A friend of mine from Japan once told me this was sung at their graduation ceremony. I first heard of the song when watching the Evangelion reboot movies. Save to say, both of us had a very different interpretation of the song, yet the two of us enjoyed listening to it all the same.

So crazy this song has been used in so many animes. I was really confused so here's what I found. This song was originally in Japanese and was made as a folk song by a band called Akaitori for the Nemu Popular Festival '70. So it got really popular and the Japanese soccer team used it as their official theme in 1998 for the FIFA world cup. Anyway, these are all the animes I know it's been used in. (It's not all of them, but it's the ones I know of) - Nichijou - K-On! - Evangelion - Danganronpa - Yandere Sim A lot of artists did cover on this song, including non-Japanese, like Haley Westenra! Hope this helped, and satisfied the curiosty, if you had it.

I, I have a dream A dream of you and me We’re flying high above We’re soaring over sea Bless me with some wings For I, so want to fly These precious white wings Will take me soaring high To the sun that lights the day (Tsubasa wo kudasai, tsubasa wo kudasai…) To the clouds that drift away Only then will I be free Past the city lights and haze Through the autumn trees ablaze In the sky, I am truly free Just you and me I, I have a dream We’re high above the trees The wind is in my hair The ocean breeze takes me Tell me, what can I do? To earn, earn me some wings? Some precious white wings To help me live my dreams To the sun that lights the day (Tsubasa wo kudasai, tsubasa wo kudasai…) To the clouds that drift away Only then will I be free Past the city lights and haze Through the autumn trees ablaze In the sky, I am truly free Just you and me

This song... gives me mixed feelings. It takes one of the prettiest, most touching songs about childhood dreams and turns it into a cheap love song. The chorus is great, but all this "you and me" just ruins it for me. :(

Ya know, it doesn't ruin it for me but I see what you do. I know some Japanese, but only as well as any other student who took it a few semesters so I do have to fill in gaps so I thought a part of it might be me projecting, but my interpretation was always that it was about blissful isolation. This is a very different interpretation
@whitebase2365

@@PusoPimpOVER9000 umm... It still changed the original meaning. She wants a pair of wings because "she want to fly away to the sky where there's no sorrow but free". I'm in tears every time I listen the original lyrics. But, the English lyrics is like "I'll be free if I have a pair of wings. I just want to fly with you". There's no room for original sadness here... I love her voice though!

"Please give me a set of wings" song by Kamifuusen (paper balloon) has some another meanings. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJe0mq2Gn7OlatE It's been 40 years since they had become duo. They were classmates of high school. They started singing when they were university student. In 1970, they had debuted as professional group "Akaitori (Red Bird)" . "I wanna fly into this boundless sky spreading my wings." The song "Please give me a set of wings", they've released following year has made big hit. After Tokyo Olympic,in the 1970's, Japan had rushed into rapid economic growing era. "Please give me a set of wings" song by Akaitori (Red Bird) fit just to the mood of soaring economic growth. We all were singing this song getting in the mood (meaning as cheering song). He says, I was afraid of the atmosphere people were singing it as if cheering song. and he had felt out of place in the mood. In 1974, Red Bird had dissolved their group. At the same time, the couple of ex-group married and debuted as Kamifuusen duo. Their 7th single record titled "Before spring has come" had made a remarkable hit. The duo as singers and as couple have had satisfying life until then. Suddenly unexpected disaster attacked them. 17th January 1995, The disastrous Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. They had been living in Hyogo Prefecture and had been active as duo based at Kansai District. They were stunned by figure of the town had changed into ruins. He realized at a glance all human-made structures would be broken sometime. We have started conversations about what is important for our life. about way of life. Out of place feeling of the hit song they have been holding in their hearts for long time. The song "Please give me a set of wings" had inspired genuine meaning into them when they were volunteering to sing "Please give me a set of wings". "If my wish would come true right now, I want a set of wings." They have been singing for 40 years this song. In the midst of ruins of the disastrous Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, When they were singing with people in deep sorrow. The sentence "into this boundless sky without sorrow" in the song means imaginary world after one's death. The disaster had taken the lives of thousands of people away. They noticed this song is a requiem for the deceased. (meaning as requiem) "Into this boundless sky without sorrow","flapping my wings, I'll go into the sky." they sing. and noticed this song is a message that we should do my best to live as long as we live. (meaning as a message song) They think that song singing become the power to live hopefully. They'll sing sincerely through their experience. Audience will make their own image of this song. They want such songs audience could comprehend the meanings by themselves. As evangelists who preach the power of songs, they'd continue to sing from now on. as a message song. I was introduced to this by Astrophysics music video. From this video I think you must sing it slower if you want to sing it in English.

I feel this song can be interpreted two different ways. One is that it's a wholesome song about friendship and honestly the second is just horribly depressing 😅 but I always assumed this song was some sort of thinly veiled metaphor for suicide
