de France) confirmed the Wrights' successful flight of a powered heavier-than-air airplane. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1) I honestly don’t understand who came up with the idea to put Santos Dumont with a french accent in this otherwise excellent documentary. The man was full fledged brazilian, born and raised. If he has an accent speaking English, It would have been from brazilian portuguese. 2) It is absurd to learn all this and think the Write Brother were the inventors of Flight. It’s time to re-write history, with apologies to my fellow americans. The WBs were benefiaries of SD work. I disagree with the “Showman” statement of this documentary SD was generous man who wanted the whole world to benefit from his knowledge, as opposed to the WB who “supposedly” and allegedly have flown a catapulted contraption off of a dune with barely any witnesses, feat that is impossible to replicate with their first design, unlike SD 14-bis, which, inspite of its clumsiness, can be flown with identical replicas today. 3) It is an unquestionable fact that SD invented the dirigible. It is also an unquestionable fact tha he was the first man to fly a heavier than air machine, according to the international rules at the time (agreed upon even by the US) that flight had to be SELF PROPELLED, from FLAT GROUND, which neither one can be said about the Write flyer. 3) The Demoiselle, SD second craft is unquestionably the grandfather of all modern aircraft, not the Write Flyer. That is a fact I dare anyone to disput from an engineer stand point. In conclusion, anyone can argue abou who invented the airplane, but there is no doubt in my mind as to who should be considered the father of aviation. Alberto Santos Dumont is “ O Pai da Aviação”. It’s about time he is brought back to his rightful place in history.

Fabio Mendonça -- _”I honestly don’t understand who came up with the idea to put Santos Dumont with a french accent…”_ I agree that it’s very silly. _”It’s time to re-write history…”_ Friend, the phrase _re-write history_ means to obfuscate or distort history. History itself is immutable. I think you mean to re-write the history books, or otherwise revise the way that history is taught. _”…allegedly have flown a catapulted contraption off of a dune…”_ The earliest Wright flights (1903) did not use a catapult. _”…unlike SD 14-bis, which, inspite of its clumsiness, can be flown with identical replicas today.”_ None of the flying 14bis replicas are identical to the original, nor near to it. The closest to authenticity is the admirable Calassa version, but even it has many upgraded features including a modern Rotax engine, and a modern propeller whose lineage itself connects back the pioneering work of the Wrights. _”…he was the first man to fly a heavier than air machine, according to the international rules at the time (agreed upon even by the US) that flight had to be SELF PROPELLED, from FLAT GROUND, which neither one can be said about the Write flyer.”_ To begin with, any recognition by an oversight body is fundamentally an _official_ one, which does not necessarily equate to primacy. It is well understood in athletics, science and many other fields, that legitimate achievements can occur before _official_ recognition comes. Second, to argue for the legitimacy of official recognition, one has to argue for the authority of the source. Can you make the case that the _Federation Aéronautique Internationale (FAI)_ was the exclusive authority for all accomplishments, in all parts of the Earth, for all time…or must you acknowledge that this was an arbitrary claim to authority? Lastly, you are mistaken about the 1903 Wright Flyer, because it was self-propelled and took off from level ground. I encourage you to research the facts of this machine and, for that matter, the 14bis too. _”The Demoiselle, SD second craft is unquestionably the grandfather of all modern aircraft, not the Write Flyer.”_ Friend, no subjective opinion is un-questionable. The claim that (2+2=4) is unquestionable, but metaphors such as “grandfather” aren’t. _”That is a fact I dare anyone to disput from an engineer stand point.”_ No engineering needed. I just corrected you from a logical and semantic standpoint. _”It’s about time he is brought back to his rightful place in history.”_ _“Rightful…”_ I don’t criticize your strong sentiment regarding this topic, but I don’t share it either. It’s of no importance to me who did what first, it only matters what the technical accomplishments were, and both Santos Dumont and the Wrights were great contributors to the advancement of flight. I’ve made comments here only from an interest in clarity, and in defending the Wrights and their endeavors against mischaracterizations-such as those you’ve made. I do the same for Santos Dumont when people unfairly attack his achievements.

The Wright's were focused on getting a big contract from the Army. I don't think they even imagined that a newspaper or rich aero-enthusiasts would offer sizable prizes for aeronautical achievement. To get rich, they thought they needed a significant patent. They applied in 1904 and received it in 1906. They also miscalculated on how quick the French would advance. They thought they had a five year head start. By 1903, aero enthusiasts were aware of the Wright's claims. One tried to build a Wright Flyer from the pictures and sketchy information they had available. When it didn' t fly, they started to doubt the claims. The "Wrong Brothers" was used in an early documentary of failed attempts to build a flying machine. The Wright's were the Right Brothers.

The 1906 Bagatelle Field film proves the original 14bis can't fly. The 1906 film just shows a short uncontrolled hop. This is because the Wright brothers, in fact, were the first to take flight (1903). But in order to do it, they needed the help of a catapult, and their machine was actually a glider with a motor and not an airplane. Therefore they did not really fly. If we were to consider that being catapulted through the air is flying. The Wright brothers did not fly without external help until 1909, that is 3 years after Santos Dumont had already made his first self-propelled flight in front of many Parisian witnesses and journalists.

Now, that he was supposedly gay, that’s the first time I heard of it...not sure if I can trust such thing, which is pure speculation. It’s not farfetched to think of a pioneer aerospace engineer, a natural born Brazilian with wealthy background, being flamboyant while trying to preserve his privacy, keeping his personal life to himself. To begin with, it’s pretty clear that such pioneers were looked upon as “nutty” people trying to achieve “the impossible”.

GoisBR The launch catapult was not devised until after the machine had first flown. The Wright's first flights were made without it. Santos-Dumont's machine was of much better design than the Wright's, which is to be expected. He had much more flying experience, and had already won a major aviation prize in Paris. However, his machine came later than the Wright's. By the time that Santos-Dumont had successfully turned his attention to heavier-than-air machines, Orville and Wilbur had made a number of controlled, sustainable flights at Kill Devil Hills, firstly from rest, and latterly using the launch catapult. These flights represent an aviation 'first'.

Sorry Marcio, but the 14bis was not the first airplane to fly in 1906. The Wright brothers have that honor, on December 17, 1903. Santo-Dumont's earlier flying machines were dirigible ballons, not airplanes. 14bis was in many ways more properly classified as an aviation "experiment" rather than a true airplane capable of controlled flight. Even an experienced pilot crashed the reproduction that used to fly at Brazialiam airshows in just the smallest crosswind. One can say this and still admire Santos-Dumont as an inventor and daredevil. Santos-Dumont eventually designed the Damoiselle, an airplane far superior to anything the Wrights ever made. The great significance of Santos-Dumont was his willingness to discard ideas and adopt radically new ones from his failures.

When Santos Dumont attempted to fly the 14-bis in 1906, the Wright Brothers had already built and flown three different heavier-than-air flying machines: 1) the 1903 Flyer, which Took off under its own power and flew 852 feet (260 m) in 59 seconds, 2) the 1904 Flyer, which Took off under its own power and was the first heavier-than-air craft to fly in a complete circle as well as covering a distance of 4,080 feet during the same flight. Aviation pioneer Octave Chanute Observed many of the Flyer's 2 flights, and 3) the 1905 Flyer, which Took off under its own power and flew a distance of twenty-four miles, including circular several maneuvers. The Flyer was Also the world's first aircraft capable of carrying a passenger. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The Aero Club de France, the Federation, Aeronautique Internatioinale, and the French Government all certified the Wrights as having flown in 1903. The December 1905 and January 1906 issues of L'Aerophile documented the Wrights' successful flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and Dayton, Ohio. In point of fact, it was L'Aerophile's reportage of the Wrights that motivated Santos Dumont to cease experimentation with lighter-than-air aircraft and instead concentrate on heavier-than-air aircraft.

The truth IS Alberto Santos Dumont, the real thing! This world are full of the Brothers and others, everywhere, waiting for someone's ideas to copy, use and take advantage. These kind of individuals are empty and hollow, cowards, without any gift, or inspiration. The only thing this kind of individuals have in their minds are how to show themselves as someone (which they are not) and make profits using others' real thing as so speaking. Pathetic indeed.
