There's a lovely video of this song, Hal with Mick Hanly together each on an acoustic guitar, playing this live in an Irish pub. I've been meaning to request it, but then Hal passed, and here we are. Hal's voice was special.

I was privileged to hear and attend many of his early live concerts in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. It is amazing that he was able to hold onto the pitch after a life of being so hard on himself with alcohol and drugs. His early concerts were absolutely electric. Hal was gifted and absolutely handsome as hell. God blessed this man.

I saw Hal with his band and with another guitar player doing an acoustic set. He had a great rapport with the audience. I especially remember when he played with his full band and that was one of the best shows I’d ever seen because Hal was musically great and hilarious with a great sense of humor. I met him at one of his shows and he was a genuinely nice man.

This is crazy... my neighbor 2 houses up is the lead singer in a band called Just Another Band and this is one of the songs they included in their set while they were practicing. I ran up the road(in my bare feet) and I live in New York, and it was about 35 degrees outside, til I got to the bottom of their driveway and yelled up to them to play louder.😆!

I really like the fact that you seem to be a real fan of American Country Music. Is it popular in the UK? I also don't care for the more modern sampling/synthesized sounds in Country music today (perfectly acceptable for 80's Pop/Rock, IMO). I was a big fan of early 90's Country, including Hal Ketchum. Sad that he's gone.

So the story goes. Mick Hanly, who composed this wonderful song, was struggling to pay the bills at the time. Receiving the odd royalty check of around $1,900 quarterly and just about keeping the wolf from the door. With Christmas around the corner he then got a check in the mail for $2,900. It was only as he shared a celebratory glass of champagne with his wife that he noticed that the cheque was in fact for $20,900. I'm sure it was the beginning of many but its a nice story.
