Hm. Nah. I mean I see the potential and tremendous skill he already had in his younger years but he effectively crippled his vocal development with his forced child-like tone. It's impressive how good he was *despite* all that and sure, it's what made his voice, his entire sound but when he was younger you could hear that he was actually meant to become more of a Donny Hathaway, tone-wise but the abuse done to him made him reject anything adult male about himself so yeah. Makes me anxious listening to his shaky trillo that used to be such a free, soulful vibrato.

Hey Fil. As an adult Michael’s voice was deeper than his public voice. My dad did work for his aunt. We got to meet Michael a couple times. He was a normal guy at the time. This was before the nose thing. I don’t know if that had an affect on his voice. His voice was deeper than my brother’s. Just sounded like a regular guy. Not prissy or anything like that. He showed his aunt a lot of love and respect until her death. Back then we had no internet, cells and didn’t carry cameras everywhere. Which surprisingly makes me appreciate it more. My memories of those times are my own. No one can use a photo or recording out of context. Michael had a beautiful voice. No matter what people thought of him, he had talent. Huge talent. Thanks for reminding me of better times Fil.

Interesting to see that his more "soulful" sounding vibrato as a kid did carry into the more soulful parts of his vibrato as an adult. Though decreased in size, he can vacillate between the two- traditional and soul sounding. I've heard some of his vocal warm up recordings before and his range, low to high, is insane. Ridiculous talent! Gives you goosebumps! He was the King for a reason!
@demetriusreynolds81782 жыл бұрын
This is my analysis of his singing from off the wall to invincible! I believe Michael used his voice as an instrument. The pitch he would sing in had to match the beat and melody of song therefore creating one sound He wouldn’t over sing or under sing, just gave enough to go with that particular song to flow as one sound! If you go back and listen to his songs and focus on the beat then listen to his voice you’ll see how he’s mirroring the melody of each particular song

Really enjoyed this analysis, Fil. Thank you. MJ was such a brilliant dancer in his adulthood that his voice is often overlooked and sometimes even mocked (because of his unique stylization) - it’s therefore great to see his singing being acknowledged. And he was a gifted singer both as a child and as an adult. There’s a really good book on his singing titled! “Man in the Music: The Creative Life and Work of Michael Jackson,” which goes into detail about the production of each of his songs and theres some really excellent insights about his singing from the people, who worked with him. Things such as how he would do his own backing tracks and harmonies and how he would be able to get the pitch and tones perfect on each such successive take. For other singers, for e.g, the producers would do that in the studio during mixing, however, MJ would do it himself, by singing the tracks again and again. Quincy Jones has said of MJ, that because he was so strong and and confident technically, he could let his creativity loose within those parameters. Best combination of art and craft. Regarding his childhood ability, I think his rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine,” is one of the best ito showing off his range. MJ was a belter, and his phrasing and interpretation of this song at just 13 yrs old is quite extraordinary. He really puts his own spin on it. As regards his adult voice, I’m really not sure whether he spoke with his natural voice. And whether that voice was so high. The reason is there’s an interview somewhere on YT featuring Bruce Swedien, the sound engineer, who worked with MJ on various projects and recordings. He talks about how he once telephoned Michael, and that MJ responded with a much lower and deeper voice. When he queried it and asked Michael, why he did not speak that way all the time, MJ said, “I don’t like it down there.” Lastly, I just want to say that MJ worked/works hard on his craft. He practiced over and over, to make it look natural. Even as a child star, he would go sit with the other Motown stars, and try to learn from them. Would absorb everything like a sponge. When his voice was breaking or starting to, he realised his voice would change and he then worked on how to incorporate that. In that regard, he was was influenced by the BeeGees and their use of falsetto. (Barry Gibb talks about those times with MJ and how they continued to remain friends in subsequent years. It was at this time that MJ then stated introducing the yips, hee-hees, and shamons etc to his music - he was branching out his vocal sound, making it unique. He therefore worked on his voice, such that even though he could no longer be the belter of years gone by, he could still craft his own, unique sound.

There have been a number of people from those who knew Michael Jackson very personally and even some others that had chance encounters with him that have said that his public voice (i.e. high pitched) that he spoke as an adult was fake and that his real speaking voice was noticeably lower. This was said by people like Quincy Jones, film director Spike Lee, singer Akon and rapper The Game. The Game didn't really know Michael well but he did speak to him on the phone once and said that his voice was much lower than how he spoke in public. He said that Michael's voice was "low key deep" but "you could still tell it was Michael Jackson". So Michael Jackson's real voice was not actually high pitched. With this in mind it would be most interesting to analyze the one song Michael Jackson did were he has a completely different and noticeably deeper singer voice and that's "2000 Watts" from the Invincible album. He never sang another song that way ever in his whole career! It makes it the most unique song in Michael Jackson's entire discography! Please consider doing a video highlighting that track and analyzing it, Fil!

@@cannacliffords7462 Maybe: We could never Know... But, by all the elements of Michael’s Character, & His Neverland Actions...That would be my Guess. I have noticed this in a few Non-Celebrities through my Life: • Adults: Using Baby-Talk • Church People - Talking Slowly, & Ultra-Whispered (Not normal.) • Dominant Men: Pushing into a Ultra Deep Voice. • Even Glenn Beck phases from his Regular Voice, to Systematic “Characterized Voices,” for Emphasis. There is discussion of MJ’s Song “2,000 Watt,” where he sings w/ his more Regular Voice ... SO HE HAD A REGULAR VOICE, & this was his only attempt to do so. I’m not a fan Groupie... But, whenever I heard comments about MJ - It was always about, “How he was an “ALL-AROUND TALENT!” Just Guessing, It could have been a very “Logical Decision,” to simply give what he thought his Fans Expected, or, Wanted! I’d say his strongest asset was his dancing and the entertainment he gave to his audience night after night. When I think of Michael, I think of his dancing, his videos, which slowly became mini- movies, and the way he would engage his audience. Tho he had a really great voice, I never really put him as one of the greatest vocalists ever, that is really not where his strengths were. To further illustrate my point, every time people talk about Michael they always mention the moonwalk or the choreography and the Thriller video, that’s it. Now, take Freddie Mercury for instance, When people talk about him it’s always the voice and the crowd control, nothing else. Tho he was a great pianist , that is not where his strengths were.

Michael started singing with his mother. I suspect she's the one that influenced the more dramatic vibrato he used when he was younger, along with artists that he admired at different stages of his life. I don't believe any of his adult voice was an accident - he'd have worked to have it sound exactly the way he wanted and not necessarily settled for what might have come naturally. He had lots of singing lessons and coaching. Still reckon you can do an addendum and show why the Cascio tracks are fake. The vibrato was the dead give-away and should show up beautifully.

This is amazing! I kind of wonder if MJ was intentional about the way he ascended in his later aged vibrato/tremolo. It's such a beautiful sound. His vibrato is one of the more unique things about him!

Your analyses of performers are always SO interesting. Thank you for doing this! Please also consider talking about the video/perforrmance titled "Paul Carrack - Don't Shed A Tear (Live in NYC - 1988)" with Nick Lowe (on bass!), Andy Newmark, Andy Fairweather Low & Audie de Lone. The guys look like they're having such fun (esp. Andy Newmark). It's one I've watched over & over.

That made me appreciate his voice even more, thank you. Hey Fil, can you look at Stevie Nicks singing Landslide, both recorded and live versions I’ve heard? She sounds flat to my probably ignorant ear, and yet it sounds right and amazing. Thanks.

People who knew him well said that in private, he spoke with a much lower voice as an adult. I remember taking a Speech Therapy class while doing my Linguistics Master in the U.S., and our prof pointed out that psychology has a lot to do with how you use your voice. He was the perfect example of someone who didn't accept becoming an adult, and this is what we see here. He _could_ speak much lower, but his "idol" and he even said that, plus all his nasal plastic surgery, plus the name of his ranch, Neverland, was Peter Pan from the old Disney movies. He never had a childhood, in addition to having an abusive father all his life. Notice how his other much less known brothers have a much lower and normal tone of voice. It was all down to his psychological makeup and traumatic background. Poor guy.

What are you talking about…. His less known brothers lol. All of the Jackson’s, even the grandchildren have soft voices
@vorthora2 жыл бұрын
@@thekingmichael3486 Soft, but lower than his. Even his friend Elizabeth Taylor said so.

Of course Michael was talented but his voice is too effeminate for me. Also he was one of the weirdiest entertainers of all time..his face was all fake, chin and cheek implants, eye surgery to change eye shape, lip reduction, wore wigs did not have spotted vitalago but bleached his skin , at least 13 nasal surgeries so he had no nose left. I think he was mentally ill. Who would turn themselves into a freak. Somewhere there was a body image problem. He needed psychological help and no ody reached out to help him.Sadly, he died of a drug overdose. Did he have to strain to sing bass or could he sing bass and baritone? There is more to vocal range than just singing high tenor.

@@margarettaylor8107 while he had his issues, some of the stuff said about him arent even true. for example the vitiligo thing. you can google michael jackson vitiligo and find pictures of him with spots on his skin.
@margarettaylor81072 жыл бұрын
@@erenyeeagah204 Hero, I know he denied having bleached his skin but I have never seen any pictures of anyone that was even skin tone all ar once when they had vitilago. They had spots which finally evened to all white. I never once saw a splotch on him.He was instantly white. Be that as it may, if he had vitilago, then he had it ,but his insane and successful attempts to botch his appearance cannot be explained..all those surgeries.. Except, I believe he had poor body image..felt inferior in some way or other major personality disorders. And the there is the accusatons of his pedophilia and that absurd videoed interview about sleeping with children being the most natural thing.. He had everyone around him sign confidentiality papers and swore to cause them bodily harm if they spoke about what they knew. There was enough documentation about pedophilia that a big civil suit was won against him. Like Bill Cosby, the most trusted man on earth at one time, witnesses against him will trickle out , eventually to be too numerous for the public to ignore. Even if Michael were not a freak, even though he is so talented, I have never enjoyed songs about monsters or rats. I much prefer a real man's deep vocals to a man's effeminate voice like Michael had. His dances, he had to choreigraph for hours, one reason as he said on Oprah, he copied Gene Kelly, Fred Astzire and Elvis. Plus Paula Abdul was his dance teacher. I thought his music was better suited for Broadway where you have to rehearse for days. He never got requests from the audience to sing someone else's hit tune. He did not have that recall ability and he could not dance spontaneously to the rhythm of a sing..he had to rehearse it. Talented? Yes but I do not enjoy his vocal tone..it is not full, rich, deep or golden. But you can like or love him.There should be room. for dissenting opinions Afterall, this is America and diversity of opinion should allowed. Unfortunately, our actions follow us after death. I believe his pedophilia legacy will always haunt his image for as long as his nane is well known. Because he mostly sang pop songs and did not diversify extensively, his legacy may not live on for thirty or forty more years.Perhaps it will. I think not.

I remember listening to another analysis on Michael Jackson's voice and that analysis said that his voice was spent in his early 20s because of how much he had performed as a child and as teenager. And therefore, he only sang in a very restricted register. I don't know, I'm no expert.
@oemisc28802 жыл бұрын
Early 20s? He released his Bad album in 87, which included the rock song Dirty Diana which isn’t easy to sing. He was in his late 20s by then. Also Earth Song recorded in mid 90s is another hard one. He did have lupus tho which I believe affected his lungs

Listen to his vocal warm ups on YT. He wasn't restricted but I'd say generally, from 30 onwards his health really began to suffer. All that remarkable ability but he was still human...forget the stuff he did in his childhood, the major shows he during the BAD Tour were two hours long, high octane singing and dancing all while travelling the world and dealing with a personal life, mental health issues etc. and being the biggest solo artists the world had ever seen. It's remarkable he survived as long as he did. His voice was always going to change after puberty, just like Justin Bieber's did. Only, Michael had greater singing chops in his youth and so naturally he would too in adulthood. I'd say his voice became spent for live performance in his mid-30s. But again, his health seemed all over the place and so in those years he focused more on the performance aspect i.e. his dancing and I think that's why people actually undermine his vocal ability a lot. The last 15 years were really tragic and he was put through ordeal after ordeal, but his voice still had a lot of resonance and beautiful quality in the better parts of the This Is It footage. Poor man was put through a lot, but he had a strong singing voice right till the end. In his early 20s, he was absolutely on fire.

I think you're forgetting that by age 11, he had been singing professionally for 6 years. I'm not talking anything away from what you're saying about his natural talent and ability, I'm just saying that by 11, he had already honed his voice.

I remember seeing the Jackson 5 on American and really enjoyed that little kid singing and dancing. And kept enjoying him throughout the years. Never can say goodbye, Ben and We Are the world. So many good songs znd the dances with them. I bought his video for the Wii because of the thriller dance. I,too, could learn his moves and exercise at the same time. One step to his 10 but still it is so much fun to try. 🙂
