Huntington, West Virginia is one of the major rebuild shops throughout the CSX system. With many of the best rebuilt locomotives coming from here, including the Dash 3 program, and the new SD70AC's coming out of here over the last decade, these shops have always been a gathering point for railfans while in the area.
As is the case across many of the Class 1 Railroads, yards these days are full of surplus power, as the economy continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic that has rocked the globe for the past year. While rail traffic is back on the increase, many of these locomotives may never turn another revenue wheel for CSX, as the technology is outdated, or emissions standards aren't up to modern requirements.
Seen here are a few locomotives in the process of being rebuilt, some that are completely gutted for parts, and plenty of others that will likely sit until the wheels rot off them. Sad sights indeed these days, with around 150 locomotives at various spots around the shops, but a sign of the times I reckon!
Hope Everyone Enjoys!

Well for a lot of these this likely won’t be the end. From what I’m hearing, the Flared Radiator SD70’s are next in line for upgrades/rebuilds after the flat 4500 series. Not sure how long that will be, but that’s what I’ve heard. For the rest of these units, who’s to say...

@kotabeaner Really? That'd be amazing! The Flared MAC's are some of my favorite CSX units! They'd look fantastic in shiny YN3C! A few have come out of storage, and there are now at least 2 more active than we had before, so I wonder if CSX has done that to test the plausibility of rebuilding them?

I notice here and in other railroad videos of laid-up locomotives that any number appear to be in good condition. How does a RR decide when it's time to take a unit out of service and then how do they decide to lease, sell or scrap the unit? Sorry for my ignorance but I know these are major investments and it just seems they'd run them until don't run anymore. Thanks for any responses. Second, this is great video and very interesting, keep up the good work. Thanks, Bob

Robert, you ask a simple question that is asked way to often in these forums. All of those EMD’s basically are at the end of their useful life span and if EMD was still in operations maybe a rebuild program could been cost effective much like what GE is doing…. As far as fuel cost and operating the new GE’s will be seen up front for the foreseeable future, technology is in constant change. I think the 4-axle engine still has a future and the need to service our industries with rail spurs still has a chance seeings how this new generation doesn’t want to get behind the wheel of a big rig, “buy American “ certainly should help…..ms~~~

I think you just won the award for "Best Music in a KZbin Video". Congratulations! What is it? This is kind of like how the pandemic has accelerated the retirement of the Boeing 747-400 by two or three years. Some get turned into freighters but most get scrapped. At least the locos might get rebuilt! :) In the late 1990s my cousin was a railfan, so I caught the bug a little bit for the locos of that time. Basically, I like the nose on the SD60M/70M (before they ruined it by making the entry door full height). After seeing a video similar to this one showing NS locos, I have a question for an expert... I saw some SD70s in that NS video that had a nose just like an F45, as opposed to the ones in this video where the nose is tapered... Are the NS F45 shaped noses from before they isolated the cab, and the cabs like are in this video with the tapered nose have the isolated cab that became standard? Funny how we were always bored to see SD40-2s and wanted to see new power. Now you realize how cool they are. Just like the Boeing 727...

This is CSX Huntington Heavy Rebuild Shop, so almost every locomotive in the shop has a plan to be rebuilt. You can only give so much care to something that does as much work as the modern American diesel locomotive. Railroads will never be perfect and they’ve never been perfect. They’re in the process of restoring locomotives to this day, and they’ve been in business since the 1940’s. They’re doing everything they can for all the locomotives in that yard. Just give ‘em some slack, they sure do deserve it.
