I love how Lyle Lovett doesn’t move much on stage but his blues influence and amazing sense of time has me bobbing my head, tapping my feet and smiling. Love him! I’ve gotten my big break just this year! I’m 58 and play in 2 bands now. A traditional Irish session band and a folk cover band. Tomorrow I will be playing at the local farmers market. It may not be Carnegie hall, but I’m having the best time of my life making music!

Lyle's an old friend and former band mate. The first time I heard him sing was in a Mr. Gatti's Pizza in College Station, Texas in 1978 in front of a bunch of drunk A&M students. My instant reaction was that it was the most naturally beautiful voice I'd ever heard, on a par with Low Rawls. His Large Band performances today are amazing to see. He is a consummate showman as well.

He's a consummate showman yet with such kindness and grace and respect for fellow musicians. I've seen him with the Large Band and he had a local church youth choir sing on stage with him. Can you imagine showing up to Wednesday night choir practice and the director says "I've got a special request..."?

I love Lyle's voice. Saw him live last year with the large band. Beautiful music of Texas, Country, Western, Jazz, Blues, and Gospel. I love his songs and he goes out of his way to give all the musicians in his band moments to shine. Even if country is not your thing see him live if you can.

ArchieGoodwin71 Couldn’t agree more. I grew up listening to classic rock, punk & thrash, but I heard Lyle around ‘86/87 (maybe on Letterman) & was immediately captivated by his voice & lyrics. I’ve seen him a couple times & they’re up there with my favorite shows. He truly is a class act.

I first learned of Leo Kottke in the late 70s. On one of his album covers, there was a snippet of someone’s interview with him. When asked why he didn’t sing, “I have a voice like goose farts on a muggy morning “.

Lyle is not Only talented, but the Kindest, Most Generous, Down -To-Earth Sweetheart Of a Celebrity you will ever come across (except for maybe Dolly Parton & Tina Turner) & due to my occupation, I have met many. To have Fil not over-look really any of these talents, is always such a surprise to find in my “InBox”. Thanks Fil, your way beyond your years. ☮️❤️Lori J.

Not surprising to hear that, Lori. His wit, and self-effacing, between song prattle, is great. Now, if we can get Fil to take a look at Kevin Welch... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHLFqXhjrrqkrdE ..."There's gonna be two dates on your tombstone, all your friends will read 'em But, all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em Yes, it's a great big world, life down here on earth"...

I saw Lyle Lovett and his big band in a small venue back in the late 80s and he was great. I’ll never forget it because I brought my 8 year old daughter with me and we sat in the front row. It was a nighttime show and she fell asleep. Lyle stopped the show at one point to acknowledge her with some kind words. Great guy, great music!

Always been a Lyle Lovett fan AND a Leo Kottke fan! “ That’s no lady, she’s my wife “ is a favorite, and “ Vaseline machine gun “ from Kottke. I’ve never really considered Lovett a capital “ C” country guy ( more of a progressive alt country/Texas swing/cow punk sort of a thing ) but, it is closer to what he does than anything else. A. Clever songwriter with a wry sense of humor and a texture in his voice that you can’t get any other way besides mileage! Annnnd Kottke... what the hell can you say about him?!? Plays guitar like he has twenty-seven fingers, unflappable sense of a groove... just amazing! Great video!

Love this duet and love your video Phil. Guitar Tourette's is really funny. I don't know if you have ever been to a Leo Kottke concert but the stories are often as entertaining as the guitar playing. A really good example of the stories and the Tourette's is from a live album he did a while ago. Track is called "Combat". It is on KZbin but just a recording so you can't see him play. But, story is funny and guitar Tourette's at its finest. I could listen to that all day!

Thanks for another great analysis! My parents got to see him and Robert Earl Keen in some of their first performances while they were at Texas A&M (my dad was 2 years ahead of them) as they played at the coffee shop under the Student Union and bars around the university. Humble beginnings for two amazing performers. Edit: BTW - Lyle didn't start playing guitar or performing until he was in High School. Not sure about Robert, but Lyle was a solo act during college and Robert had his "Front Porch Gang". Both were doing covers during that time and didn't start doing original stuff until after they graduated.

Chris Trott - what a treat that must have been for your parents. Lyle Lovett and REK collaborated on lots of music, but IMHO the best is “This Old Porch”, which talks about those days. I've learned about from your reviews (I don't play) and enjoy how you add in the historical details about careers and influences and how all music is tied together in some way. Also, I've noticed that you haven't yet reviewed Kenny Wayne Shepherd - here's a recent example of his playing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmqtlWOOhLmZZ8k. Fun fact - Kenny and Joe Bonamassa were both born in 1977 and began playing at about the same age. This was from a Keeping the Blues Alive cruise that Joe puts on each year. These cruises are a great event to highlight a lot of the older and new musicians. This was from the 2019 cruise. I'm new to Fil's reaction/analysis vids but I'm an addict now. I've intently watched dozens so far and find myself nodding in agreement thinking "Oh yeah, I see it." without even realizing. I love the historic perspective Fil lends to the review. Just got my first guitar as a gift because I was appreciative of the music scene at this small pub. I was envious of the playing and by the end of the night the owner said, "Bob, that Ovation over there is yours". I'm 60 (kinda aged for a beginner) but going to give it a shot. Music is timeless, I'm not, so why not? The guitar is an early Ovation and it feels nice holding it. There may be a day I "rock".

After you pointed out the guitar tourette's, it occurred to me there could be a comic act, where 2 musicians have a conversation while having an emotional conversation, while both artists softly play the guitar in a way that reveals their real feelings, even though they are not verbally revealing their real feelings.

Would love to hear your throughs on Tommy Bolin and his guitar work. Played with Grand Funk and The James Gang, both before the age of 25 ( his age at the time of his death of an overdose). A very versatile player that blended many styles together. Teaser the title track of his solo album is good, but playing the whole album you get to see his versatility and genius.

Saw him with Zephyr in '69 at the Denver Music Festival. They were playing when the tear gas hit. Tommy and Candy Givens kept the crowd calm. Imagine playing and singing after being tear gassed. Professional. I'm sometimes convinced that people nostalgic for the '60s weren't there.

I saw Leo live several years ago now. He focused mainly on his 6 string standard tuning. I think he was resting his hand/wrist because of injury through slide and 12 string. He's great no matter what.

Lyle Lovett fans may not know that he was in a fairly major movie some years ago. "The Player," with Tim Robbins, Greta Scacchi, Whoopi Goldberg, and yes Lyle Lovett! It's a Noir-ish murder mystery, worth seeing.

Leo is one of the greatest guitarists, it seems, no one, except guitar players, has ever heard of. Loved the album Lyle did some years ago, with his Large Band, he did some of the old "Big band era music".(I was disappointed at the flip/b side, as it was Country) I'd hoped he'd stick with the Big Band genre, but he didn't. Still that one side kicked area, IMO. Leo still looks young today, which is amazing, as he's been recording since the early 70s.(I don't know if he is still alive.)

Great video Fil. It’s hard for me to think of many or any overnight sensations. It may look like it to the general public but there is always some kind of continuous musical activity in the background that people can’t see. A lot of listening to music, busking, playing small venues, etc. being a background vocalist.. And there’s people like Nick Drake, William Blake, Van Gogh who don’t make it until well after they’re gone. It’s still worth even in the last case because the person still makes an impact.
