At first glance one comes to the conclusion that SRV was one of the best. It's only when you dig deeper into what SRV was all about. The gauge of his strings. The length of his set. The soul that was amplified when playing the guitar. That's when you know he WAS the Best!!!

Pretty cool story. A buddy of mine was good friend's with Jimi's dad, Al Hendrix and he would go up to Seattle and stay with him from time to time. On one visit, Al was telling my friend Phil about a knock on the door he had gotten one day and when he answered, there was a limo parked out front and SRV standing there with his entourage on the doorstep. Stevie began to lament on how much he loved Jimi and always wanted to meet Al, so he could let him know AND invite him to the show he was playing that night at the Paramount. Al invited him in and after so many minutes, asks to be excused. He goes to the hall closet, grabs a guitar case, brings it out and opens it, a twelve string acoustic that belonged to Jimi and Al informed Stevie that NOBODY has touched that guitar since Jimi had passed. Stevie tuned it up and proceeded to "Go To Town" for over an hour! So, there you have it, SRV, in Al's living room, playing Jimi's 12 string!? Talk about a moment...lol! If ANYONE would like the picture from that day, just hit me up on Messenger and I'll be glad to send it. My name on Messenger is Erik Slavens

@@user-ev2qo1hj1g It would seem you are more into the technical aspect, and I'm into the audiophile end of it. For me, Stevie transcends live performances onto my speakers better than any other guitarist, I don't need to see him live when I have him in my living room, EVH does not provide that experience, and I do own 5 Van Halen lp's so don't get me wrong, I love Van Halen! Stevie is an all around performer any other guitarist would have trouble matching. It's not just his playing that is exceptional, it's the way he plays, the feeling you get watching him, or as in my case, I get goosebumps listening to him on my stereo. He's there with me in the room, and I don't get that from many Guitarists, and certainly not EVH.👍😎✌ P.S. What happened to these comments by you? Why do people delete comments? I always wonder. Yes, it's obviously a very subjective subject, but you seem to have taken it personal. I'm not diminishing Eddie Van Halen's guitar skills, which are spectacular, at all! We're simply stating why we think one is better than the other through a back & forth communication where I have the back, but you are deleting the forth? Doesn't make sense! 😎✌ Here's the last one you carelessly deleted which states why you delete your comments. @S "I just cleaned it up to keep it simple. Rather than have 20 back and fourths. Lets keep it simple. You like Stevie thats ok, I like EVh better thats cool. Nuff said. I didn't know Einste..." P.S. In response to your comment that EVH is "more original" & "a bigger innovator", One would be hard pressed to get more original than Stevie Ray Vaughan, but as to the innovations he made, I'll leave that to guitar tech gurus like you to decide while I take a listen to Texas Flood! 😁

Hi from Texas , Y'all really don't realize just how good SRV really was . I had the pleasure of getting to know Stevie through some friends , and as a bassist I can appreciate the man , very easy to drive , a guy that feeds on the rythem , that's what he had that made him so good . Voodoo child is a blues based song , and he was a blues master . The technique of lead line then back to the rythem line is a classical blues style called (call and answer) where you call with the lead lick then answer it with the rythem . You can also answer a vocal lick the same way.( Mr. B.B.King) but that's another story . I'LL give you young folks a tip , if you want to be a great guitarist , you got to learn the blues . It will teach you how to feel the emotion that's there inside the music , ready for you to bring out . Rock on ! And R.I.P. STV.

He definately was an open channel. Not easy to do. I do a lot of painting copies. It's a way for someone to get a real painting of a piece they like, for about a fourth of the price. But there's something about the love, real absolute loving relationship you feel for an artist when you copy them, and recreate their style that you can see in Stevie Ray when he's covering these. He could play it BETTER if he wanted to. But he wants to recreate them, and that's pure.

@memnok magee I really got to disagree there. and look at it this way Stevie died real young think about every year that goes by in the heights you could reach. Stevie played with more soul and feeling than anyone I have ever heard play in my life . People talk about this is vector player in their technical abilities if they don't have the soul or the heart that it takes to make people feel the music. I guess it's really hard to explain. When I was growing up we had a piano. My mother could play anything any of the classical pieces she could sit down it a piano and playing out Mozart Bach whatever but I asked you to play anything blues or boogie and she was lost she didn't have it. I would sit down there as a little kid start playing boogie-woogie pieces and she was just amazed because I didn't even know how to read music or anyting I just listened to it copied it and then after a while I got it and it was inside me and it came out and I didn't know what was supposed to come next I made it go there. I have never heard guitar player that was better than Stevie or as good as SRV except perhaps Hendricks. If you think someone could out Hendrix Hendrix then you are probably very young and also cannot think logically. SRV could play the way he did only because Jimi Hendrix lived. Jimi created the sound, the style, the utilization of overtones, feedback, hum and even the the half step down tuning in rock music I doubt anyone had really considered prior. To have lived when Jimi was first heard on radio was monumental moment. There had never been anything like it and what you heard before that moment went into antiquity if you were a lover of rock guitar. SRV copied Jimi well in a few aspects but not close enough, the differences are there and easy to hear. Nobody will ever top Jimi in the genre of rock and Jimi live on stage the sound was even more striking. Many great players out there and I admire those who copy Jimi until they do it too much then they begin to sound almost foolish.Only listen to his music that was released while he was alive and never believe anything that the woman called janie says. She is a criminal in my view and others agree she is cheapening Jimi's image, I speak out as often as I can about it...

@@cravinbob i am not very young. I own every album hendrix released. I also own stuff released long after his death. I'm not as close minded as you and will take whatever comes out, warts and all. I am a consummate hendrix fan. If you know anything about stevie, you'd know he loved jimi. Ever notice the left handed bridge on #1? As far as my original comment, stevie's note articulation and timing are impeccable. For my money stevie is a technically better player. Jimi was by far a more prolific writer. And that's not intended as an insult or in any way diminish what jimi accomplished. It's how MY ear hears it. Do you play?

Honestly I think SRV's Voodoo Child is notably inferior to Hendrix's. His chops were insane but he turned it into another twangy Texas blues song. Hendrix's was a psychedelic firebomb that could have set fire to Cambodia beyond Richard Nixon's wildest dreams. Even if Stevie's chops were a little tighter, his stylistic range was far narrower. He had his signature sound, and WHAT a sound, but that was it. Hendrix was ever the explorer finding new ways to expand his palette and Eddie Kramer said he was a brilliant sound engineer too. Yes I would argue SRV's chops were slicker, but Hendrix definitely surpassed him in creativity and musicianship and even Stevie would tell you that.

I was blessed to have been a friend of Stevie Ray right up to his tragic departure from this world. Met him in Florida 1984 & we hit it off well & would play goofy songs & have fun before & after his shows. He told me once that Jimi would come show him how to play certain passages. I replied "gimmee some of what yer smoking cuz I want Jimi to come visit me too". He then said that he meant that he asked Jimi's spirit to help connect to his feel & where to play the piece on the fretboard. Stevie said the spirits of those beyond this world love to give their help when they are asked for it in sincerity. He is sorely missed by all that personally knew the beautiful soul that he was. Especially his brother Jimmie. We get together now & then when he isn't on the road. I knew who Jimmie was in The Fabulous Thunderbirds before hearing about Stevie. Jimmie has a tone all his own & one of the purest vintage blues players alive. Perhaps you can check out T Birds Full Time Lover sometime.

Here is a prime difference between the two greats...SRV started playing guitar at age seven, and was not discovered until he was 27!...Hendrix did not start playing an electric until he was 15, and was discovered when he was 23...So one can say that Jimi was a "natural" genius, while Stevie had more time to hone his amazing skills...I think you can hear the difference in their styles, because of their different situations in Life.

In the 60’s and 70’s Jimmy page used .008 and Hendrix used custom .009 and .010. So when SRV came in with his tone it was something unheard of for a jazz/blues player. Steve said that some times his fingers would bleed. Thats really amazing.

Everything you're pointing out is what makes Stevie the GOAT of GOATS even among...no, ESP among musicians. You did a fantastic job of nailing it. I hear 12 gauges are very difficult to play and esp at the duration he does. I suppose you already know he used to superglue his guitar string ravaged fingertips closed and keep on playing. Beast.

Hearing him live was a transcendent experience. You did not have to be a guitar player to know that his playing was exceptional. I was blessed to hear him play live many times.

I had to say Fil that SRV had a fantastic presence with his guitar - as if the guitar were a completely natural part of his body. Amazing. He was a real song- and guitar hero. God bless his soul.

Dallas is proud of Stevie. I saw Stevie in 1985 on Greenville Ave. Stevie will forever be in our hearts. I'm a Dallas boy too at 63.

The thing that always gets me is just the massive chorus of sounds that he is able to produce simultaneously. There's open ringing chords and soloing all going on at once. Hard to believe that this is just a power trio, with no additional musicians.

Well I'm an old bird and I grew up in Dallas ..my cousin live two blocks from Stevie they used to jam out in the garage in the early sixties ... we call Stevie's music"" Texas soul""" and he always had it ...I was blessed to be able to see both of these Legends In live performances .....and Hendricks was amazing ...but I'm sorry Stevie Ray just blew the whole place away always....everytime he picked up his guitar.... S.R.V. has been gone for 30 years now... and Hendricks has been gone almost 50 ...and yet here's you young folks still analyzing our music.... does my heart good to know you can appreciate the beauty, passion and soul of what came before your time

I was supposed to see him April 1989 in NWIN. I got sick and missed the show. A friend of mine saw him at Alpine Valley, and the next day of classes was hell for us when we heard the news. Gone too soon, never forgotten.
